20.01.2022 Clients often ask us if it’s ok to cuddle their newborn to sleep? And the answer is a BIG YES! Especially for babies 0-2m old. Sleep cycles in infants last approximately 40 minutes AND It is extremely difficult for some babies to fall back to sleep right after waking from a 40min nap BUT sometimes we need a nap to be a bit longer (like 2-3 sleep cycles long) to encourage a 3-4hrly feeding pattern... So to help babies link those sleep cycles, cuddling them back to sleep can ...help them get the extra sleep they need to keep to their ideal eat/play/sleep schedule. In fact, by assisting your newborn to go to sleep and stay asleep you are helping set their sleep program, making it easier and easier for them to want to go sleep and stay asleep at those times, making learning to self-settle so much easier because a positive sleep pattern has already been set. #newborncuddles #assistednaps #linkingsleepcycles #nestcare #melbourne #newborns

15.01.2022 In celebration of World Nursery Rhyme Week 2020, we wanted to share a fun fact with you DID YOU KNOW: nursery rhymes as we know them date back to the Middle Ages, though the first collection in English was Tommy Thumb’s Song Book in 1774. 13.01.2022 Together, we have the power to Restore Our Earth. Today is earth day, and the theme for this year is to Restore Our Earth, which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. Here are 3 ways you can help to restore the earth with a baby:... 1 Reduce: If possible use second hand baby clothing, babies grow so fast and many baby outfits can be used by multiple babies before wearing out! 2 Reuse: Use cloth nappies as much as possible instead of disposable 3 Recycle: Use glass baby bottles, these last much longer than plastic ones It is up to each and every one of us to Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. Making small changes is the first step. We all need a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option it is a necessity. #earthday #earthday2021 #reducereuserecycle #earthbaby #restoreourearth #nestcare

13.01.2022 Don Herold (July 9, 1889 June 1, 1966) was an American humorist, writer, illustrator, and cartoonist. This quote about babies really makes me think just how much of a blank canvas babies really are. I ponder often when working with new babies what type of a person they will be/become. Have you ever envisioned similar? #babies #nestnannies #theworldisyouroyster #blankcanvas #wonder #babiesarecute

12.01.2022 Here is some lovely client feedback on our MATERNITY CONSULTANT service. Thanks for the feedback Abbey :) "The maternity consultant came on the perfect day as we were having such a hard time breastfeeding... I wouldn't have been able to express and feed as sucessfully as we did without her guidance... she was so gentle with the baby and I (I'm a bit fragile with the feeding issues)... we now have a feeding plan, routine and learnt some new tricks so I am feeling more confident already" - Abbey Walters #maternityconsultant #breastfeedingsupport #newborntroubleshooting #nestnannies

12.01.2022 Baby heads smell amazing. I could smell and kiss them all day! Did you know smelling babies heads is a thing? A study by Frasnelli et al 2013 found subjects in their study who sniffed babies heads had brain activity reactions that excited the reward centre so much it caused addictive tendencies (the potenital for us to crave and seek out babies heads to smell) similarily to how we would react to delicious treats (hello easter chocolate... I will find you)! So if you ever think you're weird for seeking out a baby head to sniff... your not alone! sniff...sniff away. #babiesheads #babysmell #nestnannies #addictedtochocolate #addictedtobabies

11.01.2022 Did you know certain foods contain an amino acid called tryptophan which makes us sleepy? Protein helps us build up tryptophan amino acids whilst carbohydrates help carry the tryptophan to our brain. This is why pasta, bread and or carb heavy meals can make you feel drowsy. Therefore, one of the best bedtime snacks for kids that help induce sleep are ones that contains both protein and carbs. For example, cheese and crackers, toast with nut butter, milk and protein powder or yoghurt and muesli. #sleepyfoods #nestnannies #whyyoushouldeatcarbsfordinner #midnightsnacks #sleepykids #modernsleeptraining #dietforgoodsleep

10.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW Lullabies are a universal settling tool that can be found in EVERY human culture! 08.01.2022 Let’s talk POO! Talking about and inspecting poo probably was not high on your most talked about conversations lists until you have a baby! Inspecting your babies POO can tell us a lot about your babies gut health and as such knowing what is and isn’t normal is important! There is a variety of colours (and textures) when it comes to baby poo, and more often than not these variations are mostly normal. If you have any concerns about your baby’s Poo, speak to your doctor or ch...ild health nurse. #babypoo #poo #nestcare #poocolours #guthealth #nappies

08.01.2022 Early morning waking! There can be lots of reasons but here are the top 4 for 6-9m old babies! 1 Afternoon nap too late.... Babies need to have a good awake window before bed (2-3hrs) and many have a longer afternoon awake period (2.5-3hrs) than the rest of the day (1.5-2.5). Always try and have babies up from their 3rd nap by 430/5pm if aiming for a 7/7.30pm bedtime. 2 Morning nap too long. Yes, if the morning nap is longer than 2hrs for some babies this is simply because they are catching up on missed night sleep. Cutting back to 40-80 min for some babies can be plenty 3 Hungry Babies have small tummies, it can take them time to learn to feed/eat enough in the day to no longer need to eat at night. A quick feed might be all they need to go back to sleep easily. 4 Cold Now winter is here babies can get cold! Body temp naturally dips in the early hours of the morning so if you suspect your baby is cold try adding more layers, socks and or a space heater in their sleep space. #earlymorningwakingtips #cold #hungry #awakewindows #nestcare #goodsleephabits

04.01.2022 So cute! Do your children bedshare? I often find my co-rooming children end up in one bed! So long as everyone is quiet and they sleep well it can work great for some siblings, especially if they are anxious or prone to night waking.

04.01.2022 Wrapping (which is also called swaddling) is a great technique that can help you put your baby to sleep, safely. If you choose to swaddle follow these guidelines DO:... always make sure baby has lots of room to bend their legs up, keep the bottom loose- Think FROGGY legs always lay a swaddled baby on their back to sleep wrap your baby SNUGGLY not TIGHTLY- you should be able to fit 2 fingers between swaddle and baby's chest use natural, breathable materials like cotton, muslin or bamboo consider a sleep sack as an alternative DON'T: straighten your baby's legs to swaddle them pull baby's arms down or across to swaddle- let them fall, or place in midline swaddle too tightly stop swaddling when baby shows signs of rolling in any direction place a swaddled baby on their side or tummy #sleepsafety #swaddlingtips #swaddle #swaddling #swaddlingbaby #nestcare
