17.01.2022 Meet Monty a Chilean needle grass-detection-dog in training along with his owner and ACT Parks ranger, Mark Elford. The black Labrador is learning to sniff... out juvenile Chilean needle grass before it seeds in Namadgi National Park, as part of a concerted effort to control the pest. If Monty passes all his training and he is showing promising signs of doing so he will be the first dog to detect the weed in Australia. Steve Taylor, who heads ACT Parks’ invasive plants program, says the weed can be highly damaging to native grassland habitats and is very hard to find in the valleys of Namadgi. He says dogs are successfully being used to detect Chilean needle grass in New Zealand, and the similar serrated tussock grass in Tasmania. If the breeze is blowing towards them, they can pick up the scent of a very small plant in a big area. They can pick up a plant that has just germinated under a tussock grass that we wouldn’t be able to see. It’s amazing what dogs can do. ACT Parks and Conservation Service
