20.01.2022 Dear Sydney Marae Alliance Inc Congratulations on securing land to build a Cultural Centre (Marae) in NSW. Thank you for including our WWII Veterans in your jou...rney right from the beginning, a journey that included them visiting the Whenua with the Church of Te Wairua Tapu, attending Council meetings and being involved in your organisational activities, events, planning and establishment through to your celebratory announcement. Sadly two of our WWII Veterans pictured are no longer with us: NZ WWII (Greece/Crete) Veteran 1221 T/SSgt Frank Harlow (10.08.1913-16.09.2015) and NZ WWII (Italy) Veteran 82871 Cpl Maurice Borland (27.06.1918-02.09.2015). 03.01.2022 Dear NZ Veterans, remembering our Fallen at the Sydney Cenotaph. Lest We Forget

03.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET: NZSAS Malaya Veteran 551823 Pte Nepia Piripoi KAA Dear NZ Veterans, yesterday we attended the funeral of NZSAS Malaya Veteran 551823 Pte Nepia P...iripoi Kaa. The service was restricted in numbers due to COVID-19 and even though it was a Hindu service we would like to thank Dr Hirini Kaa, Matua Prince Kaa and Shelley Kaa for allowing a few of our ANZAC Veterans to attend and give a Eulogy of Nepia’s military service and also conduct the emotional Poppy ceremony which was followed by the Last Post, Minutes Silence and Rouse. Nepia enlisted into the Royal New Zealand Infantry on the 24 September 1953 at the young age of 19. At that time military service was compulsory for healthy New Zealand Men of military age from 19-45 liable for active service overseas. 18 months later after completing his compulsory service obligations Nepia then enlisted into the regular force of the Royal New Zealand Infantry and New Zealand Special Air Service on 7 June 1955. Five months later, on the 20 November, Nepia departed NZ for training in Singapore before entering Malaya eight days later on the 28 November 1955 as part of the 133 strong NZSAS squadron attached to the British SAS. Nepia was only 21 years old. This theatre of operations was known as the Malayan Emergency and the NZSAS Squadron was the NZ Governments first contribution to the war. The following links provide more information on the NZSAS involvement in the Malayan Emergency: https://nzhistory.govt.nz//new-zealand-special-air-service https://sofrep.com//sas-in-malaya-the-new-zealanders-arri/ On the 11 June 1957 Nepia left Malaya having served a total of 18 months and 14 days in a theatre of operations. On return to New Zealand Nepia served a further six months before seeking his release on the 6 June 1958, a total of four years, 8 months and 13 days of loyal and dedicated service to New Zealand. For service to his country, NZSAS Malaya Veteran 551823 Pte Nepia Piripoi Kaa was awarded the following medals: New Zealand Operational Service Medal for operational service since WWII http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/category/c/c2.html General Service Medal 1918-62 with Clasp ‘Malaya’ for services in Malaya http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/category/h/h22.html New Zealand Defence Service Medal with clasp Regular for services to the New Zealand Defence Force http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/category/n/n1.html The Pingat Jasa Medal awarded by the King of Malaysia to British Commonwealth personnel who served during the Malayan Emergency. http://medals.nzdf.mil.nz/category/l/l2b.html Thank you to the Veterans that attended which was very much appreciated: NZ WWII (Bougainville/Guadalcanal/Korea) Veteran Ken Frank; NZ Malaya/Borneo/Vietnam Veteran Charlie Karena; NZ Malaya/Borneo/Vietnam Veteran Bunny Tareha; NZ Malaya/Borneo Veteran Ian Lucas; NZSAS Vietnam Veteran Maj (Rtd) Terry Culley, and ADF Veteran Brent Kerehona. 01.01.2022 Dear NZ Veterans, our Indigenous Veteran Sub-Mariner David Williams was not able to join us this year, due to Coronavirus, as he does every year at our marches and services but David ensured our Indigenous Fallen will always be remembered as he held his own Service of Remembrance at this home. And what an incredible visual reminder of ANZAC past and present from all wars, campaigns and conflicts. Thank you David for ensuring our Veterans are never forgotten.... Lest We Forget. The Torres Strait Islander Flag (Far Left): The Torres Strait Islander Flag is green, blue, black and white. The green stripes represent the land. The blue panel in the centre represents the sea. The black lines represent the Torres Strait Islander people. The white dancer’s headdress in the centre is a symbol for all Torres Strait Islanders. The points of the white star represent the island groups in the Torres Strait. The colour white is a symbol of peace. The Australian Aboriginal Flag (Middle): The Australian Aboriginal Flag is black, red and yellow. It has three important parts, and the most common interpretation of the colours is: The top half is black and represents the Aboriginal people of Australia. The bottom half is red and represents the earth and a spiritual relation to the land. The yellow circle represents the sun. The Tino Rangatiratanga Flag (2nd in from right): The various elements of the Tino Rangatiratanga Flag represent the three realms of Te Korekore, potential being (Black, top); Te Whai Ao, coming into being (Red, bottom); and Te Ao Mrama, the realm of being and light (White, centre). The koru is symbolic of a curling fern frond, representing the unfolding of new life, hope for the future and the process of renewal. The flag should always be flown as depicted above, that is, with the black section at the top, the top part of the koru closest to the flagpole, and the red section of the flag at the bottom.
