24.01.2022 The herb of the month is Chamomile / or German chamomile. A member of the family, it is an annual herb growing up to 0.5 metres high with beautiful white petals and large yellow daisy-like flower heads. The medicinal part used is the flowers.... Chamomile is best known for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and carminative actions in the gut and is useful for indigestion, colic, colitis, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, and abdominal pain. Its calming and sedative action makes it a useful herb for mild anxiety and sleep disturbances especially in children. Although not often considered for upper respiratory tract infections, it has been shown to be anti allergic, anticatarrhal, and antimicrobial making it a great herb for asthma, hay fever, or the common cold, making it particularly useful coming into spring. It can be used topically in the form of a tea or ointment for any inflammatory condition of the skin. Chamomile is generally safe with the exception of those with a sensitivity or allergy to the asteraceae family and its pleasant, mildly bitter taste makes it an excellent herb to use with children and infants. Quiz: What colour is chamomiles volatile oil?

22.01.2022 Last week, a delegation from the World Naturopathic Federation attended the World Health Assembly, which ran digitally. One of those delegates is our own (from Australia, that is) Prof. Jon Wardle . This year and for the first time, the Word Health Assembly documents have specifically put Traditional and Complementary Medicine directly in as a requirement for their patient-centred and universal health care agenda. #NHAA #WHA #Naturopathy #HerbalMedicine

21.01.2022 What a valuable perspective on the profession and role of registration from Prof Stephen Myers; naturopath, doctor, researcher, educator and fellow of the NHAA.

21.01.2022 Every month, we find out about one of our members. Today, meet the delightful Regina Lasaitis Natural Health Practitioner, Medical Herbalist, Naturopath, Educator & Writer. She tells us about her affinity for Herbal Medicine inherited from her great grandmother, about lecturing at Torrens University, about attending the first NHAA International conference & much more... Can you introduce yourself I have been a practitioner of herbal medicine and naturopathy for over two dec...ades and currently have a clinical practice in Sydney where I support clients through various health challenges and have a special interest in anxiety, depression and women’s health, especially the menopausal transition. I lecture in herbal medicine and supervise student clinic at Torrens University (Australasian College of Herbal Medicine) where I love sharing my passion for herbal medicine. As an NHAA approved supervisor, I offer mentoring and supervision for newly graduated practitioners so I can continue to support them in this rewarding profession. How did you become a naturopath / herbalist? Prior to my career change I was a biomedical scientist working in microbiology but always had a keen interest in herbal medicine. Growing up in a family where, in the treatment of common ailments, herbs were always the first choice of medicine may have been an influence. My great grandmother was a herbalist in Lithuania so I feel my affinity for herbal medicine is inherited. Although I enjoyed my work in hospital pathology there was a feeling I was meant to be doing something else and it was while at an evening course on herbs for home use that a bolt of lightning or a light bulb moment inspired me to pursue qualifications in herbal and naturopathic medicine. How long have you been a NHAA member and what do you love about it? At least 25 years and love their focus on promoting and supporting the herbal medicine and naturopathic professions. I have attended all but the very first NHAA international conference and been a supporter and speaker at the Sydney chapter meetings. I was honoured to be awarded fellowship of the NHAA at the 2019 conference. Any favourite herb of yours? Why? As my students know I have many favourite herbs. One of my talks for SydHerbs was on my top 10 multi-skilled herbs and even then I couldn’t stop at only 10. Centella asiatica (Gotu kola) would be close to the top of that list: nervine, adaptogen, vulnerary, collagen promoter this wonderfully healing herb finds its way into many herbal formulations. Then another favourite is Rosmarinus officinalis, Rosemary for remembrance they say, but with its mood lifting and liver effects, makes it more than just a circulatory and cognition enhancer I often say to my students. #NHAA #Naturopathy #HerbalMedicine

20.01.2022 This week were answering your questions about the NHAAs push for registration and what it means for your practice. Will my Scope of Practice be constrained with professional registration Your scope of practice will not be constrained. Currently, practitioners are more controlled by the government than they would be if we had registration. For example, if someone makes a complaint about a Naturopath, it is reviewed by the health commissioner (or equivalent in their state), ...with no input from any representatives of the profession to provide context. With statutory registration, however, the profession itself determines its own practice and education standards. The Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency (AHPRA) provides a frame work for a Naturopathy Registration Board to oversee the profession. Will I miss out if I dont upgrade to a Degree No. Eventually, the minimum qualification for practice will be a Bachelor degree, but practitioners who are currently working as Naturopaths or Herbalists and hold qualifications that allow them to be a member of professional association (acquired before the end of 2018) will be covered with the move to professional registration.

19.01.2022 The NHAA are proud to support the ANCs fundraising efforts, as we have been advocates for professional registration throughout our long history

14.01.2022 Does registration mean Naturopathy is considered dangerous? This is a question that comes up when were talking about the campaign for professional registration, because one of the reasons for registration is to reduce the risk of harm to the public. NHAA members know that Naturopathy and Herbal Medicine are safe and effective when delivered by a qualified and skilled practitioner.... However, because we dont have registration, there are unqualified and unskilled people masquerading as naturopaths who have caused serious harm to their clients with misguided and dangerous treatments. These are the cases that make the news headlines, bringing our profession into disrepute and creating an atmosphere of mistrust of our work. We must also acknowledge that we use biologically active medicines, and help people who may have serious health complaints, so human error that causes harm is possible. Professional registration addresses these issues by ensuring high standards of education and skill for practitioners and stripping unqualified people of the right to call themselves Naturopaths or Western Herbalists.

14.01.2022 The results of the first survey of the Australian naturopathic profession since 2004 have been published, and there are some interesting findings. 80.7% of those surveyed believe integration with conventional heath providers was definitely needed for the future of naturopathy. Statutory regulation was reported as definitely needed by 65.4% of respondents, with (an additional) 24.2% indicating this was maybe needed.... The results also paint a picture of how naturopaths may play an important role in chronic disease management in Australia, and thus, may help address the objectives of the National Strategic Framework for Chronic Conditions. The survey found individuals in Australia who consult a naturopath report improvements in wellbeing (55.6%) and long-term health conditions (38.9%). Furthermore, patients accessing naturopathic care in Australia have reported experiencing person-centred care, which appears to be more pronounced among patients with chronic diagnoses. 14.01.2022 Why does the NHAA support professional registration? Over the next few days we want to answer some of the really important questions that have arisen from the NHAAs latest push for professional registration. The NHAA has supported a form of statutory registration for Naturopaths and Herbalists since it was formed in the 1920s (100 years). This is because registration ensures protection of title and provides practitioner education standards, meaning that only those who are qu...alified can practice under the title of Naturopath or Herbalist. Professional registration protects the public. There are well-known recent examples of people coming to serious harm at the hands of unqualified people masquerading as naturopaths. It also provides many other benefits, including: A readily accessible register of accredited practitioners Improved communication between health professions Ability for other healthcare practitioners to refer to the professions without fear of taking on a vicarious legal liability Assured continuing access to herbal medicines and other tools of trade Increased community confidence in the professions and its practitioners. Complaints handled by a Naturopathic Board made up of Practising Naturopaths

13.01.2022 As you are probably now aware South Australia will be implementing a circuit breaker since 12:01 am today, Thursday, 19 November 2020 for the next six days aiming to stop the spread of COVID-19 in South Australia. At this point the information provided by the government is still very basic, however: For work, you may only leave your house if you are classed as an essential worker.... Critical services include Medical Supplies and Medical Services. Using the criteria set by previous lock downs, Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine are not classed as essential, critical medical services. Therefore, until further advice is provided by the government regarding the definition of an essential/critical medical service, NHAA advise that you should work from home using telehealth. To keep updated see: https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/response We are thinking of all our South Australia members and encourage you to get in touch with us directly if you have any other questions or concerns. Our wonderful team is here to help and available throughout the week - call us on (02) 9797 2244 or email to [email protected].

12.01.2022 Member Profile: Belinda McPherson In 2013, former massage therapist Belinda McPherson was fresh out of uni when she created North East Natural Health Centre in Wangaratta, Victoria, along with colleagues Sophie Lorback and Michelle Cose. We asked her about her practice. Is there a particular favourite herb of yours?... Well that is like asking which child is your favourite... we never admit it out loud! We are fortunate enough to have a very large liquid herbal dispensary at our clinic and they all get used regularly. We are seeing a demand for adaptogens, nervine tonics and carminitives in the clinic. Unfortunately our community was just starting to see the fallout from the bush fires when Covid hit. So I am bracing for an onslaught of nervous system symptoms in the next few months. We are a strong robust community but these two events have hit us hard both emotionally and financially. What are the particular challenges and opportunities in a rural practice? Theres no doubt that working in rural Victoria can be challenging. It can be very isolating for some who work alone, and can be bloody exhausting without the support and organisation of a fantastic reception team. So for those of you out there doing it solo, my hat goes off to you!! We have been fortunate enough to have some amazing mentors such as Rachel Arthur, Rhiannon Hardingham and the lovely Gill Stannard who have helped us through all the adversities that we have faced. If you dont have yourself a mentor, get one, they are invaluable. Good news travels fast in the country, but bad news travels even faster, so honesty, authenticity and what we call a "real life" Naturopath approach is key. We coined this phrase because we wanted to portray ourselves as authentic. Were not perfect just because we are Naturopaths and we dont expect our clients to be either. We are not a pinterest-perfect practice and we find that this allows our clients to be real and honest with us and we develop a deep connection to them. How has your community responded to your clinic? Five years ago Sophie and I moved the clinic and joined forces with other practitioners in a multi modality practice, whilst Michelle took a well earned break. This was a first for our community, which has reacted with open arms through every step we have made. It was a real privilege to share the newborn days (I came back to work 2 weeks postpartum) with clients. It was lovely to come out of a consultation to see someone finding joy in a newborn cuddle or watching people feel at home in our clinic. Our community has responded well to DIY workshops that we have run in and around our area. We love getting involved in home remedies and making Naturopathy accessible and easy to implement for our clients, and they love it too.

08.01.2022 Every month, we find out a little bit more about one of our members. Today, meet the lovely Sarah Emily Herbalist. She tells us about her practice in Adelaide, growing up in a herb loving environment, attending the NHAA convention last year and more... Please introduce yourself / your clinic in a few words My name is Sarah & I work from my clinic in Adelaide, Eastern Suburbs. I am a herbalist & fall in love with herbs more & more each day as I see the amazing result they ha...ve on my wonderful clients. How/why did you become a naturopath / herbalist? I started studying herbal medicine in Sydney at Nature care college in around 2010 & graduated as a herbalist in 2015. We were brought up with natural medicine in the home, my mum has always been interested in using natural medicine on us kids. My grandmother is also a naturopath, so I think the love is in the blood :) How long have you been a NHAA member and what do you love about it? I joined when i graduated in 2015 and have been a member since, I love them because they focus a lot on herbal medicine & I went to their convention last year & it was a professional highlight with amazing speakers present & a good herbal vibe. Any favourite herb of yours? Why? Difficult questions, I have a few but if i had to pick one it would be Gotu kola, it is such a nutritive herb, amazing for healing the body & supporting the adrenals & nervous system. I think it gets overlooked a lot, but my teachers at Nature care really instilled a love of it in me, i think its in nearly all my herbal medicine :)

08.01.2022 NHAA Conference - Change of plans With so much disruption and uncertainty going on, weve had to postpone the NHAAs International Conference in Hobart next year. However, we still feel it is vital for our community to be able to come together and connect over shared knowledge and experience. So, we are now busy planning a local event for next year: a national symposium on herbal and naturopathic medicine.... We want this two-day event to celebrate clinical practice, showcase the work of our Australian researchers and hear wisdom from the professions elders. The NHAAs National Symposium on Herbal and Naturopathic Medicine will be held on the 1st and 2nd May, 2021, at Southern Cross Universitys Gold Coast campus. We will continue to share news and updates on our plans for this event over the coming months, so watch this space!

08.01.2022 Managing the current global pandemic requires utilising all available treatments and resources both within conventional medicine and within the field of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (T&CM). Naturopathic medicine / naturopathy is an established T&CM system of medicine that is practiced in 98 countries around the world. This current pandemic highlights the need to focus on lifestyle factors and to address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), both of which are stre...ngths of naturopathic practice. Recognising that there are limited treatment options and no cure for COVID-19 and building on contemporary research evidence, the global naturopathic profession undertook the task of analysing the current research and conducting rapid reviews to assess the role of specific naturopathic recommendations which may be useful in the management of COVID-19. 02.01.2022 Weve had lots of great questions from members about the NHAAs push for registration and how it might affect their practice. One of those questions is - what will happen to our traditions? Our traditions are just as important as ever - we use a system of healthcare with a deep history of traditional philosophies and practices - our traditions define who we are as a profession.... First, Do No Harm (primum non nocere) . Healing Power of Nature (vis medicatrixnaturae) . Treat the Cause (tollecausam) . Treat The Whole Person (tolletotum) . Doctor as Teacher (docere) Disease Prevention and Health Promotion These principles have international recognition and acceptance. Under registration, traditional understandings and practices are more protected because the people who decide what is acceptable Naturopathic practice are members of the profession itself as part of the Naturopathy Board.

01.01.2022 We understand there are some questions about provisions for Telehealth in the Naturopathy degree for those currently studying clinical practicum. In early April, the NHAA notified the colleges that during the pandemic, a maximum of 90 hours or 20% (whichever is the greater) of supervised clinical hours can be completed via telehealth. This decision was made in response to the social distancing restrictions that COVID presents whilst being balanced against the lack of prepar...ation for telehealth in the existing naturopathic curriculum AND the importance of having graduates highly competent in face-to-face consultations. Our original communication was in collaboration with the Complementary Medicines Association (CMA) and the Australian Register of Naturopaths and Herbalists (ARONAH). The NHAA has maintained communication with the colleges throughout this unprecedented time and will continue to do so in the future to ensure your clinical education standards are upheld.

01.01.2022 A worthy herb of the month for December and to end 2020 is Tinospora - also known as Guduchi or Giloy. A highly venerated herb in Ayurvedic medicine, this climbing shrub which originates from the Asian subcontinent is considered one of only three elevated amrit (divine nectar) herbs. As part of the Menispermaceae family, the bitter warming stem of Tinospora in particular, exhibits potent versatility. Within the Ayurvedic system it’s known as one of the best rasayan (rejuve...nator, protective, tonic) herbs available, nourishes all seven tissues or dhatus of the body and balances all three energetics of pitta, kapha, vata. It essentially covers all the criteria as a notable adaptogen which exhibits strong immune balancing as well as detoxification capabilities via the liver. On top of the adaptogenic, immune and liver arsenal, Tinospora is also frequently used as a medhya rasayan due to its neuroprotective effects which modulate energy through the nervous system to reduce extreme restlessness and improve cognition. It is often described as enhancing synaptic cleft flow. The herb has a good safety profile and is frequently used to treat children during complex developmental stages, as well as adults and also importantly the aged. Clinical studies are wide ranging from protection during stress and related decline, immune depletion and reactivity, as well as infection. Definitely a candidate herb to finish off the year!
