24.01.2022 NELLEN job network in cash fight A BORDER group committed to better learning outcomes for young people has joined a Victoria-wide push for guaranteed funding. The North East Local Learning and Employment Network (NELLEN) wants the state government to take steps to ensure their programs for the future.... NELLEN chairman Cain McDonald said the 31 networks across the state needed $13 million, annually indexed, so we can continue this vital work. For every $1 invested by the state government an additional $2 is leveraged by (networks) in the community, he said. Councils throughout Victoria recently voted for the Municipal Association of Victoria to call on Premier Denis Napthine to commit sufficient funding. Wodonga Mayor Rod Wangman said the networks provided transition and employment options for young people. No other organisations are as uniquely positioned to undertake this work, he said. NELLEN is an established organisation and long-term achiever in supporting young people in this region. It provides a critical link between the broader community and young people. And that is vital to assisting overall improvements of economic growth for the region and tackling the increasing youth unemployment rate. The North East network has been involved in a range of programs over the years. They include forums aimed at giving students the information they need to better prepare for the workforce. According to the North East group’s website, the networks in general have a core focus on improving participation, engagement, attainment and transition outcomes for young people aged 10 to 19 years. The North East group said yesterday this work was fundamental in ensuring young people in regional and rural Victoria are not left behind. It said this was achieved through helping young people build strong links with educational providers and local employers. Cain McDonald. Picture: JOHN RUSSELL @ Border Morning Mail

24.01.2022 Bright P-12 College VET HOSPITALITY STUDENTS undertake MURRAY RIVER CULINARY CHALLENGE ... On Tuesday 22nd July, eight of our VET Hospitality students were put through a 2-hour culinary competition at the College. During this time, all students were required to complete a 3-course meal in a limited time. At the end of each of the stages, a guest chef from Wodonga judged each student’s dish on a number of criteria including visual presentation, taste and temperature of each dish. Students were also assessed on how they organised themselves, how efficiently they worked and how they maintained their work benches. All students received a certificate of participation for their efforts on the day and commented on the positive aspects of doing the challenge. The two students with the highest score now go through to the sub-regional level to be held at Wodonga on 13th August. Caroline Hodge and Bonnie Wright were the most successful on this occasion and are to be congratulated on their achievement. All students were given invaluable suggestions from chef Matt Wright and a goody bag from the main sponsors, NELLEN. Article from Bright P-12 Newsletter

12.01.2022 YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH DAY! SEEKING ASSISTANCE The third annual Youth Mental Health forum for students in the Albury-Wodonga area will take place on Tuesday 9th September at the Albury Entertainment Centre. There was an article in the local newspaper requesting funding for the event, the link is ... http://www.bordermail.com.au//border-youth-mental-health-/ We are seeking funds for the cost of transport for our Rutherglen High School, Marian College Myrtleford, Tallangatta Secondary College and Beechworth Secondary College students to attend the day, these schools that are attending are travelling approximately 1 hour to get the event. These schools have confirmed that they will be participating in the forum, however the expense of getting to the event is causing concern to the students, teachers and school. The aim of the day will provide young people information about mental health, connecting them to mental health professionals to discuss wellbeing, and to promote the message back to their own schools. The cost of the transport for all the schools concerned is $645.00, this includes the cost of the bus and driver for the day. We would be appreciative if you could please provide the funds to transport these students to the event. Cheques can be made out to NELLEN and posted to P O Box 449, Wodonga Vic 3689 If you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact our office. Thank you in advance

09.01.2022 ALBURY WODONGA YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH DAY AN annual Border youth mental health forum next month is in danger of folding after the organisation responsible for the event loses its federal funding at the end of the year. The forum, which will be held for the third year on September 9 at Albury Entertainment Centre, caters to Albury and Wodonga high school students, giving them a better understanding of depression and related complaints.... Organiser Bronwyn Bruce said funding cuts at the end of the year will see NSW-based not-for-profit organisations, including Murray Industry and Community Education Employment Partnership forced to close. Partner broker Murray Industry and Community Education Employment Partnership, with North East Local Learning and Employment Network formed this committee that plans and runs this event, but with government funding cuts at the end of the year, the partnership will fold and it could potentially see the event stop running, Ms Bruce said. She said the partnership had spearheaded the forum committee since its inception in 2012 and had this year brought Victorian organisations on board to make it a cross-Border event. We have been trying to make partnerships self-sustaining and it’s a good committee, but the reality is if no one takes over the partnership’s role it could fall apart. Ms Bruce said the Victorian organisations would keep their federal government funding, which means the responsibility will fall upon them to keep the mental health forum running. The threat to next year’s event follows a sponsorship deal that has saved next month’s forum. Organisers had been seeking $1600 sponsorship to make the event happen, but had been knocked back by several large companies and institutions on the Border before WAW Credit Union agreed to help. WAW marketing manager Linda Butler said she didn’t hesitate. It was an easy decision. If this doesn’t take place then we are ignoring an issue that is becoming bigger, she said. WAW is very much a community organisation and what may seem like a small sum of money for a company, it will make a huge difference. The forum will host 150 students in the lead-up to mental health month in October and aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. There will be guest speakers, a panel of mental health professionals, police and people who have overcome mental illness. 08.01.2022 Branching out Ninety high school students from across the Border now have a better awareness of the career opportunities agriculture and horticulture provide other than farming. And its thanks to the first Agriculture and Horticulture Careers Awareness Event his week.... The event was hosted by Wodonga Tafe in partnership with North East Local Learning and Employment Network Inc. (NELLEN), Rural Skills Australia, the University. It was supported by local businesses. The schools to attend were Catholic College Wodonga, Wodonga Middle Years, Beechworth Secondary College, Rutherglen High School, Victory Lutheran College, Belvoir Special Development School, Albury High School, St Pauls College, Trinity College and Billabong High School. The year 9-12 students took part in four, one hour sessions on topics such as landscape gardening and design, sport turf management and the green roof concept. There was also a demonstration of large agriculture machinery. Catholic College Wodonga Career education and development leader and Albury-Wodonga Career Advisers Association vice-president Sandie McKoy said the day enabled students to trial several agriculture and horticulture career areas through hands-on workshop. NELLEN project officer Joanna Macklan said the day was a brilliant success. We had identified there was a need for further agriculture education, she said. We approached the Ag-Hort division of Wodonga Tafe to see if they would be interested in being involved and other partners and planning started late last year. Wodonga Tafe Ag-Hort Building Design team leader Graham Hart said it was a great day and achieved what the planners had set out to do. Story by BMM

08.01.2022 Youth employment network welcomes funding promise A BORDER group dedicated to improved learning outcomes and employment opportunities for young people has welcomed a four-year funding promise from the Victorian Labor opposition. The North East Local Learning and Employment Network (NELLEN) is one of 31 networks across Victoria to have received $10 million from the federal government and $2.3 million from the Victorian government for this year.... But from January, funding for the networks will become the sole responsibility of the Victorian government. The Coalition has announced it will increase funding for Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) by $5.7 million next year to $8 million, while Labor has announced an election commitment to provide the LLENs with $8 million each year for the next four years. Opposition education spokesman Steve Herbert yesterday confirmed that if elected in November, a Labor government would provide $32 million over four years. NELLEN chairman Cain McDonald said funding was critical to ensure our job of engaging youth continues beyond this year. This is a great level of funding for us to continue the work we are doing at the moment, he said. The funding announcement is particularly welcome after the latest jobless figures showing the unemployment rate for 15 to 19 year olds is at a 17-year high of 20 per cent. Our work has proven vital in improving outcomes for young people by increasing education and job opportunities for young people, particularly those at risk of disengaging, or who have already disengaged from education and training and are not in meaningful employment. LLENs are made up of a range of groups and organisations including education, training providers, business, industry, community agencies, and parent and family organisations. They had been co-funded by the Victorian and federal governments between 2010 to 2014. Mr Herbert accused the Napthine government of sitting on its hands. We were waiting for the government to do something and they haven’t, he said. One year funding is just an election con job from the government. The government really need to stand by what they are doing, be serious and provide the same commitment that Labor has to four-year funding.
