24.01.2022 ‘Oceti Sakown Camp, North Dakota, USA Saturday, September 10th, 2016’, 51 x 34 cm, editioned archival pigment print $700 A group of dancers from various... indigenous backgrounds perform a Mexicoto Aztec dance around the sacred fire at the Oceti Sakown camp. It was common place for all tribes to perform a dance around the central sacred fire as they arrived and departed from the camp. Unfortunately but understandably, by mid-September camp elders banned photography in the vicinity of the sacred fire, essentially stopping the photography of these powerful dances. One of the images from our current exhibition STANDING ROCK by Angus Mordant Closing soon - don't miss your opportunity to see this compelling exhibition!

16.01.2022 Opening NEXT WEEKEND at Magnet - and we've just confirmed that this exhibition will be opened by internationally-recognised indigenous artist Maree Clark.....very happy! Angus Mordant will be talking at Magnet on Friday 27th (day before Opening) at 2.30pm. All welcome! This talk will be really valuable for photography students - come and hear from Angus (former RMIT student) how you get your foot in the door of freelance photography internationally!

13.01.2022 Across the road from the gallery is Fairfield Park Station, the name was changed to just Fairfield in November 1943.

12.01.2022 We're sorry to announce that indigenous artist Maree Clarke is unable to be with us at Magnet tomorrow evening to open Angus Mordant's exhibition Standing Rock ...However, we're delighted to also announce that TIRIKI ONUS has agreed to step in and do the honours for Angus instead. Lecturer in indigenous arts and culture at the WILIN CENTRE, at VCA, Tiriki is a Yorta Yorta man and a champion of indigenous culture and constitutional recognition. He'll be well worth hearing and has a great understanding of the situation of the Sioux people whose resistance to desecration of their tribal lands is the subject of Angus Mordant's powerful documentary. STANDING ROCK will be opened by Tiriki Onus tomorrow evening (FRIDAY 28 OCTOBER) from 6.30pm Below: Tiriki Onus with his own possum-skin cloak at MAGNET last year. Photo: Michael Silver

Fearing law enforcement would desecrate their camp the protestors took matters in to their own hands and ceremoniously burnt down anything they couldn't take with them. 06.01.2022 The annual women photographers' exhibition at Magnet invariably includes some brilliant work from a large number of photographers. We schedule this show to con...nect with International Women's Day (8th March). In 2018 it will open on 1st or 8th March. The themed exhibition is open to all women photographers. Interested? To find out more, send an "expression of interest" email to Susanne at : [email protected] We always close the women's show with an informal dinner in the gallery - here's a group shot of some of last year's exhibitors who came to the feast, along with Helen Scott (R) from Landcare who opened the show GAIA - Mother Nature.
