21.01.2022 Today was delightful, Zooming farmer Jacinta on her regenerative farm in Loch, Victoria, in my new role as the South-Eastern Farms2Schools officer at the PPWCMA. Over 350 children aged 5-10, from 3 different schools, virtually experienced a tour with farmer Jacinta, who shared her mixed enterprise of beef, sheep, pigs, poultry, orchard, vegetables and bees. In celebration of ‘Wild Pollinator Week’, children were also asked to help ‘Lucy and Larry ladybird’ contemplate if li...ving at chemical free ‘Greedy Guts farm’ (where there are lots of native plantings for wildlife, edible aphids on the roses and leaf litter to hide in) was a good decision. Such fun helping to nourish the development of children’s creative imagination and problem solving through role play, by using real-life opportunities for them to observe, explore, inquire and think laterally. Wonderful to be part of Monash’s Conceptual PlayWorlds recent PD and early years research with the Farms2Schools team @portphillipwesternportcma and @marinemammalfoundation The Farms2Schools project is delivered by the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority in partnership with AUSVEG VIC and is supported by the State Government through the Working for Victoria initiative. 21.01.2022 NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. (Was so proud to be involved with Aboriginal students and their friends from MESC, painting their Totems after guidance from local Elders in 2015) @naidoc.org.au

13.01.2022 Almost time to harvest delicious ‘beach bees honey’. Did you know... All worker bees are female. A bee produces a teaspoon of honey (about 5 grams) in her lifetime. To produce a kilogram of honey, bees fly the equivalent of three times around the world in air miles. Cheap at $18 per kg!! The types of flowers bees take their nectar from determines the honey's flavour.

12.01.2022 What a great day to pack a picnic and go on an adventure with your little ones! Trust your journey, even when you cannot see the destination.

09.01.2022 Who saw the heavens line up last night during the total lunar eclipse? When the Moon moved through the deepest part of the Earth's shadow (known as the umbra), it took on a distinctive red glow this effect was caused by the bending of light in Earth's atmosphere. If you missed it, luckily, you only need to wait until November 8, 2022 to see the next total lunar eclipse.

08.01.2022 Did you know the annual run of Snapper in Port Phillip Bay coincides with the blossoming of the local coastal Tea-Tree? These natural seasonal markers have been used by our Indigenous Australians for over 60,000 years.

05.01.2022 Families in Victoria, Australia... hoping you are finding lots of special spaces and places to play outside with your family for 2 hours during lockdown. Did you know, time spent on a swing is great exercise for children! Swinging: ... Increases spatial awareness. Develops gross motor skills by pumping legs, running and jumping. Enhances fine motor skills too such as grip strength, hand, arm and finger coordination. Strengthens a child's core muscles and helps with the development of balance. Neutralises the disruptions that are caused by their vestibular system, which can often originate in the inner ear. The smooth, back-and-forth motion can be soothing and calming to a child, almost meditative Wonder where is your special swing? Maybe during lockdown you could build one in your backyard.
