24.01.2022 Herb of the month for May is Plantago lanceolata, common name: Ribwort or narrow-leaved plantain. Ribwort is a herbal medicine that has been used therapeuti...cally for thousands of years. Originating in Europe, northern and central Asia, it can now be found across the world. Ribwort leaves, which are used medicinally, are lanceolate (spear-shaped) and covered in silky hairs. Rich in mucilage, a decoction of the leaves was used traditionally for dry cough and as a gentle expectorant. The common indication in modern herbal practice is for coughs of all types - Ribwort acts as a relaxing expectorant and for dry or sensitive mucous membranes. Like many of our favourite medicinals, Ribwort is often classified as a weed it can grow anywhere! It can be found readily across Australia, often along paths and roadsides, in parks and suburban lawns. Do you have this growing in your neighbourhood?
24.01.2022 Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are much more common in women than men due to structural differences in the urinary tract. UTIs are caused by the growth of bact...eria within the urinary tract. Bearberry is a herb with a long history of traditional use for urinary problems. Its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent actions within the urinary tract make it well suited for use in UTIs [1]. Bearberry should be prescribed under the supervision of a suitably qualified healthcare professional. 20.01.2022 Need to relieve a cough? Make a cup of tea using Thyme from your garden or pantry. Just pour boiling water over one teaspoon of the dried leaves or two teaspoon...s of the fresh ones. Next put the lid on the teapot or cover the top of your mug, and leave the tea to brew for around five minutes. Strain into your cup, add some honey and/or lemon to taste, then sip on the tea while it's still warm. Natural health professionals often include Thyme in cough mixtures for its expectorant, antimicrobial and antispasmodic properties, so if your symptoms persist, have a chat with your practitioner. 18.01.2022 When it comes to immune system support, medicinal mushrooms like reishi, maitake and shiitake have a lot to offer. In particular, they are rich in compounds cal...led branched beta-glucans, which stimulate the activity of key immune system cells. If your natural health professional has prescribed these mushrooms for you as a liquid herbal medicine, you might have discovered that they have a very distinctive taste, and they may recommend adding it to miso soup, vegetable broth or a stew or casserole. 17.01.2022 Garlic features in a wide range of cuisines and recipes from around the world, so you may already have some in your kitchen. To maximise the anti-infective prop...erties that it's so well known for, chop up your fresh Garlic cloves a little while before using them, then leave the minced Garlic exposed to the air. This allows time for a compound called alliin to be converted to another called allicin (which is considered one of the most important of Garlic's medicinal compounds), a process that involves an enzyme called alliinase. Alliinase is deactivated by heat, so where possible, cook Garlic only lightly, or consume it raw - for example in salad dressings and dips. The chemical volatility of the active constituents in Garlic is one of the reasons that your natural health professional will often prescribe it to you in an enteric-coated tablet. Enteric-coated tablets pass through the stomach before being broken down, which can help protect the alliinase from being degraded by gastric acid. See more
17.01.2022 A key factor in supporting female hormonal health is ensuring our hormones are in balance. Oestrogen is our main female hormone, and it important that it is met...abolised and excreted effectively. Dietary and lifestyle changes can play an important role in supporting this process. Some key points include: -Weight loss where indicated to reduce excessive oestrogen formation -Reducing or eliminating alcohol to reduce excessive oestrogen formation -Minimising exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals, for example by avoiding plastic food and drink containers, choosing organic foods wherever possible and using natural skin care products -Increasing antioxidant intake, by enjoying brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices and green tea -Increasing cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and kale to support healthy oestrogen detoxification -Increasing sulfur-containing vegetables such as onions and garlic to support healthy oestrogen detoxification -Increasing water and fibre intake to assist elimination of oestrogen through the kidney and bowel A qualified natural healthcare practitioner can provide individualised advice on supporting healthy hormonal balance. 17.01.2022 Echinacea is an immune enhancing herb, the easiest way to check if your echinacea is high quality is a simple taste test, it should tingle your mouth and tongue on taking it (liquid or holding the tablets in your mouth). If it doesn’t tingle then ask a herbal practitioner which brand you should be buying.
15.01.2022 Sturt Desert Pea is the floral emblem of South Australia. This Essence addresses sorrows. I have come across at least three Aboriginal legends connecting this f...lower to grief and sadness. 11.01.2022 Do you have a young adult with social skill issues? I just completed the three day webinar for the PEERS program training and I was very impressed with Dr Elizabeth Laugeson & this program. It is ‘evidence base’ so they know it actually works! Just to give you one little bit of this program; If your teen is being teased what do you tell them to do? (every parent gives the same advice) Ignore them, walk away or tell a teacher. But does it work? No it doesn’t. Dr Laugeson tal...ks about what is the ‘ecological valid’ response, meaning what is ‘done’ by socially accepted teens that actually works against being teased. We can break these steps down and teach teens with social skill issues exactly what to do and how to response. Watch the video to find out the ‘ecological valid’ response to teasing... https://youtu.be/HJwq7gg2Pw0 The book is called ‘The Science of Making Friends’. They are about to release a 30 day online course for young adults, they usually have many face to face courses and boot camps. The Australian site is www.peersaus.com
