15.01.2022 Getting Unstuck Tip 2020:1 - What to do when you get lost in the detail. Information is coming at you 24x7. When you get lost in the detail, how do you refocus and get clarity on priorities? Take a few moments out to sketch out an image of what is most important in the sphere you are working in.... In software projects, I find sketching out a high level Use Case diagram always helps. Why? It makes me focus on the users (Actors) and their goals (use cases), which is what the software should be about. I find there are three sources of benefit: 1) Stepping back from the busy work for a few minutes gives me time to get my thoughts in order 2) as visual / creative creatures, the act of drawing (yes, get a pen or pencil in your hand) can be quite therapeutic 3) as mentioned above, if you choose the right type of image for your area of focus, it can help you to refocus on what is most important. All of that will help you to get back into your work with new creativity, energy and focus!
