21.01.2022 Low Tox Tuesday - menstrual cups (chaps, you might want to keep scrolling today!) When I’ve spoken to girlfriends about these the results have been both ends of... the spectrum - from never knew they existed to yes! Love them. They had been on my to do list and then when the supermarket shelves were empty at the start of iso it was my only option! So what are they? A reusable silicone cup that you insert into the vagina and change every 10-12 hours. No landfill, no toxic ingredients (apparently 85% of tampons have shown traces of glyphosate!) and more economical as it will last for 2 years. Here’s a great video from ABC Life on what they are and frequently asked questions: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YYPjLwS8kds Who’s game to give them a try?

10.01.2022 Low Tox Tuesday - search engine Did you know that you can plant trees whilst searching the internet? Next time you’re investigating something, instead of using ...Google, try Ecosia instead. Ecosia was established in 2009 and is a search engine with a social conscious. The advertising revenue that they earn from you clicking on ads goes to planting trees. Approximately one tree is planted per 45 clicks. Give it a try!

08.01.2022 Low Tox Tuesday - cleaning the limescale from the kettle Not a very exciting topic but this is so easy. Put half a lemon in the kettle and boil, repeat if req...uired. This will still work if you've already squeezed the juice from the lemon but you may need to boil the kettle 3 or 4 times. Don't forget to rinse the kettle unless you like lemon in your tea!

04.01.2022 Low Tox Tuesday - toothbrushes Apparently we should replace our toothbrushes every 3 months. To make remembering easier, I change ours with the seasons. What d...o we do with the old one? Australia has a population of 25m. If everyone is replacing their toothbrushes after 3 months, that equates to a staggering 100 million toothbrushes going to landfill every year! Toothbrushes aren't recyclable via household recycling facilities but you can recycle them through TerraCycle - either send it directly to them or some dentists are collection points. (They also accept toothpaste tubes, dental floss containers and electric toothbrush heads). Did you know that eco-friendly toothbrushes can be found in the supermarket?? Woolworths had one but it was in plastic packaging so I vetoed that one immediately. Coles had two to choose from Grants $4 and Jordan $5. GREENWASH ALERT!!! The Jordan one with its award winning Scandinavian design, recycled cardboard packaging and "green clean" advertising is actually just made of recycled plastic (not bamboo as I had assumed). So back to the Grants toothbrush. The handle can be composted but the bristles are made from nylon so you can either pull the bristles out or snap the head off when it comes to disposing of it. Grants also make a kid-sized toothbrush but you'll have to buy it at the health food store or online. I still love my electric toothbrush but I now have a bamboo travelling option and a recycling solution for the electric heads. Have you tried a bamboo toothbrush? Let me know what you think xoxox

03.01.2022 Low Tox Tuesday - vapour rub Did you know that the main ingredient in traditional vapour rub/chest rub products is petroleum jelly. Did you know that petroleu...m jelly is a by-product of the oil refining process? Other than the environmental impact of fossil fuels, these petrochemicals have links to hormone disruption and are sometimes contaminated with carcinogens 1,4-dioxane and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. What are our alternatives? There are heaps of options using a base of Shea butter, beeswax, jojoba or coconut oil! I use a combination of Badger Balm aromatic chest rub and a Young Living essential oil roll-on called Breathe Again. I’ve heard good reports of Simple As That Vapour Rub but I haven’t tried it, also Little Innoscents make a Winter Blues Balm formulated especially for babies. Let me know what other options you like xoxo

03.01.2022 Low Tox Tuesday - Deep Heat (muscle pain cream) I had a big fall off a horse when I was 14 and have had a dodgy neck ever since. Deep Heat is a product that wo...uld be in most Australian households and appears to be available globally. Is it low tox? I can’t find a full ingredients list anywhere online which generally gives it a from me. What I can see is the active ingredients: Methyl salicylate - oil of wintergreen (can be naturally or synthetically derived) Menthol - oil from mint/peppermint etc (can be natural or synthetic) Chloroxylenol - preservative. Listed as a skin/eye/mouth irritant, bioaccumulative in wildlife, suspected liver toxicity Fisiocrem is another product based on arnica, St. John’s wort and calendula. The packaging states that it doesn’t contain parabens or hydroxybenzoates but doesn’t disclose the other ingredients What can we use instead that we KNOW doesn’t contain harmful ingredients? These are a couple of my tried and tested favourites: Weleda Arnica Cream - available online, in David Jones, lots of health food stores. Brilliant for sore muscles and bruises. Also comes in a massage oil but that’s not so handy for your handbag. Magnesium oil - magnesium is a muscle relaxant and is easily absorbed through the skin. I like the Amazing Oils Magnesium Spray - available online and in health food stores. I’ve heard it’s fantastic if you have restless leg syndrome.

02.01.2022 Low Tox Tuesday - lip balm The cold weather has arrived, the heating is on and I'm finding myself reaching for the lip balm more often. So what ingredients DON'...T we want in our lip balm? Artificial fragrances/phthalates - hormone disruptors Artificial sweetners. I found saccharin in one - possible human carcinogen and suspected reproductive and developmental toxicity, no thanks! Palm oil - environmental impact Petroleum based ingredients - e.g. paraffin, petroleum jelly, parabens. All derived from crude oil, suitable for cars, not human bodies. Please check the ingredients list of your current products. Even some balms marketed as "natural" are full of petroleum (time to find an alternative to the Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment). There are loads of low tox options that are easy to find in some chemists and health food shops. Some of my favourites are: Moo Goo, Hurraw, Dr Bronners, Weleda, PURE Papaya Care. If you've found a low tox option that you love then please add it in the comments
