22.01.2022 You can make a student visual schedule PORTABLE by adding Velcro to a pencil holder. You can store multiple icons/PECS images inside and only use the ones you n...eed. Its great for students who attend different classes throughout the day. You can even take actual photos of places/items at your school and use them if thats easier for your student to understand. Its super easy to change when special events come up such as an assembly or picture day as long as you have photos or images for the events.~Susan School Bells N Whistles See more

21.01.2022 When they say, "too quiet," I see introspection. Don't change, thoughtful one. You're going to bring quiet wisdom to the chaos. ... When they say, "too inquisitive," I see problem solving. Don't change, great thinker. You're going to bring answers to the toughest questions. When they say, "too energetic," I see vitality. Don't change, lively one. You're going to bring joy and laughter to desperate times. When they say, "too sensitive," I see heart. Don't change, deep feeler. You're going to bring compassion to hurting souls. When they say, "too anxious," I see caution. Don't change, fierce protector. You're going to bring thoughtful deliberation to tricky situations. When they say, "too distracted," I see observant. Don't change, wise Noticer. You're going to bring attention to the most important details of life. When I did my student teaching, I was drawn to the kids whose desks were pulled away from the rest. It was easy to see that the negative labels they were given were negatively impacting them. I decided the most important thing I could do was reframe the labels so kids could see their perceived weaknesses as strengths and with some nurturing, those gifts could shine. Working with these kids led me to become a special education teacher. While some might say I taught them, I would argue that they taught me and the most important lesson being that when the world says a child needs changing, that’s our cue to look deeper and think bigger. Perhaps when we do, we’ll see something worth protecting and nurturing. Perhaps when we do, we’ll see a human being uniquely equipped to change the world. -Rachel Macy Stafford If you’d like to learn more about reframing negative labels into strengths and equipping kids to overcome negative opinions and circumstances, my latest book #LiveLoveNow is a guide to becoming a relatable and trustworthy confidant for young people today. (https://amzn.to/34f0LN8) Reframing allows you to essentially redesign negative labels through a positive vision. By looking at your children through a positive lens, you are in better position to be their light protector and soul-builder. -Rachel Macy Stafford, Live Love Now

16.01.2022 Edit: Executive dysfunction is a part of ADHD, it's at it's core. This is an ADHD page. I share things based on my lived experience and diagnosis. The amount of... times I've heard people say "everyone does that" is part of the stigma we face everyday. The artist of this meme whom I've spoken with is also ADHD. This is an ADHD meme. 13.01.2022 Anxiety presents itself in many different ways (graphic + resources): The desire to control people and events Difficulty getting to sleep Feeling agitated... or angry Defiance and other challenging behaviors Having high expectations for self, including school, work & sports Avoiding activities or events (including school) Pain like stomach aches and headaches Struggling to pay attention and focus Intolerance of uncertainty Crying and difficulty managing emotions Overplanning for situations and events Feeling worried about situations and events For a deeper dive, including ways to support your young person/self, please see: Mona Delahooke, Ph.D., featured in a 2020 podcast from Parenting Mojo on "How To Help A Child Overcome Anxiety" (listen here: tinyurl.com/f7ms7wt6) From Autistic Science Person, "Anxiety Looks Like Anger" (tinyurl.com/y6caolyu) From Judy Endow via Ollibean, "Fear, Anxiety and Autistic 'Behavior'" (tinyurl.com/y4gum7be) From Dr Wenn Lawson, "Autism And When You Are Feeling A Bit Anxious" (view here: youtu.be/o8JWwl365Wg) and a valuable tip sheet for the classroom "When I'm Anxious" (tinyurl.com/y7xw6e8t) From Healthwatch Southampton, the "Anxiety Buster Tool" (tinyurl.com/z5t56h4w) Image credit: Pathway 2 Success

10.01.2022 READ THIS!!!! We need to give kids access to AAC (augmentative & alternative communication) early on if they are having difficulty speaking. Many parents are... against these alternate methods of communication because they are 1) understandably worried about their childs future, but also 2) are misinformed that AAC will prevent their child from verbally communicating. Its our job as SLPs to help parents understand that COMMUNICATION is the goal in therapy and also that research suggests AAC actually increases the likelihood of verbal speech. This is my favorite analogy that helps the concept click for many parents- dont just let them be, give them tools to help them be successful communicators! See more

08.01.2022 Look at the differences between a typical younger childs hand (left) and a typical older childs hand (right). I have parents asking regularly why their presch...ool aged child isnt able to write yet. This is why! Their hands (and brains) are still developing and are not fully formed. So what should they be doing to support this? PLAY!! Playdough, colouring, cutting, gluing, playing outside, digging in dirt, sensory play, dress up play, science experiments, beading, puzzles, throwing balls, etc. All of these things help their hands develop. When they are physically ready to write, they will! No need to rush them, they will show you when they are ready! See more
