However it should also remain sufficiently in it's genre so as to attract those readers who prefer that genre. The imagery can be literal, or as is becoming more popular, an interpretation of something significant in the book that will resonate with the reader. Finding that balance is often tricky. Here are some Romance novel covers that tell the story quite differently from one another and appeal specifically to their intended demographic.
