23.01.2022 BREASTFEEDING. One of the most unexpectedly challenging, stressful, exhausting and heartbreaking experiences of my life. For me it was a supply issue, despite trying everything. Herbs, supplements, nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathy, meditation, yoga, multiple lactation consultants, pumping round the clock - nothing seemed to helped. 5 weeks ago, when she was 15 weeks old, I breastfed my baby girl for the last time. Whilst it came with a huge amount of relief, the guilt alway...s finds a way of creeping back in. - I wish I had been able to exclusively breastfeed - I wish I had kept trying - I wish I hadn’t put myself under so much pressure - I wish I didn’t cry so much for so long - I wish I could blame it on something other than myself - I wish I hadn’t agonised about how I thought I was failing my child from the very start - I wish I knew what a letdown felt like - I wish I knew what full breasts felt like - I wish I could have have been able to feed just by hearing my baby cry - I wish I had been more educated about breastfeeding before I had my baby because it’s harder than I could have ever imagined! Despite all this I am honestly so incredibly grateful to have a happy, healthy, formula fed baby. In the end that is all that should really matter but it doesn’t make me forget everything we have been through. To every woman and man that has shown me so much support, I thank you. To every woman who is experiencing or has experienced similar issues, I’m with you. 21.01.2022 ONE . What a lot you have seen in your little life so far. Not long after you entered the world our county literally caught on fire and if that wasn’t devastating enough the world then shut down as we know it meaning that some of closest family haven’t even met you yet . It has been the fastest, most amazing, exhausting, joyful, challenging, proud, confusing, non-eventful yet somehow eventful year of our lives - for which we are ultimately very grateful. 16.01.2022 *NUT BUTTER CUPS | I had every intention of homemaking all my Easter treats this year now that I have so much spare time on my hands but these *Nut Butter Cups were the only ones that eventuated! It was my first time making homemade chocolate which was really easy and much more delicious than I expected! If anyone fancies making some of their own here in the recipe which is a classic combined bastardisation of a number of different recipes I found online. For the chocolate,... combine: - 1 cup cacao butter (melted) - 1 cup cacao powder - 50ml maple syrup (or to your desired sweetness) For the filling, whip with electric beaters: - 1/3 cup nut butter of your choice (I used homemade ABC butter here) - 2 tsps butter - 1 tbsp maple syrup Divide half the melted chocolate into 8 silicone cups. Freeze Divide all the nut mix on top of the frozen chocolate. Freeze Pour the remaining chocolate on top of the nut butter layer and sprinkle with sea salt. 10.01.2022 I’ve noticed a lot of fear and confusion amongst people recently in regards to eating meat and other animal products after the release of Game Changers - which in my opinion is just another totally one sided documentary trying to shove fear into people for the benefit of a single industry. Don’t get me wrong - over consumption of poor quality processed meats and saturated fats will undoubtedly have a negative effect on anybody’s health! We all know that! But regular consumpti...on of good quality, free range, pasture-fed meat and poultry can be part of a very healthy, balanced diet. So to all of you who are feeling concerned over this conflicting information, I say enjoy your animal products this festive season but choose them wisely! 08.01.2022 SARDINES. Like them or loath them - these guys are a nutritional powerhouse! . I ate them about 3 times a week during my pregnancy (plus additional fish oil supplementation) to make sure my omega 3 level were more than optimum for the healthy growth and development of my baby. Sardines are one of the richest sources of omega 3 fatty acids on the planet! . Pregnant or not, a good quality tin of sardines will also deliver a very healthy dose of protein, vitamin D, vitamin B12, ...calcium and selenium. . If you’re not a fan of tinned sardines, I would do anything to try and convince you otherwise - so here is my best shot! The larger the sardines, the less fishy they taste - so buy the best quality you can find. I buy Spanish sardines in EVOO by Sole Mare available at Coles. Sardines and slices of fresh tomato are the best of friends - I always have them together. (If you also hate tomato them you’ve lost me - kidding - try lemon or chilli instead!) Put it all on your favourite slice of toast. Here I’ve used my personal favourite @noniesfood Top with plenty of sea salt flakes, freshly ground pepper and a drizzle of olive oil. Voila! 07.01.2022 The part of this new reality we’re living in that I struggle with the most is not knowing when I’m going to see my family again. We have no family in NSW, they are all in QLD or overseas and there’s no telling when we might be together again. I was meant to be with my parents and Freya on the Sunshine Coast right now. Just as I’m sure so many of you had plans to go away or see family & friends with Easter approaching. Don’t get me wrong, more than anything I am so grateful th...at everyone is safe and well and for the wonder that is FaceTime, but it just isn’t the same. Jumping on a plane to be with my family is something that I have always just taken for granted - I hope I never will again. Right now I feel like the next chance I get to hold them in my arms (or anyone that doesn’t live under my roof for that matter), I will never want to let go. 02.01.2022 What a bizarre time we are living in right now. As someone who loves to plan ahead and organise my life the uncertainly is killing me! What do I do next? How can I prepare? How bad will it really get? How can I avoid the panic? And how can I look after myself and my family whilst still being considerate of those around me? Particularly those who are more needy. Sitting in a moment of peace this morning I found myself asking even more questions like - Will there be enough food... on the shelves tomorrow? Will I have enough to feed my family? Will my husband still have a job tomorrow? When will I be able to see my interstate and overseas family again? And then it dawned on me - these are questions that some people will be asking themselves every single day of every single year, global pandemic or not. It made me realise just how much we take our access to food, income and family for granted. For so many the thought of no food on the shelves or on the table, or no income is just an ordinary day. So let’s try not panic. 01.01.2022 Lunch during the week can be such a bore! Especially when we’re mostly making it ourselves these days! Whether you’re working from home or looking after little ones you’re probably after something QUICK and HEALTHY and SATISFYING. But how often do those three words end up in the same sentence? Not very often! Particularly when we’re time poor. And let’s be honest, who isn’t!
