15.01.2022 Vitamin D is a bit of an all-rounder. It promotes healthy bones, has anti-cancer properties and has even been shown to boost our immunity. But did you know it is also linked to fertility? Vitamin D raises levels of progesterone and oestrogen in women, which helps regulate the menstrual cycle and ovulation. It boosts levels of testosterone in men, and helps healthy sperm to form ("Vitamin D and fertility-a systematic review" http://www.eje-online.org/conte/early/2012//24/E...JE-11-0984) To get enough vitamin D without skin damage: in Summer a few minutes of unprotected sun exposure of the face, arms and hands before 10am or after 3pm, most days of the week. In southern parts of Australia in Winter you'll need a total of about 2-3 hours of exposure spread over a week. http://www.cancer.org.au/cancersmartlifestyle//VitaminD.htm

08.01.2022 One survey found that when a couple decides the time is right to get pregnant, women tend to put a lot of unnecessary pressure on themselves, even if there are no suggestions of fertility problems. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/242705.php It isn't hard to imagine that stress levels only worsen if the couple experiences difficulties conceiving. The Billings Ovulation Method is very successful in assisting couples who had thought they were infertile achieve a pregnancy naturally. 03.01.2022 Women who work irregular shift patterns are almost twice as likely to suffer fertility problems, research has found. According to a report by Laura Donnelly, Health Correspondent of The Telegraph (UK), researchers have analysed all studies since 1969 on this topic, which included data from 119,345 women. They found that those with a mixture of day, night and evening shifts were 80% more likely to suffer from subfertility inability to conceive in 12 months of trying.... Women working irregular hours also had a 33% higher rate of menstrual disruption (erratic cycles) and those who worked only night shifts had a 29% higher rate of miscarriage. However the study did not establish why irregular shifts were associated with fertility problems. The study was presented by a team from the University of Southampton at the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in London. In an audit of all clinics in Australia teaching the Billings Ovulation Method to assist women who came wanting to get pregnant, there was a 65% success rate with couples classified as subfertile by the definition of this study. Any woman having difficulty getting pregnancy should first make sure she understands how to recognise the natural signs of fertility so that she is having sex at the right time not necessarily day 14! For more information have a look at the ebook at http://www.thebillingsovulationmethod.org//achievingpregn/ , or call the O&G Centre on 6925 3455 to make an appointment.
