24.01.2022 Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships NSW Department of Education Aboriginal Students Poster & Multimedia Competition Secondary students are invited to devel...op, create and submit a poster or multimedia piece reflecting the key messages to support Premier's Priority. The competition is open to all public schools and high schools. The aim is to launch the winning student(s) works by the end of 2020. Underpinning this promotion is the need for more young Aboriginal men and women to stay at school. Since COVID, sadly, more young Aboriginal people have not returned to school or have missed too many days of education. We know that staying at school until the end of Year 12 will significantly increase both life expectancy, life-wellbeing and lead to greater life opportunities. Land, family, law/lore, ceremony and language are five key interconnected elements of Aboriginal culture. We know that a young Aboriginal person's sense of identity is shaped in these vital years of education. Please refer to the link below for all the competition details. https://www.aecg.nsw.edu.au//Identity-and-Education-A-Dead

20.01.2022 #InThisTogether2020 #NRW2020 An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for anyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of ...Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country. This will help create a more united Australia, as we all walk together towards reconciliation. Corrimal High School has been lucky to have developed an Acknowledgement of Country written by our students, staff, community, Northern Illawarra AECG and Elders. 10.01.2022 Watch this witty and insightful film here https://bit.ly/33zl7Sf A couple of hundred years ago and a bit, all was well in Aboriginal Australia. People th...rived and life was good, people were happy.. and then all hell broke loose. The Aboriginal story is often buried deep beneath the accepted 247 year Australian historical narrative. It’s not that the Australian story is wrong, it’s just that it’s one-sided. Aboriginal filmmaker Trisha Morton-Thomas, bites back at Australian history in this inspired satire. Captain James Cook, a hero to most Australians but a thief to Aboriginal people, stole the continent with a British flag. The Aboriginal people had no idea what Cook was up to. They continued on with their lives, blissfully unaware that their 80,000 year kinship with their lands was about to be tested beyond their worst nightmares. Aboriginal people fought back against white domination, but numbers and guns were against them. In a long, ugly war, brave men, women and children died in defence of their country, yet the European narrative buried their heroic stand and failed to mention their names and deeds. And yet the voices of Black Australia would not be quieted. The concept of reconciliation became an ideological mantra and a political issue, and their spirit and resilience lives on.

09.01.2022 Today we remember and pay tribute to all who have served in the Australian Defence Force. While many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experienced di...scrimination in their own country they nevertheless stepped up to fight for Australia, often returning to a home that failed to recognise their contribution. Swipe to learn more about each of the Aboriginal Black Diggers featured in our "Remembrance Day" illustration.

09.01.2022 ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CHILDREN’S DAY We use local Dreamtime stories, our local language, our local culture. Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child ...and Family Centre helps kids develop a lifelong love of learning through language, culture and movement and with the help of Agy the Black Cockatoo. Aboriginal children of today are the Elders of tomorrow. That’s why community, culture and Country are so important in raising strong Aboriginal children. Cullunghutti Aboriginal Child and Family Centre is named after Cullunghutti Mountain (Coolangatta Mountain), which is a significant place of gathering. Cullunghutti means 'splendid view' in Dharawal. #EldersofTomorrow #StrongInCulture

07.01.2022 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that I share with you the loss of a quite warrior, a staunch advocate for Aboriginal education, an expert with bush plants and gardens, a mentor, friend, brother, uncle, father, grandfather and a warm, caring and loving man Terry Rankmore. Terry was always available to anyone who needed assistance with their bush/ bush tucker gardens in their schools and he willingly shared his vast knowledge with our Connecting to Country program participants. Terry’s loss will be felt by the many students he has taught over the years and our love and condolences go to all of those impacted by his loss. Sending our love to the Rankmore and extended family.

06.01.2022 Two wonderful presentations of Deadly Encouragement Awards. Whilst we missed having our usual awards day due to Covid it was still great to see the reaction of the students when receiving their awards at their schools presentation day.

06.01.2022 Our next Connecting to Country will be held in June 2020 at The Tops Conference Centre, Stanwell Tops. Connecting to Country is an Aboriginal community cultural awareness teaching program which provides a much needed cultural conduit between the States teaching fraternity and Aboriginal peoples and communities. Teachers are offered a unique opportunity to engage directly with Aboriginal Australians at the local community level. Over the course of three days, participating ...teachers will learn about local Aboriginal culture, history and social experience. By the end of the program it is anticipated that participating teachers will have significantly bettered the depth of their insight into the myriad of social, cultural, historic, economic and political issues that continue to affect and concern Aboriginal peoples and communities. Teachers will similarly attain a culturally informed awareness of the cultural geography of their local school precinct and more broadly their school’s region, and encounter firsthand the concept and meaning of country from an Aboriginal cultural standpoint. Participating in the Connecting to Country program will contribute to QTC Registered PD, from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
