24.01.2022 Good Afternoon I am the Secretary of the New Farm Bowls Club. I would be very interested in obtaining historical photos and information about the Club that we can add to our website or display in our Clubhouse. If any one can assist that would be appreciated. Thank you.

22.01.2022 Hello Ron, Fifty people were able to see/listen to the presentation by Dr Toni Risson last Saturday, and also enjoy sucking on the contents of a small bag of sweets each during the talk! Sweet history and sweet tastes!

21.01.2022 Hello Ron, AS we approach the first meeting for 2021, it seems ages sinc...e our November meeting about the Brisbane floods. Luckily there’s a report in our latest Newsletter. During this pandemic period, it seems that many have used the time to catch up on their family history. As a result, the Society has fielded a whole variety of enquiries. Have a glance at page 4 to gain an overview. A peek into the world of the flight attendant is the subject of our coming meeting when we’ll welcome former stewardess and author, Libbie Escolme-Schmidt OAM. I will look forward to seeing you on Saturday, 27 February, 2-4pm, at the Uniting Church Centre, 52 Merthyr Road, New Farm. There will be room for 100 attendees with no need to book. Regards Ross Garnett President See more

17.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW that until the 1st World War the area now known as Teneriffe was considered to be part of Bulimba?? Trains on the "Bulimba Branch Line" crossed Ann... Street carrying coal to the Bulimba (later Newstead) Gasworks and the Newfarm Power Station, sugar cane to the CSR Refinery and wool to the numerous Woolstores in Teneriffe. The Bulimba Brewery was also located on the corner of Florence Street and Vernon Terrace! It was not until the 1st World War that the part of Bulimba on the north side of the river changed it's name to Teneriffe to avoid confusion with mail deliveries. However the train line that served the area was still known as the Bulimba Branch Line until its closure on the 1 November 1989! Bulimba is believed to be the only suburb in Australia that actually straddled a major river. See more

12.01.2022 Hello Ron AS the report about the October meeting explains, Melissa Fagan, a fifth-generation member of the McWhirter family, swept into our gathering and blew the Covid cobwebs away. Those present were entranced, as were the many listening/viewing from home.

06.01.2022 Hi everyone just wanted to share some pics hope you like. Still another 30 pages in the book really detailed hope you like. My grandfather gave me this book ab...out 30yrs ago it's very old only missing the front cover 65 pages of all about the planning the cost and the why behind the the story bridge and the people who had a part in the bridge. He also had 2 full photos that were pages long that I got framed that were separate form the book. The before and after photos of the story bridge. It was very special to my grandfather and when I look at it it's like yesterday he showed me and gave this to me. I will donate these eventually as no one left to give them too and they should be admired by people.

03.01.2022 By Ray Thurlow: Here is a summary of what I have found through my research: New Farm was once called Binkinba or Binkin-ba by the indigenous Turrbal tribe of Brisbane. Patrick Logan established a farm in the area in 1827. A race meeting was proposed to be held on the new Race Course" at THE NEW FARM, North Brisbane (SMH 31 Mar 1846 P2) The Moreton Bay (MB) Race Meeting was scheduled to be held this year in the vicinity of the new farm (MBC 27 May 1846 P3)... The annual meeting of the Moreton Bay Racing Club took place at the Race Course, New Farm (MBC 20 Jun 1846 P2) James Burnett, a market gardener, was reported to be residing at New Farm (Domestic Intelligence, MBC 11 Sep 1847 P3) The 1846 article suggests New Farm may have become semi-official about this time. 02.01.2022 Hello Ron, WELCOME to our 'Border Open' issue of the Newsletter. The most exciting announcement is that the Society will resume monthly meetings in August b...ut with a difference. See the front page of the Newsletter below for more details. Remember Trittons in George Street? Read about one of their daughters, Nell Tritton, whose Parisian exploits made world headlines. Closer to home, you are offered a peek into what it was like growing up on Teneriffe hill during 1930s-40s, courtesy of sisters-in-law, Diana and Jean. With luck, many of you will be able to enjoy our first 'post-isolation' meeting on Saturday, 22 August 2020, either online or in person at the hall. Stay safe and best wishes. Regards Ross Garnett President
