20.01.2022 Pictured is our own dear member Jann Alcorn, (left), Sally Spain (centre) and a cast member from Gold Coast Little Theatre's production '70 Girls 70'. It was a fabulous production with Jann taking on her role only 12 days out from opening night..! The audience loved it. Jann you are born for the stage. You do us proud.

20.01.2022 4 Corners tonight has investigation into Adani. Should be well worth watching. ABC @ 8.30PM. Let's see where the $1billion of our Tax payers money is heading ....

17.01.2022 It's all about team work!

16.01.2022 URGENT TOMORROW SAVE BLACK SWAN LAKE, BUNDALL GCCC CHAMBERS 12.30 for 1.00pm. Many of you will have watched the saga of Black Swan Lake play out in the media. A 3-year campaign... Wildlife Preservation Society of Qld (GC), a conservative, 53 year-old, science-based, conservation group of integrity have fought hard to keep the lake for future generations. See Save Black Swan Lake facebook page for beautiful photos of the lake we must save.... The previous GCC councillors voted to protect the lake, but the Council elected post March 2016 reversed that decision with only Crs Young, McDonald and La Castra voting to Save Black Swan Lake. It is our LAST CHANCE TOMORROW to stand with those great councillors who listen to the community. Cr Young is taking a stand for those of you who have asked him to speak on your behalf. The swans have a nest with eggs ...but equipment to drain the site is lakeside in preparation for the fill to cover our beloved Black Swan Lake. This is cruel and against the law, according to the RSPCA, and in our view, any right- thinking person. The swans and their nest are in imminent danger. Please .... come to Bundall Council Chambers tomorrow and stand for the animals and birds that live there ..... and, for our democratic right to speak out and to stop our parkland being given to commercial enterprise to administer and restricting ratepayers inherent rights. We, ratepayers, own the lake site. Under the council's licence to the GC Turf Club, it is alleged that we, the ratepayers, have no say and control has been given to the GC Turf Club. We urge all our friends to stand up for our native birds, including swans, magpie geese, grebes, stilts, kites, greater egrets, and frogs, turtles, small native animals and reptiles that call BLACK SWAN LAKE their home. This Tuesday (tomorrow) at 12.30pm in GCCC Chambers, Bundall. (Opposite the Arts Centre). SEE YOU THERE ... for the swans! Call 0428716656 if you want a lift.

15.01.2022 Great folk, great lunch..!

15.01.2022 Well done ABC!! And the LNP want to privatise it! Monday night's ABC 4 Corners Program was a brilliant expose of Adani - the Indian company our governments Federal and State (LNP & Labour) are prepared to fund to the tune of $1b of our taxpayers money. Yes, taxpayers money! The program showed Adani is proven to employ fraudulent practices. The clean job losses in both our agricultural and tourism industries alone will outweigh the 1500 jobs Adani will provide. (T...hat shoots down the jobs provision argument) The farmers around Longreach and Winton have been told their dam levels will be lessened by approx 20cms (8 inches). In this area, water is more precious than gold and drought prevails there This company has already released contaminated water here by over 8 times that allowable under Australian standards and did not notify of the contamination early as it should. Adani's disgraceful and scurrilous polluting of India's environment around their port facilities and other activities is on record. Children's health did not matter, according to the report. Adani deny any wrongdoing. The Great Barrier Reef deserves our utmost care. It is an employer in itself creating thousands and thousands of tourism jobs. It attracts thousands of international and interstate tourists every year. Why are our governments coal centric when renewables are the way of the future and should be functioning at higher levels now. California is now 100% . Where is the leadership at Federal level? Where is the leadership at State level? This two party political system of ours is not working for community good or that of the natural environment and the creatures that live there. Both the Prime Minister and the Premier have been to India to encourage Adani's investment here. But it is on the public record that Adani has no money to prop up the necessary work at its port without the necessary loans from banking institutions ( & most banks have rejected them). Why would our Federal and State governments fete such a company....??? Both parties - all levels... !! And One Nation is on the same band wagon as the two major parties. Do not let them kill off the ABC, Four Corners is giving us fair and balanced reporting. The lifeblood of real democracy. As for the others ...

15.01.2022 Dear friends, On Sunday (March 5 at 2.45 pm), Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland (Gold Coast branch) is holding a "Hands around Black Swan Lake" event. The lake is situated at Gold Market Drive, Bundall and, once again, WPSQ call on you for your kind and treasured support. This event is to show support for Black Swan Lake. Council has resolved to allow the Gold Coast Turf Club to fill in the lake to create a 900 + lot car park to support their events and Magic Milli...ons Race Day horse auction. The lake will be filled in to facilitate this. It is alleged the The Gold Coast Show has had discussions to move to another site further North for their 3 day show. The lake supports well over 40 species of bird, plus frogs, turtles, fish, eels, snakes, lizards, butterflies and small native animals inhabit the surrounding bush land. Some birds species include Magpie Geese, Black swans, superb blue wrens, spoonbills, herons, stilts, and grebes. Some media outlets reported that the lake water is toxic. This is NOT so and water quality has been proven to be to Australian standards and improving by lab-tests of the water. (We are most grateful to Bulimba Catchment Group who gave their time and effort to do this testing and have supported our campaign to Save Black Swan lake, Bundall in the most wonderful way, as have some of your own members.) Tadpoles at all stages of development are present in the water - a good indicator the water is not toxic. Birds are feeding, breeding and raising their young there. People numbers at these events matter. So if you are able to lend your support on Sunday, please.. we urge you to do so. Bring friends and family. Council voted to save the lake in 2016 after a loud and successful community campaign, but the "new" council overturned that decision recently. Our beautiful birds will lose another wetland home. There are too few as it is. And, our community will lose another publicly-owned space, to a commercially based concern. 09.01.2022 If you would like to become a Friend of the Maid of Sker, please contact the NCA. We have a joining form which is open to everyone and the numbers are growing. We hope to have our first social event in the early New Year.

08.01.2022 Our dinner for NCA Vice President Simon and his lovely wife Christine was a fun night. The Yellands have made a great contribution to the NCA and Nerang ... and leave for a working holiday in England and a catch up with old friends and family. The good news is they are coming back! And Simon says he was just getting used to the candy floss machine at Nerang Celebrates Christmas..!!

07.01.2022 The pics below were taken today at the international and multi award winning development, the Eco Village at Currumbin. This place was the brain-child of the late Chris Walton and partner Kerry Shepherd. It is claimed as the world's best ecologically sustainable village and we would not disagree. It was a pleasure to show our Griffith Urban and Planning intern, Sam Burridge, this well thought out development. If only other developers were as like-minded as the brave Chr...is Walton. Brave in many ways, but not least having a go at sustainable development in a time when there were so many obstacles to getting the necessary local government approvals. The picture gallery below shows some of the 60 or so kangaroos that live permanently on the site that has no cats or dogs allowed. as well as innovative building designs. No air conditioners here - no need! See pic of innovative insulation with car tyres and mud, not yet finished. Passive solar design, solar power, recycled and natural building materials, captured rainwater and recycled water, natural landscapes, roads following the natural incline where possible, walking and cycling tracks, native plants and animal habitat preserved, natural watercourses with swales and dams, vegetable and fruit trees in common areas for all to share. There is also a community coffee shop selling good organic food, a pool and gym. Talking to the inhabitants ... they all feel good about where they live, their close community of like-minded people and, that they are leaving a light footprint on our planet! Chris & Kerry's son Fin must feel proud of his family's legacy. We at the NCA do.

07.01.2022 NCA members and old friends join to celebrate another successful year and thank those folk who have made it so successful...!

06.01.2022 Raj making hard work look easy... as he and our great friend and long-time member Dick Baber tackle the Preece House deck repair. Dick's son, Dan, joined the team later in the day. The NCA is blessed to have these guys on board. Our heartfelt thanks guys. Great work today. Our decking timbers are looking good. You are the champions!!

05.01.2022 HELP MAKE HISTORY! Do you know something about the history of Nerang, the first European settlement on the Gold Coast, and the Hinterland, or want to know, and pass it on to tourists and locals? The Nerang Community Association is looking for people to help run a visitor information centre from Ceramic House, the century-old restored heritage home in Bischof Pioneer Park, Nerang St, Nerang. ... Comprehensive training will be given and applicants will be rostered on with others for stints in the Visitor Information Centre and Heritage Photographic Gallery, which will be open seven days a week from 8.30am to 4pm. Join in once a month, once a week, for mornings, afternoons or whenever you like. The Community Association, a non-profit organisation in its twenty-second year, is dedicated to working for residents and visitors to improve the amenity of the area and protect its history, both of the built environment and natural resources such as flora and fauna. Also included in the Nerang Community Heritage Project in Bischof Pioneer Park is Preece House, which once stood in Price Street on the site of the library. The house, built in 1948 by the Preece family as their family home, is in the process of being developed as a photographic museum of the area. Photographs from the late 1800s are already displayed with more in the offing. The building consists of meeting rooms for use by community groups and a fully restored working kitchen, which can be used for catering old style. Also in the park is the Maid of Sker paddle steamer, launched in 1884, that plied the Broadwater and bay between Nerang and Brisbane. This is about to be renovated by the Gold Coast City Council under a scheme to retain icons in the area. Anyone interested in becoming involved as a volunteer in the visitor information centre can contact Nerang Community Association on 0406 627 157. Visit the Visitor Information Centre page on www.visitnerang.com or email on [email protected]

05.01.2022 At a recent Save Our Spit AGM, our own beloved Sparky was honoured for his commitment to the long fight to save this beautiful and much treasured piece of the Gold Coast as a parkland for future generations. Although we do know we must be eternally vigilant in our proprotection of this special place. Well done Sparky and the entire Save Our Spit team. We honour you. You are all champions!

03.01.2022 CLARIFICATION The Nerang Community Association is hosting a Meet the Candidates event at the Nerang Bicentennial Hall on Tuesday night from 6.30pm as a community service. We would just like to advise that other than allowing Independent Australia the right to live stream the event we have no affiliation with them or any other news organisation. The stories and comments in any article written by Independent Australia are not the expressed view of the NCA.... The NCA is an independent, apolitical, broad-based residents’ Community Association and hopes by allowing the opportunity to live stream that all Gold Coasters will have the opportunity to view the candidates. Gold Coast Bulletin journalists, reporting this election, have confirmed their attendance also.

03.01.2022 Wow what a wonderful group of young 4th year Urban and Town Planners giving their practicum presentations at Griffith University yesterday. Our own intern Sam Burridge was amongst them and we were thrilled to hear his most professional presentation. It has been sheer pleasure to host this delightful and sincere young man with such a promising future. Good luck to all the under-graduates and especially to Sam. It has been a pleasure to have you with us.

02.01.2022 Hello members and friends, We are so pleased to report that the Maid of Sker restoration commenced last week and we are told it will be finished at the end of December. This is great news! Our beautiful and much loved paddle-steamer was championed by the Nerang Community Association & others when it was proposed to be scrapped by the Council. A big "thank you" goes out to all those who filled the Nerang Community Hall to capacity in May 2015 when we organised the Town Meeting to Save Our Maid. Well done Nerang community..! This old paddle-steamer is much-loved by every generation of Nerang folk.

02.01.2022 Our Visitor Info Centre Volunteer Narelle ramped up her knowledge of the Scenic Rim's camping sites last week. Together with her hubby, they toured in a camper for 5 days through this beautiful part of south-east Queensland. Now Narelle has first-hand knowledge of caravan and camping grounds to impart to our interstate and overseas visitors ...and share with our Visitor Information Centre volunteers. What a great way to ensure the information you pass on is first-rate. Wonder where Narelle will explore next..!! We shall have to devise a "Where's Narelle" page!

02.01.2022 The executive of the NCA would like to thank everyone who has made this year such a success. The Visitor Info Centre, museum and Preece House Gallery have all flourished this year, and our band of enthusiastic volunteers is growing. The Royal Pines Collection of museum-quality Aboriginal portraiture from the 1860s to the 1940s is a fantastic coup for the Preece House Gallery and John Morris of RACV Resorts is our hero for facilitating this. ...Continue reading
