22.01.2022 April’s FEATURE Class & Community Gathering: Joins us for a special feature class and community gathering afterwards. Bring a plate to share and something you’d like to sip on Flow into Stillness (VinYin)... Lead by Baillie April 30th 6pm $5 members, $15 non-members This 75 minute yoga practice will begin with the yang style practice of vinyasa - a dynamic flow aligning movement with breath and in doing so creating heat and strength to open up the body. We will cultivate a state of deep presence from this initial moving meditation and then slow it right down and soak into some deep and juicy yin holds. Our yin practice sees us holding poses for roughly 4 minutes. This time allows our yin (deeper) tissues to be accessed and takes us on an opposing practice to our yang style, as we receive the benefits in the surrendering to the poses and in some cases to the discomfort too. For further details on this class and to book your spot, head to www.nsyfc.com.au/events #vinyin #vinyinyoga #vinyasa

20.01.2022 We can get so caught up in all of these fancy ways to breathe in our yoga classes but it seems that we have forgotten our foundations of breathing naturally. Think of your entire yoga class as one big breathing exercise, where essentially your asana (postures), exist as a way to challenge your constant connection to calm, relaxed breathing. This is really important to prioritize in your practice, as it has become all too commonplace for us to be DISconnected to calm, relaxed ...breathing throughout our day. Through the use of natural breathing, you'll spend the majority of your practice in parasympathetic arousal (rest and digest) and as little of your practice in sympathetic arousal (fight or flight) as possible. When we try and practice fancy breathing techniques amongst dynamic effort filled movement, it often results in OVER breathing or UNDER breathing. As a result of not appreciating the subtle art of learning how to just breathe normally, we can actually stress ourselves out in a yoga practice in a way that isn't really useful or needed. If you want to practice fancy alternative breathing techniques, try it from a seated position where you feel supported and comfortable enough to put all of your focus on the breath. When you are dynamically moving, just focus on breathing naturally in a calm and conscious way and become a master of that approach first!

19.01.2022 We are really pumped to share the details of our new pilates class with you! 'PILATES REDEFINED' will replace Vinyasa on Sunday mornings as of April 25th. Join the newest member of our team, Francesca, as she leads you well beyond your mainstream Pilates experience. Through her guidance, you'll learn to correctly utilize your trunk stability muscles in everyday life. The long-term changes will greatly improve your posture and balance, in addition to managing any possible back...-pain. Confidence and resilience in daily activities will be increased as you get stronger and reconnect to your deep core muscles. As a back pain sufferer, Francesca has spent the last few years on a quest to learn more about ways to teach Pilates in a safe environment in alignment with the principles of health and wellness. She says: "I’ve also learnt first hand that, what is appropriate for one person, doesn’t necessarily work for another. With that philosophy in mind, I encourage students to approach the practice in a way that is non-judgemental and aimed specifically at their own body and how it’s helping them feel better. Every exercise has layers and how to choose the right layer depends exclusively on where our body is at that day. Sometimes, scaling back isn’t just the smart thing to do but also the best thing to do for its long-term benefits. Other times, when we can count on the full support of our body, we’ll choose to scale up instead." We are so looking forward to having Francesca join the NSYFC team and share her philosophy and passion for Pilates with us all!

14.01.2022 Our very first pilates class is fast approaching this Sunday! Join Francesca for Pilates Redefined every Sunday at 7:30am. Using your own body weight and resistance through functional movements you will challenge the stability of your pelvis and your core in all different positions. There’s no part of the body that doesn’t get a little love during this mindful session. While a slow pace is required to bring awareness to alignment, there will be slightly faster segments, with ...the general flow of the class remaining dynamic. The benefits gained from this practice are accessible to all levels, as you'll be supported to find the right depth/intensity for you depending on where your body is at that day. While the class is low-impact, expect to get sweaty and leave feeling energised and accomplished from noticing progress after only a few sessions! We look forward to seeing you there!

12.01.2022 Is your yoga class, a practice or a performance? At first thought, most of us would probably say "practice of course!" But let's just reflect on this together for a moment. Have you, in your yoga class, ever experienced any of the following?... - Trying to do a pose the 'RIGHT' way - Trying to achieve 'CORRECT' alignment - Pushing past red flags because apparently, 'magic only happens outside of your comfort zone' - Trying to contort your body so that your pose looks like someone else's - After attempting a personally challenging yoga pose you summarize your efforts with a statement (or thought) along the lines of; 'I can't do _______ pose' - Viewing someone who has a certain physical facility as being 'good' at yoga - Thinking that the benefits of a yoga pose occur only when you reach the peak of that pose - The pressure to move and breathe in synchronicity with others despite the fact that it doesn't feel good for you - Doing something painful because you don't want to disappoint the teacher If you said YES to any of the above, your yoga class has been about performance at one point in time or another. Centering your class around a performance based approach has its time and place and can be beneficial for different reasons. BUT, this all depends on what you want to achieve. To approach your class with the intention of practice over performance, means that you step away from the boxed in parameters of having to achieve something, in a certain way, in a certain time frame without ruffling too many feathers along the way. It means you can lean into trusting your intuition whether you find benefit from lying on your back for the entire duration of a Power Vinyasa class or challenging yourself by holding a pose for a little longer than your mind might want you to. The conditioning most of us have (a lot of it comes from schooling days) to not move or speak out of turn, can be hard to break through and requires some work. It might involve relinquishing the value you hold of yourself surrounding your achievements. It might mean really truly turning your gaze inward and focusing on what YOU need. Isn't this what a yoga practice is ALL about; to reconnect back to what's essential for you? At the end of the day, it all comes down to aligning your actions with your intentions. So, first become aware of what your intentions are with your yoga class, then you can begin the actionable process of approaching it in alignment with those motives.

10.01.2022 Feature Class Alert Roll & Release; Full Body Tune Up This Roll and Release class is a great way for anyone experiencing tightness in their muscles or feelings of restriction in mobility to begin releasing tension within the body. ... There will be a large focus on connecting to the breath while massaging the muscles using the self-myofascial release balls. You’ll gently move through releasing tension throughout the whole body spending a couple of minutes on each key area to target the muscles and connective layers of fascia. With Becky as your guide, you’ll be assisted in finding ways to access areas of your own body. This will be a journey inwards to help connect not only to your deepest layers of tension but giving yourself time and space to sit with and show compassion to your more vulnerable self. You will leave feeling a sense of deeper connection to what your body needs, most likely an immediate shift in how mobile your body feels and more awareness of how breath can help shift your mental and physical state. We are really looking forward to learning some super effective ways to release tension, as these techniques can be used anytime, anywhere by anyone! Bookings are necessary for this class; $5 for members and $15 for non-members. Head to www.nsyfc.com.au/events for more information and to reserve your spot.

03.01.2022 Do you practice what you preach? NSYFC’s guiding mantra behind our four core pillars is to; ‘PRACTICE YOUR PRINCIPLES, DON’T JUST SPEAK THEM’ As a yoga student, have you ever been under the impression that yoga teachers don’t need to practice in a public class setting? This myth is often enforced by the teachers themselves who for some reason also often think that it’s not necessary for them to practice with their students. ... We are so lucky to have a team of teachers here at the centre who actually engage in public classes alongside with you. All of the NSYFC crew actively gaze inward to their individual intentions behind teaching/practicing/their lifestyles, and work to align them with their actions. And we are SO proud of what they bring to the community! #yogateacherslife #yogateacher

02.01.2022 Splits 2 Ways Image 1: This represents the use of force to push the body into a split position. This is the most common approach to flexibility and actually puts you at high risk for injury with minimal reciprocal muscle activation to support this demanding stretch. Image 2: This represents zero use of force and is 99.9% risk free! The use of opposing muscles to create a release means this supine method is incredibly accessible by all (especially those who love to sink int...o their overly glorified hyper mobility). Unfortunately it’s not a common approach and deserves WAY more credit than it gets. Both ways can work for different people, for different reasons. However, approaching splits according to Image 1 (particularly in the absence of something like Image 2) seems to be more of a performance based method. So you might ask yourself; what is your intention with your yoga class? Does it revolve around ‘practice’ and generating more harmony within the body or does it often revolve around performance and show? There isn’t a right or wrong answer. But there’s so much value in defining for yourself, what your intentions are and then aligning your actions with your intentions!
