Allan has a deep connection with Wolston Farmhouse, with his Great Grandfather, William Pettigrew, being responsible for surveying the site of the property. Allan shared his stories with our Volunteers and also brought William’s original ‘level’ - a form of theodolite in a hardwood timber box with the original brass catc...hes. The volunteers were absolutely enthralled by Allan and the stories of William that provided great insight of the time. Thank you Allan and our incredible Volunteers!

04.01.2022 James Cook Museum connects us to historical events through its extensive range of artefacts on display One of them is the May-Belle, a vital piece of transport that served as a ferry for passengers and much-needed supplies during flooding along the Palmer River from Maytown to other settlements during the Palmer River gold rush. Built around 1895 and made out of iron, this vessel is highlighted to be fairly unique as more commonly flood boats of this time would be made of w...ood. This was much more suited for the environment it was used in, as wood would shrink during the dry months when not in use, which would leave gaps in the hull. The May-Belle was washed away around 1911 and as such was left behind when Maytown was abandoned by 1945, and was later re-discovered, upturned in a dry river bed and grown over by flora, in 1973. The old vessel was reported and soon retrieved, restored, repainted, and put on display at the James Cook Museum. The May-Belle is on the heritage register as a historic vessel with the Australian National Maritime Museum, which you can read about in more detail here >> http://arhv.anmm.gov.au/objects/183718 James Cook Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30am to 3:30pm. 03.01.2022 Those of you who’ve visited the James Cook Museum in recent weeks may have noticed that the May-Belle is back on display! Built around 1895, the May-Belle serv...ed as a ferry and vital transport for passengers and much-needed supplies during flooding along the Palmer River from Maytown to other settlements during the Palmer River gold rush. It is noted to be a fairly unique kind of vessel, as more commonly flood boats of this time would be made of wood, whereas the May-Belle is made of iron. This was much more suited for the environment it was used in, as wood would shrink during the dry months when not in use, which would leave gaps in the hull. Another example of this kind of construction being used is the Coen Flood Boat, which is on display at the Cape York Heritage House. After restructuring and rearranging of displays in the museum it was kept in storage out of public display for some time, and with the recent re-opening of the museum, is now on display once more in the entry area of the museum. The May-Belle is on the heritage register as a historic vessel with the Australian National Maritime Museum, which you can read about in more detail here: http://arhv.anmm.gov.au/objects/183718

01.01.2022 Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary have successfully bred the highly endangered Kroombit Tinkerfrog in captivity for the first time! Since 2018, staff at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary have been working in collaboration with Queensland Park and Wildlife Service on breeding the critically endangered Kroombit Tinkerfrog in captivity. In early 2020, Kroombit Tinkerfrogs housed at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary's Amphibian Conservation and Research Facility bred successfully in captivity f...or the first time. In the past few weeks, we have witnessed the first of the tadpoles from this breeding event transform into a tiny froglet, making history for the species. The Kroombit Tinkerfrog is a highly endangered species restricted to a handful of narrow rainforest gullies within Kroombit Tops National Park, 80 km south-west of Gladstone. Despite many years searching, the spawn and tadpoles of this highly cryptic species have never been found. The successful breeding of animals at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has therefore allowed us to observe eggs and tadpoles of the Kroombit Tinkerfrog for the first time Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services intend to continue breeding and raising Kroombit Tinkerfrogs for release to the wild, where numbers of this species are now critically low. Captive breeding of Kroombit Tinkerfrogs is one of a number of actions being undertaken to help save this unique and ancient species from extinction.
