25.01.2022 What a transition to a just and caring society would look like....

24.01.2022 Public schools face $19b shortfall while private schools are over-funded. What does it mean for students and teachers?

22.01.2022 Cheap, reliable renewable energy is already a reality and as I told the NSW Parliament this week: the dark black fossil-fuelled fairytale is coming to an end. ...But the NSW Liberal-National government is still lining up behind the Federal government to give 900m of our public funds (yes! The latest estimate is 900 million!) to prop up a dead industry. All while ignoring the very real needs of coal and gas communities who need genuine vision and support for a transition that is happening, whether they are ready for it or not.

22.01.2022 Save our Aussie whistleblower David McBride

22.01.2022 The watchdog first recommended that the ICAC Act be amended to improve the whistleblower protections in 2014. Why is it taking so long? The NSW Ombudsman has revealed the government is sitting on its 27th draft of a bill to enhance protections for whistleblowers, seven years after it was first recommended by the corruption watchdog. https://www.smh.com.au//simply-unacceptable-whistleblower-

20.01.2022 Lighter Footprint’s Community Batteries event online 7.30pm June 30. It sounds like a really interesting event that might provide some useful information and strategies for our region to take advantage of being declared a Renewable Energy Zone. https://lighterfootprints.org/event/community-battery/?

20.01.2022 Out of date Angus Taylor noted on Friday that natural gas had provided 26 per cent of Australia’s energy mix in 2018-19, and 20 per cent of total electricity generation. .... he 'forgot' to mention that it fell to just 8.6 per cent of generation in the National Electricity Market over the past 12 months! https://reneweconomy.com.au/australian-renewables-hit-new-/

19.01.2022 This is what could happen if we follow out-of-date Angus' attempts to sabotage the energy market! "Both Carney and Turnbull saw the prospect of the European Union (and perhaps others) creating carbon taxes for other nations not taking enough climate action as a real possibility, with Turnbull saying French president Macron had made that very clear."

18.01.2022 Recognising the problem is the first step towards fixing it. https://www.facebook.com//a.1680912375529/1901431866811250

18.01.2022 Currently green hydrogen costs about $5 a kg. The cost needs to fall below $2 a kg to be competitive with fossil fuels. Some researcher think this might happen by the end of the decade. https://reneweconomy.com.au/australia-has-38gw-of-green-hy/

16.01.2022 Tax cuts = cuts to services, cuts to health, cuts to education. Tax cuts for millionaires won’t help our recovery. We need to *invest* to recover.

14.01.2022 Dubbo hearing of the Rural Health Inquiry, 19 May 2021. What can be done to fix the problems? The State Government spent $72.5 million building a new hospital at Parkes and it was completed in 2014. Local Mayor Ken Keith OAM has told the latest hearing in Dubbo that several of the departments lie empty because there are not enough clinicians to operate them. ... "The service level agreed to by the Department of Health for the Parkes community unfortunately have not been met," Mayor Keith told the hearing. "Two state of the art operating theatres are under utilised [and] the maternity service offered in Parkes is no longer operating there." Mayor Keith said despite the investment in obstetric services and the creation of a midwife-led model, there have been no babies delivered in Parkes since 2019. Women are instead sent to Forbes or Orange to give birth. https://www.abc.net.au//health-chiefs-appear-at-/100144562?

13.01.2022 The Senate will vote on Tuesday. https://www.acf.org.au/email_senators_waste_laws For two decades now, federal governments have tried to impose radioactive waste dumps on unwilling remote communities. And next Tuesday, while everyone is understandably focused on a COVID budget, it's happening again.... Barngarla Traditional Owners oppose a national radioactive waste facility at Kimba in South Australia. They were excluded from a community ballot and consultation on the plan and now the federal government wants to push through changes to radioactive waste laws to remove their legal right to challenge the dump. Radioactive waste pollutes air, soil and water. Radiation can damage the genetic and reproductive systems of plants, animals and people. Decisions on handling radioactive waste last longer than this generation. I believe a quick email from you can have a big impact on your representatives in the Senate in the next three days. Senators need to know the community is watching and we won't stand for it. When people like you stood with Indigenous leaders in the past, together we've protected Country from radioactive waste. Senators from the Australian Labor Party, the minor parties and independents have the power to block unjust changes to radioactive waste laws. Send a quick email before Tuesday- ask Senators to protect community voice and legal rights to challenge radioactive waste.

13.01.2022 Interesting information!

13.01.2022 More evidence that we need to take effective Climate Action Now, and take seriously the risk of passing climate tipping points. The Pine Island Glacier has contributed the most to sea-level rise from Antarctica over the past few decades, and holds enough water to raise global sea-levels by half a metre. "What is worrying is that we weren't expecting this much shelf loss from this part of the ice sheet," said lead author Ian Joughin from the Polar Science Centre at the Univer...sity of Washington. "It's entirely possible that the rest of the shelf could break up in the next decade or two now that the process has started," Professor Joughin said. https://www.abc.net.au//glacier-pine-island-anta/100197856?

12.01.2022 Leaked documents reveal that the purpose of the government’s "Sustainability Action Taskforce" is to to increase the number of people that exit the NDIS and r...educe overall spending on funding packages. It’s completely unacceptable that there’s a group of people working in the agency right now to kick people off the scheme. 12.01.2022 Every time I visit the forests in this region I’m struck by both their incredible beauty and the passion of the local community for protecting them. What I saw ...yesterday was forests with enormous potential, not as woodchips but as places for tourism, local engagement and recreation. With a small investment we could create networks of walking and mountain bike trails, places to camp, sensitive eco-tourism and kayak trails, while also protecting these forests. Protecting these forests from logging doesn’t mean locking them up, it can mean opening them up in a way that has never been possible before

09.01.2022 Instead of the economic madness of allowing new coal mines, we need a just transition to help workers, as the demand for thermal coal inevitably falls away to zero. https://reneweconomy.com.au/nsw-accepts-thermal-coal-is-se/

08.01.2022 GREYHOUNDS NEED YOUR HELP: NSW Parliament has set up an inquiry into the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission, the oversight body for the gambling-fuelled g...reyhound racing industry in NSW. 07.01.2022 NEWSFLASH If you stop over-policing First Nations kids, there will be fewer kids in jail. This proves what advocates have been saying for years, it is the ...NSW criminal justice system that is responsible for so many First Nations kids in jail, not the behaviour of Indigenous young people. 06.01.2022 Why can't the COALition understand rational economics?

05.01.2022 Contrary to Mr May's claim of simply "receiving" a report claiming an apparent $24 million mistake that had occurred before they were elected, councillors voted... at the December 2019 meeting for training in financial decision-making, to be held as early in the new year as practicable. "We wanted expert advice on how to deal with a difficult situation, including rate-pegging, cost-shifting and major reductions in government grants," said suspended councillor Dr Dorothy Robinson. "Most of the now-suspended councillors attended the entire training session, conducted by Dennis Banicevic, Director of Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, who has over 30 years experience in local government finance and audit. However, three of the four councillors who have now resigned either didn't turn up or attended for less than an hour." .... "Amalgamations are expensive," Dr Robinson. "Despite the claimed millions of dollars mistake, ARC's $3.8 million problem was slightly better than the average for councils that were subject to forced amalgamations according to the report "Council Amalgamations, a sea of red ink", by accountant and finance professional Brian Halstead (see picture). "ARC's finances obviously suffered from mistakes in procedures to account for the fact that the merger didn't happen at the end of the financial year. The period between 12 May and the end of the financial year is a time when councils spend more money than they receive, so some adjustments are necessary. "Armidale Dumaresq and Guyra Shire Councils had $4.85 million more in reserves on 12 May 2016 than the start of the 2015-16 financial year. "Brian Halstead's report avoids that particular problem by comparing the last FY before the merger with projections for 2018/19." After the financial training, the majority were trying to fix an even more pressing problem according to Dr Robinson. "We were addressing the loss of capable, experienced staff with expertise in water, engineering, library and governance, and the talk from exiting staff of internal bullying and fear in the council offices," she said. "There were also problems caused by the transformation project's multiple restructures that appeared to be making council less efficient at a great cost. "We have no idea why Mr May is apparently trying to blame us for all these problems, when we were doing our very best to fix them under very difficult circumstances." https://www.armidaleexpress.com.au//the-case-of-the-missi/?

04.01.2022 Unlike Labor, the Greens aren't shy in our support for unis. We've already committed to *all of this*. That's why any Labor government needs Greens in shared power to push them to go further and faster in support of our unis and public education.
