25.01.2022 Here we have a rare photo of the proscenium arch from 1921 before it was demolished in 1972 This classic architectural feature created a 'picture frame' for the audience to view the stage. Thus popularizing the term 'fourth wall' through which the actors performed. And of course the box seats ensured important guests could be easily seen when attending the theatre. ... #theatre #melbournetheatre #architecture #historical #stkilda #iconic #heritage

12.01.2022 We Need Your Support The National Theatre has been an iconic part of Melbourne's creative landscape for over 80 years. We are a not-for-profit organisation that does not receive any government funding. We rely on generous donations to continue our work for the community. ... All donations over $2 are tax deductible! CLICK BELOW to contribute: https://form.jotform.co/91388025569871 The National Theatre proudly supports Melbourne's communities by providing an affordable venue for a vast range of cultural and artistic events. From live music to classical ballet, school showcases to international comedians. The National Theatre has always been a hub of diverse and accessible performances. We are also home to National Theatre Drama School and National Theatre Ballet School, training professional artists for the industry for almost a century. 2020 has proven an extremely challenging year for the Arts Industry. The majority of events scheduled for this year have been forced to cancel, and our building has gone dark until restrictions are lifted. But we have been working tirelessly to keep our staff, teachers and students working, and to give our clients options in the future. Please consider supporting us in any way you can. You can choose to donate to the schools and support education and training or to maintaining the heritage building and supporting the facilities needed to maintain this historic icon. Every little bit makes a huge difference! We thank you The National Theatre Melbourne
