25.01.2022 TEDDIES GO TO LACHLAN Last Tuesday, Lion Dick Andrew delivered teddies for the first time to the Lachlan Fire Brigade who were very happy to receive them. Phil ...Pyke appreciated that the teddies are valuable support especially when dealing with incidents involving children. We are expanding the number of local services who use the teddies, as well as keeping up with demand. Last week, when Dick ran into Digby, one of the local ambos, he let Dick know that they need more. It’s great to know that these soft, cuddly comforts are so valued. In the group photo from the left: Dick with firefighters Les Horsey, Greg Essex, Stephen Townsend, Alex Thomson, Stephen Butters and in front Bill Rye. In the other photo firefighter Brittany Brown shows the teddies

14.01.2022 Hello everyone, one thing I know for sure is that this Christmas will be different, but this Christmas is coming and we can contribute to it being a wonderful ...joyous time. We have much to be thankful for this year. We are in the very early stages of planning our activities and no final decisions have been made. What I do need is a show of hands from those keen to be involved in the delivery of Christmas joy over the few weeks before the 25th December. We will at no time be placing anyone in harms way with full COVID 19 safety plans in place for volunteers and the general public. So if keen please let me know.. hope you are all well Nicky See more

05.01.2022 SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL WOMBATS Since local Wombat Warrior, Vanessa Fletcher, addressed one of our meetings in March, our Club has been working to support the figh...t against Wombat Mange in the Derwent Valley. This very serious and pervasive problem is caused by burrowing mites, is easily spread and is a painful death sentence for our beautiful wombats. Vanessa, who is a member of the Wombat Protection Society of Australia, Wombat Rescue Tasmania, was so passionate and engaging at that meeting that we made a donation towards treatment costs. Since then, Vanessa has identified speeding traffic as an additional threat to wombats with mange whose eyesight and ability to move quickly is compromised. Traffic is also a threat in a couple of places where wombats regularly cross roads in their territory. So over the last few months, we have been working with Vanessa and Derwent Valley Council to create road signs asking drivers to take care and slow down in those areas. Council will put up the permanent wombat crossing signs. The wombat being treated signs are temporary and will need to be in place over a 3 to 6-month period depending on the number of sick wombats and how well they respond to treatment. Lions and Vanessa are currently looking at where they will be put up and seeking any necessary permissions. So hopefully they will start appearing in the next couple of months. Vanessa is happy to speak with anyone who wants to know more about wombat mange especially the signs to look for and how she treats it. She asks that residents of the Valley support her by letting Wombat Rescue Tasmania know when and where we see a wombat. Just call 0419 585 001. They will contact Vanessa so that she can check it and, if necessary, treat it or let you know that she is treating it. When Vanessa treats a wombat she marks its rump with a non-toxic orange paint so that it is easily recognisable. As the wombat starts to heal it looks worse before it improves. Please don’t shoot a wombat that looks sick thinking that you are ending its suffering without talking to Vanessa first. It may actually be on the mend. Let's help heal wombats in our Valley and support Vanessa to treat as many as she and her supporters can. Lions Australia. We serve more than sausages In the photo Vanessa and Rodger Triffett display the signs. It was taken on the bridge on Black Hills Road where two local wombats regularly cross.

05.01.2022 SUPPORTING LIONS AUSTRALIA SPINAL CORD FELLOWSHIP The Lions Club of New Norfolk has recently made a donation to the Lions Australia Spinal Cord Fellowship, than...ks to the generous support of our community. The purpose of the Fellowship is to support StepAhead Australia which was previously known as the Spinal Cord Society of Australia. StepAhead is a research organisation dedicated to funding the discovery and development of new therapies for people who have suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury or who live with chronic neurological disorders. The Lions Australia Spinal Cord Fellowship enables Australian researchers to study the latest treatments for spinal cord injury both within Australia and the USA. The knowledge and experience gained is then made available to the Australian community. A primary research focus is the development of ways to promote the formation of new neural circuits (neuro-plasticity) within both the brain and spinal cord that can support recovery of neurological functions. In the vast majority of spinal cord injuries there are surviving neural circuits which may be stimulated to form new circuits. Importantly, neuro-plasticity based treatments will also be applicable to other chronic neurological disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS), Around 15,000 Australians live with a spinal cord injury and between 300 and 400 new cases are recorded each year. Eighty-four percent of people with spinal cord injuries are men. A common misconception is that sports activities cause the majority of spinal cord injuries. However, studies show that the two leading causes are motor vehicle accidents, most frequently in the 15-24 year age group, and falls in people over 65 years of age. Australia unfortunately has one of the highest rates of spinal cord injury per capita in the developed world. Despite advances in rehabilitative medicine, the quality of life for patients is poor. At present there are no clinically approved treatments that can promote significant recovery of spinal function. However, StepAhead Australia believes that is all about to change. Lions Australia. We serve (more than sausages)

02.01.2022 Cards from New Norfolk Primary School At New Norfolk Primary School, the 2/3 and Prep/1 classes have been focussing on acts of kindness as part of our whole sch...ool Bridge Builders program. We knew that because of COVID, there were people in our community who could not currently spend time with their friends or loved ones. We wanted to do something to show support and to let people know that we care about them. Our friends at Corumbene welcomed our idea to connect and share kindness through cards for the residents living there. We hope that everyone enjoys the cards we have made and we look forward to being able to continue connecting and spreading happiness in our community! Love from New Norfolk Primary School x

01.01.2022 What a cracking Opening week at the pool. Caught up with our wonderful operator Tai today, whilst my own kids had a swim of course. But great to see councils in...vestment in the long awaited Family change rooms now underway, and due to be completed soon. This council funded project will enable mums and dads to be able to change and look after children in a safe space for all genders for example (mums can change boys without taking boys into the female changing rooms) and visa versa. It will also be disability compliant. This should be finished soon, along with extra car parks new and defined spaces for the existing car park, there is some real investment happening at the pool site this year. Get on down to the pool and support your local facilities
