25.01.2022 2020 is off to a great start. Last week our Cert IV and Diploma students dropped in to @ccp_australia to check out the first round of shows for 2020. We were lucky enough to have curator Mad Spencer-Castle walk (and talk) us through each of the exhibitions. Thank you Mad! Such an inspiring start to the year. @ Centre for Contemporary Photography

25.01.2022 We are excited to announce that Persona, a virtual exhibition by Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging students is now live on ncatphotography.vic.edu.au/persona. Since it’s beginning’s photographers have had difficulty capturing reality. There is always something ‘’missing’. The problematic nature of photography is that it is impossible to capture the whole truth. Photographic representation and notions of truth in the digital age is an even more challenging concept; with... Imaging technology as advanced as it is, we often question how real images actually are. And we now question the authenticity of images on social media, particularly of many people who seem to project a persona through photographic images, rather than their true selves. 24.01.2022 Our next contributor for our PHOTO ISO project is Certificate IV student, Brianne who captured details of her face and body using her Smartphone to arrange into fragmented digital photomontage. #photoiso #pic_ncat #ncatphotography #ncateducation #photomontage #digitalphotomontage #blackandwhitephotography

24.01.2022 ‘Restricted Access’, a virtual exhibition and fundraiser by Certificate IV and Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging students is now live on https://www.ncatphotography.vic.edu.au/virtual-exhibiton-ph This year 100% of the proceeds will go to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) from a virtual exhibition and fundraiser. The ASRC is Australia’s largest human rights organisation providing support to people seeking asylum. They are an independent not-for-profit organisat...ion whose programs support and empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical, mental and social well being. With a target of AUD$500.00, we ask that anyone who can make a donation do so via the link in our bio. @zkennaugh_ Zoë Kennaugh Hands, 2020

23.01.2022 Our students recently returned to the NCAT photographic studios to experiment with low-key lighting and coloured gels. 23.01.2022 P H O T O I S O Our students are returning to the college this week, however we will continue to showcase some of the excellent photographs they have been capturing during home isolation. First year student @toorukii has been capturing some striking imagery around her home which demonstrate a sensitivity to light, tone and form and to the surreal qualities of the everyday. We look forward to see these images materialise into gelatin silver prints over the coming weeks when our students can venture back in to our black and white darkrooms. @ Northern College of the Arts & Technology

22.01.2022 We are taking a small break from PHOTO ISO to bring you a slideshow of our current students pre-Covid 19 lockdown. Our students have adapted so well to remote learning, considering how abruptly their study of digital and analogue photography was interrupted. They are all still shooting in home isolation, so are patiently waiting to return to our film processing facilities and wet darkrooms to develop their images. We look forward to getting seeing them again, face-to-face, in the not so distant future.

21.01.2022 Over the coming weeks we will be posting selected works from our students Semester 1 photographic portfolios. This evening we present two striking works created by first year student Zo in response to the theoretical study of vernacular photography and the post-modern strategy of appropriation. Channelling the poetic photographic appropriations of contemporary artist Moira Ricci, Zo has seamlessly inserted herself into images from her family archive.

20.01.2022 In an exploration of the constructed nature of photography, first year students have been producing photographic portraits (and self-portraits) in the style of selected photographers of the Victorian age. Here, Brianne Igoe has taken inspiration from the emotive portraits of British photographer, Lady Clementina Hawarden.

20.01.2022 P H O T O I S O Diploma student Neve Tullberg (@artsylegs ) recently created a number of striking self-portraits in response to a shoot brief for her PHOTO STUDIO class. Students were required to create a series of portraits/self-portraits in the interior of their homes. Available lighting (both natural and artificial) and DIY backdrops were other prerequisites. These works are such a great example of the creative possibilities of the (improvised) home studio. #photoiso #ncatphotography #pic_ncat #selfportraitphotography #photoimaging #homestudiophotography #ncateducation #diyphotographybackdrop

19.01.2022 P H O T O I S O Recently our students have commented that they are exploring new and otherwise overlooked subject matter during this period of home isolation. NCAT Photography Diploma student, Bella Lane, who usually favours working in the photographic studio, has captured these beautiful photographs of the hands of her mother and grandmother. @ Northern College of the Arts & Technology

16.01.2022 As part of their study of post-modernism, semiotics and appropriation our Diploma students hit the colour darkroom earlier this week to create contact sheets, test strips and 10 x 8 prints channeling the image making strategies of American artist, Richard Prince (with particular focus on his works from late 1970s). 15.01.2022 Staff and students are back on campus! Our students have hit the ground, running this week; developing colour and b&w film, scanning, printing, painting with light in the photographic studios, shooting with medium format cameras and printing in the b&w darkroom. Our Diploma students embarked upon their study of Type-C photography yesterday. Their first task was to create a photogram using materials found in and around the photography department. Students were introduced to th...e incredible work of contemporary artist, Danica Chappell for inspiration. Their creation of photo grams in the black & white darkroom in 2019 (along with their study of Man Ray and Lszl Moholy-Nagy) also firmed the basis of their understanding and application. Here is a compilation of their test strips. Stay tuned for a selection of their final prints. #ncatphotography #photogram #studyphotography #typecphotography #ctype #chromogenicprint #photographystudies #ncateducation #analoguephotography #education #photography #colourphotography #darkroomphotography

15.01.2022 In response to a theoretical study of early 20th century photography, our students have been making pictures which explore the aesthetics of selected artists/practitioners who championed a New Vision in the of the photographic medium. Certificate IV student, Charlie Gray ( @clownograph ) looked to American photographer Paul Outerbridge Jr for inspiration in the creation of this dynamic still life, shot on 35mm colour positive film. #35mmphotography #35mmfilmphotography #analogfilm #e6process #hybridphotography #lmisnotdead #colourpositivefilm #slidefilm #slidefilmphotography #photographicmateriality #paulouterbridge #paulouterbridgejr #ncatphotography #ncateducation #studyphotography #photographystudies #melbourneeducation

06.01.2022 P H O T O I S O Our students have been producing some really strong portraits of late. Siblings, partners, children, mothers, fathers and grandparents seem to be captured with greater consideration and sensitivity. This image is part of a series by Diploma student, @amearose of her sister.

06.01.2022 NCAT Photography Diploma students have been back in the darkroom (with the lights on!) exploring the creative possibilities of the Chemigram technique. 04.01.2022 Earlier this week we were fortunate enough to have Melbourne based photographer @laurenbamford drop by via video link to talk to our first and second year students as part of our 2020 guest speaker program. Lauren has been a guest speaker on a number of occasions at the college and she never ceases to make an impression. We were shown snippets of her extensive (and stunning) photographic portfolio which were accompanied by informative (and hilarious) anecdotes, generous piece...s of advice, and candid responses to questions about all aspects of her practice. 01.01.2022 Yes, this famous photograph by American photographer Stephen Shore was taken on the road, something many of us are itching to do, however we thought wed post it here for a bit of inspiration/reference for our students, teachers and followers. Everyday routines, particularly sitting down to eat meals, have taken on a new significance. The Certificate IV students are currently undertaking a practical and theoretical study of Vernacular Photography, so this i...s even more apt. And our Diploma students will be embarking upon an exploration of large format photography in Semester 2, which will mean a further investigation of Shore and others. Enjoy your breakfast everyone!
