24.01.2022 COVID testing has played a critical role in enabling fertility procedures to continue in 2020. So this International Pathology Day, we want to give a huge shout-out to all the pathologists around Australia who have been processing the hundreds of thousands of COVID swabs taken this year. It’s been a massive effort in labs right around the country, but particularly Melbourne. Thanks to you, we’ve been able to proceed with procedures safely and allow women and couples to continue their fertility journey despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Never before has pathology testing made such a contribution to the wellbeing of our community. To all our pathologists and the providers that support you, we say thank you. #knowpathologyknowhealthcare #IPD2020 #RCPA #covid19 #covidtesting #fertilityprocedures #covidsafe #newlife #newhope

23.01.2022 It’s International Nurses Day! Here at Newlife IVF, we recognise the incredibly important role that our amazing fertility nurses and day surgery nurses play throughout our patients’ treatment journeys. They are a fountain of compassion and knowledge, providing both practical and emotional support when our patients need it most. Thank you ladies for the care you deliver our patients and the way you light up our clinic each and every day! #internationalnursesday #fertilitynurse #ivfnurse #fertilitysupport #ourteamrocks #newlife #newhope

23.01.2022 Day 14. As Elsa sings in her anthem of acceptance, ‘let it go’. 2020 certainly hasn’t been the year most of us were expecting. Many people have found their plans side-lined by the pandemic, including their goal to fall pregnant. Others may feel like they had even more opportunity than usual to fall pregnant yet that didn’t go to plan either. As the year comes to a close, make your peace with 2020, so you can move into the new year ready to try again or to seek the help you need. #advent #frozen #thepastisinthepast #elsa #day14 #ttc #christmas #acceptance #letitgo #helptofallpregnant #stilltrying #fertilityjourney #fertilitysupport #bestlaidplans #peace #joy #family #newlife #newyear #newhope

23.01.2022 Dr Chris Russell in action during a video consult. Patient feedback about virtual consults has been very positive. Patients are finding these appointments extremely convenient with no parking, wait times, etc., saving them time, money and hassle. They also report that service levels remain very high, with Newlife’s confident use of videoconferencing technology making consults easy and seamless. All our fertility doctors and nurses are conducting virtual consults for both metro and regional patients. If you’d like to book an appointment and get your fertility journey started, call (03) 8080 8933. 22.01.2022 It’s Fertility Week 2020 and this year’s theme is ‘Age & Fertility’ in an effort to build greater awareness of the relationship between advancing age and reduced fertility. While nobody can change their age, understanding the chance of conception for men and women at different ages can help women and couples make informed choices about when to start trying for a pregnancy. It can also help people make decisions about whether to start fertility treatment. For more informatio...n on this topic, we refer you to one of our most popular Fertile Thinking blogs: ‘The ART of falling pregnant later in life’. 19.01.2022 Over the last six months, Melbourne’s women and couples have had to remain isolated from family and friends while undergoing fertility treatment. While supporting our patients throughout their treatment journey is always a big part of what we do at Newlife IVF, it’s never been more important for us to support our patients well. So when we get messages of support back from our patients (like the one in this post), it’s truly heartening. 17.01.2022 Did you know that Newlife IVF uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to identify, tag and track each patient’s eggs, sperm and/or embryos during their time in the IVF laboratory? This automated electronic witnessing system (called RI Witness) records and monitors the movements of all patient samples and every procedure undertaken in our lab. This prevents mix-ups and facilitates mandatory double-witnessing. Modern RFID systems have several major advantages o...ver traditional witnessing, which previously left lab processes exposed to human error. First, RFID reads all samples automatically and simultaneously in the individual workstations in our lab, and has in-built defences to prevent the mismatching of patients’ gametes or embryos. For example, RI Witness will alert the operator immediately before samples are manipulated if incompatible samples are identified in the same work area. This allows corrective action to be taken while the integrity of the samples remain intact. Bespoke protocol integration ensures every operator, procedure and witnessing event in the Newlife IVF laboratory is captured. In doing so, electronic ID tracking mitigates the risk of human error, providing peace of mind for our embryologists and patients alike. #peaceofmind #rfid #patientsafety #tagandtrace #electronicID #ivfprocess #keepingyourembryossafe #safeguards #embryologist #embryology #ivflaboratory #bestscientificpractice #newlife #newhope

16.01.2022 Day 15. Taking the first step on a new journey, or even the next step on an old journey, can be hard. Sometimes the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to get going. So why wait for the new year? Day 1 doesn’t have to be Jan 1. Dive in now and take the next step before the new year rings in, e.g. set up that appointment you’ve been meaning to make; get going on those resolutions to eat better or exercise more; start researching your options and making a plan. You’ll feel b...etter for having made a start and won’t feel so pressured at the beginning of January. You’ll also probably enjoy your Christmas break more, knowing you’ve already set a plan in motion, so now it’s just a matter of continuing your efforts, rather than a whole, new start. #advent #day15 #ttc #helptofallpregnant #fertilitywise #fertilityjourney #fertilitysupport #headstart #divein #bringiton #ivfgotthis #summer #joy #family #newlife #newyear #newhope

16.01.2022 Kindness has made a comeback in 2020 and we’re all the better for it. When we first opened Newlife, one of our goals was to always deliver a patient experience rich in kindness and compassion. That remains our aim, no matter what, and is why our team is so important. When you come to us, having found yourself on a journey you had never expected, you’ll first find kindness. Because that’s all any of us really need to get through the day. #worldkindnessday #bekind #fertilitysupport #fertilityjourney #ivfsupport #caring #experienced #specialists #newlife #newhope

15.01.2022 One woman and a microscope. What a powerful image! Pictured is Jessica, one of our Senior Embryologists. She is performing a procedure called ICSI (IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection), whereby a single, high-quality sperm is injected into an egg to help the two meet and come together to form an embryo. We may recommend ICSI as part of the IVF process when we need to overcome barriers to fertilisation, i.e. when sperm and egg can’t successfully come together on their own. We wer...e reminded last week that Jessica and our wider team of embryologists are important role models for young women. A high school student recently contacted us to ask for advice on what to study at University if she wanted to work in embryology. So for others that may also be wondering, to become an embryologist, you usually have to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Science (majoring in Biology) or Biomedicine at university, followed by a Masters or postgraduate qualification in a relevant field such as reproductive science. It’s a highly specialised but very exciting and rewarding field imagine coming to work each day knowing that you are helping to bring new life into the world! #womeninscience #embryologist #embryology #ivf #ivficsi #icsi #fertilisation #fertilitytreatment #ivflab #embryologylab #ourteamrocks #boxhill #sunnyday #newlife #newhope

15.01.2022 Day 19. A woman’s body goes through a lot during fertility treatment. Much like the intense physicality of a dancer’s life, fertility treatment is also very physically demanding. It requires its own unique form of athleticism. Infertility discussions often focus on what a woman’s body can’t do, but it’s far more important to celebrate what a woman’s body can do particularly when put to the test. #womenshealth #fertilitytreatment #ttc #helptofallpregnant #fertilityjourney #fertilitysupport #ivfgotthis #newlife #newyear #newhope

13.01.2022 UPDATE 12/5: In last night’s budget announcement, it was confirmed that $95.9 million has been allocated to new tests on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) for pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) of embryos for specific genetic or chromosomal abnormalities prior to implantation and pregnancy. Genetic testing enables healthy embryos or those unaffected by a specific disorder to be selected for transfer during an IVF cycle, increasing the chances of a healthy baby. While P...GT is not suitable for all couples, it may be requested by couples where one or both partners is a carrier of a genetic condition with the aim of not passing the condition on. The Federal Government’s funding is being allocated to these couples. Genetic testing is usually performed on embryos in the lab at 5 days old. We use an embryo biopsy (pictured in this post) to extract a very small number of cells from an embryo for testing. Meanwhile, your embryos remain growing and developing in our incubator. Test results then aid in deciding which embryo is selected for transfer. Our genetic counsellor, Katherine, plays an important role in helping couples decide whether PGT is right for them and how they want to proceed once the results of embryo screening are known. Where indicated, PGT gives couples the option to make reproductive decisions in line with their personal values. We look forward to further details of the funding once the budget is formally passed. Note: all medical and surgical procedures have potential risks and benefits. As always, consult your doctor for medical advice specific to you. #medicare #federalbudget #genetictesting #pgt #embryoselection #embryo #embryotransfer #newlife #newhope

08.01.2022 UPDATE 27 MAY: As per the announcement by the Victorian Government this morning, the whole of Victoria will enter into a 7-day circuit-breaker lockdown from midnight tonight. During this time, you are still permitted to leave home for medical care and IVF procedures, including embryo transfers (which are classed as Category 1), will continue as scheduled. We are waiting to hear word about elective procedures (e.g. egg freezing) and will provide further updates as more inform...ation comes to hand. Please be reassured that full COVID-19 precautions are in place at all our sites to protect our patients and staff, including mask wearing, hand hygiene, social distancing and frequent sanitisation of high-use surfaces. If you have a face-to-face appointment with one of our doctors, nurses or counsellors in the next 7 days, this may be changed to a telehealth or video appointment via Teams. You will be contacted directly with the necessary details. As always, if you have cold or flu-like symptoms, please do not attend any of our sites. Call our clinic first on (03) 8080 8933 and follow the Victorian Health guidelines for getting tested. As health providers, we fully support vaccination and encourage those who are eligible to book their jab now. Eligibility has opened up to those 40-49 years for the Pfizer vaccine but bookings are essential -- these can be made via the coronavirus hotline: 1800 675 398. To all our patients: stay safe, take care. We’ll share some posts over the next week that focus on stress relief and mental wellbeing during fertility treatment, to provide an extra source of support while your contact with family and friends is limited. #melbourne #lockdown #lockyd #covid19 #coronavirus #fertilitycare #virtualcare #fertilitysupport #newlife #inthistogether #takecare #staysafe

06.01.2022 The ‘Your IVF Success’ website (yourivfsuccess.com.au) was launched by the Australian Government today to provide independent information on all fertility clinics in Australia. This is possible because all Australian-accredited IVF clinics provide data to the Australian and New Zealand Assisted Reproduction Database (ANZARD). The new website is able to use ANZARD data to calculate and present IVF success rates from different clinics in exactly the same way making clinic suc...cess rates comparable and simpler to interpret. While Newlife IVF appears on the new site, you may be surprised to find that no results are yet listed for our clinic. This is because our clinic opened in 2019 and the website is based on ANZARD figures from 2018. 2019 figures are expected to be published later this year. We are very proud of the live birth rates we are seeing at Newlife IVF and can’t wait for them to be published. While our clinic is young, our clinicians have a depth of experience having trained and worked with other well-known IVF providers, both in Australia and overseas. In setting up Newlife IVF, our founding doctors were able to create a practice that better reflected their values and preferred model of care. Our Medical Director, Dr Nicole Hope, has been awarded a CREI (the highest qualification you can achieve in specialist fertility training), while our Scientific Director, Dr Tiki Osianlis, is renown as one of Australia’s most senior embryologists. To read more about IVF success rates, you can visit the new site at yourivfsuccess.com.au. 02.01.2022 COPING STRATEGIES | Does your mind get a little too busy at times? Why not try a meditation app like ‘Calm’ to help quiet your mind, get ‘grounded’ for the day, and create a sense of peace? While it takes practice and some getting used to, meditation is a great tool to have up your sleeve especially when your day or week is a little more ‘charged’ than usual. So schedule some self-care this lockdown week by trying a 10-minute guided meditation each day, then see how you feel at the end of the week. Many of the apps do free trials so it can be a great way to see which one works best for you. #lockdownlife #mindbody #peace #findyourcalm #meditation #selfcare #ttcjourney #ivfsupport #newlife #newhope

02.01.2022 The Pfizer vaccine is now being made available to Victorians 4049 years old. Bookings are essential and can be made by the coronavirus hotline: 1800 675 398. Depending on your situation, our advice is as follows: Q: Should I have the COVID-19 vaccine if I’m undergoing fertility treatment or IVF? A: Yes. Based on advice from the Australian & New Zealand Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, we support the decision to get a COVID-19 vaccination during fertilit...y treatment. There is no evidence that the vaccine will affect your overall fertility or current treatment, nor the pregnancy that follows. This is true for both men and women. Q: If I am currently awaiting the results of a pregnancy test after a recent embryo transfer or other fertility treatment, and I discover I am pregnant, should I go ahead and have the COVID-19 vaccine? A: Maybe. The vaccine has been inadvertently given to many pregnant women around the world with no increase in the rate of pregnancy complications or foetal abnormalities. Having said that, it has not been specifically tested on large numbers of pregnant women, nor are there any long-term studies looking at the developmental outcomes of children born to mothers who have been vaccinated. Being vaccinated in pregnancy requires balancing the potential risks with the undoubtable benefits. We recommend discussing these issues with your fertility specialist or obstetrician. Q: What should I do if I am already pregnant following recent fertility treatment? A: If you have a recent positive pregnancy result, it is best to speak with your fertility specialist or obstetrician. They will review your risk factors and make a decision based on what is best for your stage of pregnancy, exposure risk and medical history. 01.01.2022 Newlife IVF education night | This week, our Scientific Director and Chief Embryologist, Dr Tiki Osianlis, gave the Newlife team an update on the science of egg quality and fertilisation. These monthly education meetings provide a valued forum for our embryologists and fertility specialists to learn together and to share our expertise with one another, as we stay abreast of new advances in care. It’s just another example of how we approach fertility care as a team everyone has their role, but we work together.
