24.01.2022 Last week Dr Greg Cunningham had the pleasure of presenting to 30 General Practitioners on 'The diagnosis and management of common spinal complaints'. It was an excellent evening co-hosted by Guardian Exercise Rehabilitation & Custodian Work Assist who work closely with the team at NeuroSpine Institute. Dr Cunningham also participated in a lively panel discussion on a workers' compensation multidisciplinary case study, alongside a Workplace Rehabilitation Consultant, Physiotherapist and two Accredited Exercise Physiologists. A great evening of education !

24.01.2022 NeuroSpine Institute Spine Surgeon Dr Paul Taylor is a keen educator, often travelling nationally and internationally to teach, mentor and support surgeons adopting the Minimally Invasive Surgical techniques into their practices. During these COVID times, he continues to commit to providing education to improve patient outcomes.

24.01.2022 Spine Health Week aims to raise awareness of the importance of spine health. The spine covers and protects the spinal cord of the nervous system, which controls every cell, tissue and organ in the body. At NeuroSpine Institute, we take a patient centred approach to surgery and non-invasive treatments. We offer management of all simple and complex spine surgical problems in the whole spine requiring either anterior or posterior surgical approaches for primary and revision spine surgery problems. We use conventional and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) techniques (Keyhole Surgery) where appropriate. Visit www.nsiwa.com.au to find out more about spine conditions and spine procedures.

23.01.2022 From today, all non-urgent elective surgery is postponed. NeuroSpine Institute doctors continue to service patients and referrers by offering outpatient consultations in addition to video/telephone consultations for patients that elect or are unable to attend the rooms in person. Our rehabilitation physiotherapy service is also being offered by video/telephone consultations effective immediately. Elective surgery for URGENT cases is currently still being undertaken in the private hospital system. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions. Thank you for your understanding at this time. www.neurospineinstitute.com.au/news/

14.01.2022 Chronic neck pain is a difficult problem to treat and generally not amenable to surgery. NeuroSpine Institute leading Perth Neurosurgeon Dr Andrew Miles, shares a memorable case from 2016 where a 69 year old woman had been under his care for several years with severe unremitting upper cervical neck pain and severe deformity producing constant rotation and lateral flexion of her head, making it impossible to look straight ahead. Extremely severe osteoarthritis deforming upper... cervical joints was the cause. The symptoms failed to respond to all pain management interventions and the only option left was an occipitocervical fusion to abolish all upper cervical joint movement. 3 months after surgery during the follow up consultation, the patient was almost pain free, looking straight ahead with a nice smile on her face. A very satisfying outcome and Dr Miles commented he wouldnt normally fuse the base of someones skull to their upper cervical spine for neck pain but disabling pain and deformity called for desperate measures #NPW2020 #nationalpainweek https://neurospineinstitute.com.au/about-us/#dr-andrew-miles

14.01.2022 Today we remember those we lost fighting for the lives we now have. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning; We will remember them."

14.01.2022 As community and professional sports begins to resume, Spine Surgeon Dr Greg Cunningham wants to remind adolescents and young adults ignoring persistent sports related back pain can have significant but preventable long term consequences. "In young athletes who have ongoing back pain from sports, around half will be caused by a Spondylolysis or a pars defect. This can be readily identified using a specific MRI sequences (not included as part of a routine spine MRI) and successfully treated in most athletes, without surgery, allowing return to even professional level activities.
