22.01.2022 With a ph of about 2, and being black and boiling hot, it's hardly the most inviting liquid you'll ever see. But it's pretty damn amazing. Heated by the earth below, the liquid is a combination of a unique array of chemicals, in particular sulphides. The boiling liquid flies through the air, and you can see the steam follow each droplet and trail. Together with the strong smell of sulphur, the scene is a reminder of the fundamental power of geothermal processes on this planet.... To protect themselves from predators, they create tunnels like seen here, where ever they go. 17.01.2022 @s4m.i.4m and I reached the top, winds howling amidst a whiteout of cloud and light rain. Somewhere in the haze was the supposedly amazing Red Crater, though we didn't even catch a glimpse-we couldn't see more than about 30m ahead. And then as we started on the slope down into the crater, the white swirl of clouds parted and the Emerald Lakes were revealed below. All around snow laced the crater and peaks, but the lakes steamed, heated by the earth below. Breathtaking, but fl...eeting - within minutes the cloud rolled in once more, as if to say 'move on'. 17.01.2022 Not entirely suited to social media and small screens (the beauty is in the detail, which is hard to make out on devices!)! !.. Anyway, it's literally boiling hot mud. Thick, hot, unadultered mud heated by the earth. Rotorua, New Zealand, is a hot place, the geothermal activity there is like no where else. Pools of mud and liquids are heated from below to temperatures well past boiling. Thick mud buddies and explodes in to the air, they're literally ribbons and sinews of infi...nite shape and variety. The sandstone outcrops to the north of Sydney are great for retaining the day’s heat, and here you find southern leaf-tailed geckoes (Phyllurus platurus). 12.01.2022 ~ZERO~ Time since fire: 2 weeks Fire. A force so powerful, so critical. Devastating, yet renewing. In mid-August 2018, a bushfire ran through part of Bouddi National Park, on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia. What was a Eucalypt woodland/shrubland, was turned to black and white. All the shrubs were gone, the tree canopies scorched, the bare rock exposed. ... This photo was taken about 2 weeks after the fire, as close to time zero as I could get. There’s a few dead leaves, but for the most part it’s just black. The smells are still strong, the winds still blows ash into the air with every puff. The branches leaves at the top of the trees are still hanging on, not having fallen. Those are Angophora trees, their scorched bark has fallen off showing fresh, pink bark. It’s also part of an ongoing series I’m working on, photographing the world inside the burnt area, how it changes, how it grows.
