24.01.2022 The precious shrub layer showing how valuable the mid storey is for bird nesting habitat. Seen during a recent Site Inspection in a Red Stringybark ( Eucalyptus macrorhyncha ) Forest with a significant grazing history. Even though Native Blackthorn ( Bursaria spinosa ) exists on the property it is of low abundance. In this case the nesting bird has had to make do with an exotic woody weed, Firethorn (Pyracantha). We endeavour in our Vegetation Planning work to raise awareness of native understorey plants and the urgent need to conserve and increase them on rural properties. #wholepropertytreeplan #ruralrevegetation#sustainabiltyeducator #treeplanforyourfarm

08.01.2022 For a star performer windbreak species on medium to high quality sites you can't go past sheoaks, Casuarina cunninghamiana. Much favoured as a horticultural windbreak since they fix nitrogen and are not highly crop competitive. Their fine needle like foliage is highly effective at reducing wind speed. #nativebiotaruralecology #windbreakdesigner #ruralextension
06.01.2022 Some fabulous footage of breeding kingfishers.
03.01.2022 We are participating in this year's Aussie Backyard Bird Count in Native Biotas home garden in Clifton Grove, near Orange. Are you counting too ? Just 20 mins per day helps gain valuable information about our Aussie Backyard Birds. Be a part of citizen science as well as come to appreciate the importance of backyard native bird habitat as 'stepping stone' habitat. I for one have a new found appreciation for shaded bird baths as being highly frequented in our native bush garden. Visit aussiebirdcount.org.au #aussiebackyardbirdcount #nativebiotaruralecology
