25.01.2022 Q: What would you consider the first thing to check prior to starting your truck? A: Hopefully the registration, matching the VIN number on that vehicles compliance plate. Now you know that (a) your vehicle is actually registered and not just that number plate and (b) you have at least 3rd party insurance. Right or wrong?

25.01.2022 Mobile-phone cameras switched on in NSW But there's a question mark over privacy issues for people like truck drivers In what should be welcome news for all motorists, new ultra-high-resolution cameras designed to catch drivers using mobile phones and other electronic devices while driving have been switched on in New South Wales. After a six-month trial in and around Sydney, new legislation has been passed in NSW allowing for the use of world-leading camera technology to cat...ch drivers illegally using their phone. NSW leads the charge "NSW is the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce legislation like the Road Safety Bill, showing this government's ongoing commitment to road safety as technology and societal trends change," NSW roads minister, Melinda Pavey stated. Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria are expected to enact similar laws enabling the technology. Authorities say the move will help curb road casualties and fatalities claimed to be caused by the prolific use of mobile phones by drivers. The new camera technology employed by Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) works in all weather conditions, day and night, and up to speeds of 300km/h. Given the six-month trial has given the green light to new laws in NSW, it stands to reason that privacy concerns around the use of the cameras have been quashed. This flies in the face of a range of privacy related legislation including the Workplace Surveillance Act 2005 (NSW). Under the NSW state act, certain intimate surveillance, such as surveillance in the workplace, is prohibited. As couriers and truck drivers are in their workplace, some quarters argue the camera may infringe these rights. How do the mobile phone cameras work? The new mobile phone speed cameras in NSW take high-resolution photos of all motorists who pass by, which are then sorted via artificial intelligence designed to recognise phone use. Those photos are then verified by authorised personnel and penalties are meted out. "Controls are in place to ensure images captured by the system are securely stored and managed by authorised personnel only, in a similar way to other camera programs," says Transport for NSW. Drivers in NSW caught touching their mobile phone, even for a second, will get five demerit points and a $337 fine. In Victoria the fine for mobile phone interaction while driving is $484, while in South Australia it is $534. Queenslanders currently face penalties of $400 for tampering with their phone while driving but the north eastern state is planning on upping the fine $1000. Drivers convicted of mobile phone use twice would lose their licence under new measures.

22.01.2022 If you see it wet around the centre, then that may be indicating the lubricant surrounding the bearing is low and if not still leaking, then obviously that would indicate the bearings could be running dry - this you do not want, as it may also be a sign of leaking back into the hub, also lubricating the inner drum meaning no brakes if the drum is lubricated, right? For more info give us a buzz at needatrucklicence.com.au

10.01.2022 Q: Why you should always raise your legs, before hooking up? A: To prevent bending the landing gear whilst sliding the truck turntable, under the trailer to its locking pin. More Information-... If the locking pin is not aligned correctly to the centre of the turntable, then the trailer will be guided to move side to side, this is why its recommended legs are lifted at least 1/2 inch of the ground once your turntable is under the front of the trailer taking its weight, preventing stress and damages to the landing gear. This is a reason why you should and MUST inspect all the landing gear parts, to ensure there has not been any damage or stress to welding points etc. We also recommend that you wind the legs up and down a couple of rounds to once again, ensure the gears within the landing gear are completely operational. Remember the legs will come down easy enough as its with gravity, right? but wind it back up makes sure it does correctly operate - if you hear a sad winding sound or there is lubricant leaking around housing, then bring this to your employer/mechanic attention - simply take a photo and TX it to them to analyse. We hope this assist you, for more information please feel free to contact us on 1300 208 770 (24/7) or visit NeedATruckLicence.com.au
