25.01.2022 An interesting event by National Council of Jewish Women of Australia

25.01.2022 Soup and Love: last week, just before the Stage 4 Restrictions came into force, our Golden Age Club members, residing in the Office of Housing in Prahran and South Yarra, received a special soup kit. With the help of volunteers, Coordinator Nellie Khoroshina put together a box of ingredients to assist members to keep warm and healthy in winter. Each soup kit included legume tins, fresh vegetables and herbs. The members thanked us and said that this box really helped them. ...They didnt need to go and collect all the ingredients themselves said Nellie and added this way each member could cook the soup to their liking. We take this opportunity and wish you all Happy Tu BeAv. We are #StrongerTogether, now more than ever! #NCJWAVic #PoweringWomen #LoveandSupport #TuBeav #GoldenAgeClubs #COVIDSupport

24.01.2022 The Jam Project recently gathered for another fantastic Jam session. This month, we welcomed Romy Bursztyn - Nutritionist, Health Coach and Body Image Educator. Romy led an inspiring discussion about positive body image, the current pressures from social media and peers, and how as both individuals and a group we can be ambassadors to improve how we feel about ourselves and each other. Thank you to our entire Jam cohort for your contribution and willingness to share. ... Our matches also spent quality time together creating inspiring art pieces using positive affirmations. Romy, we thank you for giving The Jam Project your wisdom, time and dedication to this very important topic. #TheJamProject #GirlsStickingTogether #PositiveBodyImage #Empowerment #Positivity #JewishCommunityMelbourne

23.01.2022 Monash University's Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation (ACJC) is currently undertaking research to evaluate and build on our #MakeSpaceForHer campaign. The Monash team, in partnership with NCJWA Vic, has developed a survey aimed at anyone who in the past or currently works, volunteers, or is on the board at a Jewish community organisation. If you work in an organisation in our community as a board member, volunteer or staff member we invite you to be part of this important research project: https://bit.ly/3nK0c6F #NCJWAVic #PoweringWomen #GenderEquality #MelbourneJewish #GenderNonForProfit #NonForProfit

23.01.2022 NCJWA Vic is disappointed to learn that the only female member of the Mizrachi Executive has not been re-coopted to the Executive. Mizrachi was one of the early signatories to our Gender Equality Pledge (the Pledge), which amongst its founding principles dictates that all members of our community are to be treated with dignity, respect and fairness. We lament the recent loss of the only woman from their Executive, which now comprises solely of men. The Mizrachi Executives’... conduct demonstrates disregard for its commitment to more equitable female participation and to actively pursue a culture of respect for women. We call on Mizrachi and all Jewish communal organisations to increase the participation of women on their boards and take positive steps toward realising goals of more female voices around decision making tables, not less female voices. In a recent letter to the Mizrachi community, the Mizrachi Executive noted that its "gender balance is consistent with its obligations under the Gender Equality Pledge. This position suggests a disregard for the spirit and intent of the Pledge. It is unclear how an Executive, which consists of men only, considers itself aligned with obligations to pursue more equitable female participation. We hope that during future elections and cooption processes, Mizrachi honours its pledge to increase female participation at all decision making levels of the organisation. Through the #makespaceforher campaign, NCJWA Vic is dedicated to ensuring women's voices and skills are elevated. We will continue working with pledge taking organisations, calling for transparency and accountability in honouring the pledge and providing education and resources that ensure all pledge takers adopt best practice in the pursuit of gender equality. Our society, our community and our organisations benefit when the aspirations and voices of women and girls are equally respected, valued and heard. #NCJWAVic #PoweringWomen #GenderEquality

16.01.2022 Over the last few months, we have heard many stories of new mothers who have missed out on sharing their transition into motherhood with their families. We know that our Caring Mums volunteers have helped eased the grief, acting as emotional support in these times of uncertainty. Its hard not to feel down about what were missing out on. My kids are missing playing with their friends; my parents are missing out on cuddling their grandchildren; I am missing seeing my friends..., colleagues, our volunteers, and of course meeting our new mums. Its OK to feel flat and disheartened by the unknown. Its important to acknowledge these feelings. Now more than ever, the Caring Mums role of validating, normalising and bearing witness is so important. We will all move through this time and adapt differently. Be kind to yourself and those around you. Remember the incredible work you are doing! If you are a mum, or know of any mum, who would like to be part of Caring Mums please contact us on [email protected]. 12.01.2022 Caring Mums is currently training 15 new volunteers. We constantly have a waitlist of women wanting to do our training. Being a Caring Mums volunteer, supporting pregnant women and new mums, is incredibly rewarding. The 20-hour training focuses on communication skills and building trusting, nonjudgmental relationships. Last week, Caring Mums was honoured to have representatives from Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia PANDA as part of our training. They spoke about h...ow anxiety and perinatal depression can present itself; where we can direct parents for support; and what support can look like. Did you know? 1 in 5 women experience anxiety or perinatal depression. 1 in 20 men experience depression during their partners pregnancy. 1 in 10 new dads experience depression after their babys birth. Anybody can be affected by anxiety and perinatal depression. There are many ways in which anxiety and depression affects parents. There is support for both mums and non-birth partners. PANDA has a wonderful helpline and website catering for both parents. Centre of Perinatal Excellence COPE has a helpful and informative website for both parents. 08.01.2022 In order to enable gender equality change, we require support at the most senior level of the organisation. There is also a need to review every practice, policy and process that the organisation has through a gendered lens said Lee-anne Chapman (Group Manager, Uniting) at our recent Gender Equality Webinar: Tips, Hurdles and Successes Deep Dive. During the webinar, hosted by CEO Alexandra Silver, Lee-anne reflected on the potential organisational challenges in order to a...chieve gender equality in the workplace. One of those challenges is enabling flexible working arrangements. Even in 2020, there is a constant reaction about roles being part time rather than full time at leadership levels she noted. There is so much more work to be done in the gender equality space said Daniel Sarah Rabin Rabbi Daniel Rabin (South Caulfield Hebrew Congregation) at the webinar and added when we think about gender equality in synagogues or in religious organisations, each congregation has its own set of values. And whatever the approach is - it has to be genuine, with empathy and respect to others. Regardless of which way you are inclined in terms of religious observant, there is no excuse to use it as a mechanism or means to try to discriminate anybody on the basis of gender or orientation. Rabbi Rabin addressed a number of aspects on how to achieve gender equality in the orthodox arena. In my view, every congregation needs to have female representatives with vision and leadership abilities said Rabbi Rabin. He explained that women can and should have a strong presence in congregations (i.e. on boards and events). The role of the Rebbetzin is certainly one of leadership. If you missed the webinar (or you would like to watch it again or share it) the recording of the webinar is now available on our YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k5jRknXGNA&feature=youtu.be #NCJWAVic #PoweringWomen #GenderEquality #JewishCommunityMelbourne #GenderEqualityJewish

07.01.2022 Monash Universitys Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation (ACJC) has chosen NCJWA Vic to partner on a special research project. In a statement released last week, the ACJC revealed with much excitement: We are delighted to announce a major new initiative to facilitate research into gender issues in the Australian Jewish community. An interdisciplinary team of Monash researchers will partner with our organisation on a project exploring issues of gender equity, inclusiv...eness and safety in Jewish communal organisations. This exciting research will support the ongoing implementation of our Advocacy Subcommittees campaign #MakeSpaceForHer, which was launched in July 2019. It is particularly timely in light of a recent investigation by the Australian Jewish News, which revealed startling levels of gender-based discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in Jewish communal organisations [ACJC]. This research project is part of a new ACJC initiative The Kerryn Baker Memorial Endowment for Gender Research, which has been established thanks to a gift from the Pratt Foundation and other benefactors. Fiona Geminder, a Pratt Foundation Family Trustee, said "Supporting the promotion of equal involvement by women is a gender issue, but it matters to the whole Jewish community". NCJWA Vic President, Miriam Bass, said We are honoured that the ACJC chose NCJWA Vic to partner with them for the inaugural Kerryn Baker Memorial Endowment for Gender Research project. This research will provide the evidence base from which to develop and grow our advocacy work, enabling us, more effectively, to increase womens participation in leadership roles within communal organisations and to enhance the visibility of women in the Jewish community." Thank you, ACJC, for choosing to work with NCJWA Vic on this important issue. #NCJWAVic #PoweringWomen #GenderEquality #ACJC

06.01.2022 The NCJWA Victoria community breathes a sigh of relief at the news of Malka Leifer’s return to Australia to face 74 charges of alleged sexual abuse. Leifer’s departure, mere hours prior to the closure of Israel’s airport due to COVID-19, further highlights the importance of ensuring her trial is held without delay. We are confident that the Victorian legal system will ensure a just and fair trial. As we have done throughout their years-long fight for justice, NCJWA Vic stan...ds together with Dassi Erlich, Nicole Meyer, Elly Sapper and all alleged victims in this tragic and drawn-out saga. 02.01.2022 We know it is not easy for fathers to become parents during COVID lock-down. I am trying to work from home like everyone else, and I am trying to support my wife and be an involved father of a 2-year-old and a 3-month-old. I know that I am doing well, and I know it is hard for everyone. But it is the constant uphill battle that I feel alone in, that I am fighting every day.said Mark in a recent interview to our Caring Mums Newsletter. Many can relate to Marks situation... he is functioning, meeting the immediate needs of his family, constantly in earshot (if not in sight) of his young family; he feels the solidarity with all those that are going through similar circumstances, yet like others, he feels uniquely alone and isolated. Mark believes that there ismore pressure on fathers right nowas there are few outside supports washing, cooking, cleaning, shopping, looking after his toddler, and working from home often feels overwhelming. There are few precedents for what is happening now.I know it will pass and that we will be OK." Currently, the additional uncertainties of bringing a baby into this world are huge. Mark and his wife are extremely protective, so no one apart from them have ever held their baby. He understands that he cant use the experience of his first child as his barometer as that child was born in normal times. These are not normal times. Books, previous experiences, his own or those of his friends, are from a pre-COVID time They cannot be the blueprints or guides for us now. When asked if there have been any positives from this lock-down, Mark repliedAcceptance. I always knew theoretically that I cant do it all, but now I know it experientially. I am working onchanging expectationsof myself and letting go of the things that I believed I needed to do in order to be me. I am learning to accept that it is OK. The values of having a healthy, happy family over-rides everything. I may need to change the means, but achieving this same end must remain my goal. We wish Mark and all the other fathers out there - Happy Fathers Day! #fathersday #ncjwavic #poweringwomen #covidsupport #emotionalsupport #caringmums

01.01.2022 Hannah, one of our Jam Project 2020 buddies, recently reflected on her #StrongerTogether Jam experience: I have formed a strong relationship with my match during isolation and it has proven to be not only successful, but an incredibly unique and special experience. My match and I have maintained weekly communication since isolation began back in March, and have made an effort to make our chats exciting, fun, and meaningful. We have shared in each others hobbies of painting... and baking together all over video and this has been an amazing tool to bring us closer together. Our FaceTimes are something both her and I look forward to every week and having this positive and supportive partnership is exactly what we need in this time of uncertainty. Being a buddy and having a buddy is crucial in 2020. Make this year count! #TheJamProject #NCJWAVic #PoweringWomen #GirlsSupport #Buddy #Jam2020 #GirlsStickingTogether #WomenSupportWomen @jamprojectvic
