18.01.2022 #OTD: Victory in Europe (VE) Day On the 7th of May 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender on all fronts. The following day, May 8th, was declared as Vi...ctory in Europe Day. Although the war in the Pacific was to continue until August, VE Day marked the end of five years and eight months of continuous conflict. Australia’s involvement in Europe began on the 3rd of September 1939, and saw Australians from all services in theatres from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Australians fought in the skies over Britain and on the mountains of Greece and Crete, in the deserts of Egypt and North Africa and across the fields of Europe. Nearly one million Australian men and women served in the European theatre. Five Australians were awarded the country's highest award for bravery - the Victoria Cross - during the war in Europe. More than 10,000 died, another 10,000 were wounded and a further 8,000 became prisoners of war.
