25.01.2022 TOURISTS RETURN TO THE NHILL AVIATION HERITAGE CENTRE Learning to fly has never been so much fun! Visitors were able to try their hand at flying during their time at the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre last weekend. Over 50 visitors from all over Victoria enjoyed their day out discovering some of Nhills past. The propeller from the locally built 1920s Silver Wings, the locally owned 1930s deSoutter, along with the Tiger Moth, Avro Anson and the Wirraway of the 1940s ar...e all on show as part of Nhills rich aviation history. The Link Trainer was a highlight for some visitors. This original flight simulator was invented in time to train hundreds of new pilots to fly at night or through clouds, during the Second World War . Climbing into a darkened cockpit pilots would follow their instructors orders and fly their plane, referring only to their instruments. Max Carland, of Nhill, a former RAAF pilot, remembers spending 28 hours in a Link Trainer. The best thing was you could always step out of it safely , even if youd had a rough flight or lost your way, he said. The NAHC will be open again this Saturday and Sunday from 10am -4pm . (Other times by appointment) Entry fees remain at $5, with children and members free . For more information phone 0490 657 770

24.01.2022 The Wirraway is coming today...slight hitch...will be here a little late....but will be here!

22.01.2022 LEARN TO FLY '1930’S STYLE' AT THE NAHC It’s not a toy, it’s a 'fair dinkum' fully functional, flight simulator used to train hundreds of pilots during World War 2. Our very own was generously donated by John Loader and has been meticulously restored by Neil Thomas from Halls Gap. Neil spent hundreds of ours working on it and sourcing parts from all over the world to get it into operation. This Link Trainer is similar to the two that were used here at the Nhill base. Pull dow...n the hood and the whole cockpit is in darkness. Only the instruments are visible. So there’s no looking out of the windows for landmarks, just eyes glued to the instruments, teaching pilots valuable skills for flying at night or through clouds. Come and have your very own 'flight' with us at the NAHC on Saturday or Sunday 10am -4pm. $5 entry fee (cash only please) Children and Members FREE.

22.01.2022 BOOK FAIR - FIRST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH! _-==-_BOOK SHELVES REQUIRED_-==-_ As you will be aware, we are running an ongoing book fair, which you are supporting very well...so a big thank you. This has been an amazing fund raiser for the NAHC. Do you have a bookshelf or shelving that is no longer required, which you would be willing to donate to help with the running of this book fair? If so we would love to hear from you. Via messenger or call 0490657770. Thank you.

20.01.2022 OLD MOTOR VEHICLE BATTERIES The NAHC collects old car, truck and heavy motor vehicle batteries as a way of raising funds to continue to grow this amazing tourist attraction for the community of Nhill. Batteries can be dropped off at Kingwill Engineering in Townsend Street, Nhill. Dont throw your old batteries into land fill, please give them to the NAHC. Thanks.

19.01.2022 WIRRAWAY A20-722 is finally home. After a few hiccups and a long wait the Wirraway finally landed at Nhill at approx 3pm. What a day! The number of people who turned up to support the NAHC and witness the flying in of the Wirraway just amazed us. We knew we had very strong community support for this project but yesterday really cemented just how strong this support is. On behalf of the Community of Nhill - A huge thank you to all who helped in any way, yesterday and over the past 2 years it has taken for us to come to this point. It was a real pleasure to know that we had raised the total funds required for the purchase by the time the Wirraway landed. THANK YOU!

19.01.2022 Some interesting information regarding the aeradio building at the Nhill Aerodrome. The building looks quite a bit different now, as it is being restored to original condition by volunteer locals.

08.01.2022 DATE CHANGE. This weekends 10th birthday celebration of the NAHC at the center will now be held on Saturday the 24th of November. Please spread the word.

07.01.2022 CENTENARY TRANSCONTINENTAL GROUP FLIGHT - Stopping off at Nhill on Saturday March 21. Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre Inc., has been invited by the Aviation Historical Society of Australia (NSW) Inc., to participate in the Centenary Transcontinental Group Flight which is a celebration of the centenary of the England to Australia Air Race, won by Ross and Keith Smith on 23rd March 1920. The group flight will stop off at Nhill on Saturday 21st March, 2020 as a staging point, for... refueling and also to visit the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre. Members of the public and aviation enthusiasts are invited to attend at the Nhill Aerodrome to witness part of this historic event. The number of aircraft stopping at Nhill is undetermined, with arrivals anticipated to commence around 11am. Aircraft that we are expecting include a Sea Bear and Pipistrel, (headline aircraft), Lake Buccaneer VH-TZT, Jabiru, Winjeel and a Cirrus. There may be a few additional aircraft but this will not be known until the day. A BBQ will be available for all visitors for a gold coin donation. At some stage during the day, time permitting, one of the Pilots Michael Smith will talk about his adventures and Tom Lockley the coordinator of the centenary event will talk about the history of the Smith flight. This is not a formal event, and there is no formal itinerary as the weather and other unforeseen factors will impact how the day turns out. We do plan however, to have our local Tiger Moth fly over the aerodrome and do a re-enactment of the letter drop, that took place during the air race, in the main street of the Nhill township in March 1920.
