25.01.2022 Once again Koeyma Eso (Thank you) Sydney Opera House for Dance Rites, an opportunity to perform after many months of lockdown for Covid. It was a boost for our spirits to sing & dance again. It was an effective marketing avenue to maintain our presence with audiences and the public. In return SOH will always count on us to promote Dance Rites as a vehicle for dance groups from small & remote communities to participate on a national stage. This year 6 groups from our five com...munities in the NPA (Northern Peninsula Area) entered and 3 made the finals! How good is that ! and one of us Won! Let us Congratulate Guba Markai from Bamaga for taking out the top prize. We are proud of the young dancers who put on a fantastic show of precision and wowed the judges. Naygayiw Gigi and Guba Markai are both Saibai Islander dance groups based in Bamaga. We are family. Congratulations also to Injinoo Storm Thathilgaw Minar for making the finals, and a shout out to Wabanan Geth, Injinoo & New Mapoon dancers for participating in Dance Rites. NPA is a stronghold for traditional dance, our 3 Aboriginal and 2 Torres Strait Islander communities are diverse and rich in culture and history. This is evident in our Dance, which encompasses our stories, songs and language. Kapu Woenab Mura. See more

20.01.2022 * A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT* We are growing and moving in a new direction. This year for the first time we will bring to audiences a dance theatrical production "Wakemab". It is a groundbreaking production in this genre of traditional Torres Strait dance. It has been a journey of 4 years to reach this stage. Dance training kicked off last evening, we welcomed an enthusiastic bunch of new dancers into the fold. It's always good to see young people embracing our culture.

17.01.2022 We enjoyed the pleasure to do our first big post-Covid gig for the 2020 Dance Rites Online. We won this competition in 2015 and it was honour to be invited back. "Baw Sik" was the chosen show for this event. It highlights the power of mother nature on our way of life and effects of climate change. Our scenic location is beautiful Seisia Beach. Dance Rites heats are on this week. Click the link below. ... https://www.youtube.com/sydneyoperahouse See more
17.01.2022 It may be end of season, but we are still busy with performance development and corporate activities. Governance Training for directors this month on Thursday Island, AGM on the 25th November, and things are moving along in the development of a new show next year. We also received great news regarding a major international gig. Watch this space for official announcements. 14.01.2022 Thank you Australia Council for the Arts for hosting the First Nations Roundtable for Arts, Creative Independents and Organisations. It was reassuring to connect and share with the panel and artists in this difficult time for us in the Arts & Entertainment industry.

03.01.2022 COVID-19 IMPACT Famz & Fans we are living in strange and unprecedented times. The Northern Peninsula Area is on Lockdown. It is a huge impact on tourism and other industries, businesses and employment up here. Travel is restricted in/out of the community and the country. This has already forced us to cancel one overseas appearance. We are exercising duty of care to our Dance Troupe members health and well-being, as well as heeding the advice of our Government. At this tim...e it has not affected our theatrical production, it's still full steam ahead. Dance training and pre-production activities continue. We will make this lockdown period as productive as possible. Our thoughts go out to artists and all people in the arts industry who are facing financial hardship due to cancellations of events & bookings. We stand in solidarity with you and pray we pull through this as best as we can. See more
