25.01.2022 Connecting with your dog on walks and varying the route you take can make walks so much more fulfilling and interesting for both of you. It can also eliminate, or at least be a major step towards eliminating, many behavioural issues. Read on for a wealth of excellent advice.

25.01.2022 I love this. There are so many messages in this post that absolutely need to be spread far and wide. A long but VERY worthwhile read for you dog owners or would-be dog owners. Thank you so much, Ashleigh.

24.01.2022 These dogs are also asking, ...and why are the humans at home all day showing signs of severe separation anxiety?!

23.01.2022 This is heartbreaking. If youre sending your dog to a trainer, please, please research the trainer very carefully before putting your beloved companion in their hands. There are many wonderful trainers you can trust so please seek one of these caring and skilled people out. Theres no need to have your innocent dog hurt, physically or mentally, in the training process. The emotions, whether good or bad, that result from the process can influence future behaviour and the fal...lout from punishment can be unexpected and devastating. Look past all the promises and find out what the prospective trainers methods truly are. A trustworthy trainer will be open and transparent and will answer your questions on what they do and why. If your dog is to be left with the trainer for training, the trainer should not simply hand the dog back at the end of it, either, but should help you to know what to do from then on. See more

22.01.2022 Rockingham Dog Club Puppy Pre-School has some vacancies for their next course!

22.01.2022 Wonderful words of wisdom from an amazing trainer, Dog Training with Ashleigh Leece.

22.01.2022 Timely reminders with summer upon us early. More hot days are forecast this week so we need to ensure our pets welfare while everyones at work, school or other busy pursuits.

21.01.2022 Tell em what they want to hear. Engaging our dogs with us improves our bonding and behaviour. If we say only words that are really meaningful to them (eg their name) theyll take more notice. If we babble incessantly to them they may dismiss our words as white noise. What makes your dog really sit up and listen? The ones that mean something good is about to happen? Can you tell me five words that make your dog listen to you and why?

21.01.2022 Do yourself a favour and join the pack following Leader of the Pack for this excellent Lockdown Challenge.

21.01.2022 It’s so important to prepare not only yourselves and your home, but your dog as well, for the arrival of a new baby. This seminar covers all areas at least for preparing your dog for the impending arrival. It’s important information if you’re already a new parent too.

21.01.2022 A dog trainer is a people trainer with a passion for teaching, a love of people and dogs and dog-training skills and knowledge. If you have the passion and the love, get your skills and knowledge at VSDTA.

20.01.2022 How much time do we spend receiving and giving updates of whats been going on around us? Add up our social media, email, TV, radio, phone, newspaper and face-to-face conversation time and its quite a considerable portion of our day. News is important to us and it is to our dogs, too. Our dogs receive most of their news - their awareness of their surroundings and recent events, whos who and where theyve been - by sniffing and processing each scent. They also need a chance to join the conversation by leaving their scents. Lets allow them to fulfil these need as best we can.

20.01.2022 Definitely worth watching!

18.01.2022 Have I mentioned this before? Dogs need to dig! Its part of who they are. If your dog could have a special little place to dig, where shes not harming your plants, youd be doing her a great favour. Encourage your dog to use the place you choose, by burying treats and toys for her to find. Shell be happier, more mentally enriched and burn off some energy, too.

17.01.2022 Setting up a good confinement area gives your puppy a safe retreat in which to rest and play at those times when you cant properly supervise them. It also gives you peace of mind. Chewing is vital to puppies and being in the pen gives them access to only those items youd like them to chew on. Its wise to give them a good variety of safe chew toys because puppies use their mouths to explore textures as well as getting comfort from chewing.

16.01.2022 Three things: Input equals output. Wise words from a wise woman. Thank you, Colleen. Along the way, putting in what it takes and seeing the output, you will have many joyous and proud moments. As a dog owner, you can go from feeling stress or despair to feeling elated, proud of your dogs and your progress and relieved that you can make enormous changes. In my own dog, Springsteens, earlier days with us he needed lots of help. He was very fearful and reactive and strug...gled to cope with visitors, car rides and walks where other dogs and people were around and cars were going past. He could take days to recover from the stress of being faced with some of his triggers. *It was important that I sought help.* Yes, I am a capable dog trainer but sometimes we need help from a more experienced or specialised trainer who may also need to refer me to a vet behaviourist, as was necessary in his case. We work as a team. With the help and insights of Dr Nicole of Animal Sense and Colleen of Manners n More Companion Dog Training, I have been able to take Springy from almost hiding away from the world to feeling he can cope in an increasing variety of situations. Our walks are now far more enjoyable and relaxed, and I come back feeling happy and with a sense of achievement. Our work goes on. It takes time, patience and work. But the rewards are WELL worth it for you and the dog you love dearly. See more

15.01.2022 We get so excited by Christmas but for our furry family members it can be quite overwhelming. For the anxious ones, especially, it’s important that we consider how we’ll help them cope. Read on for wonderful advice from Animal Sense.

15.01.2022 Springsteen and I were chilling on the lawn after walking around in the sun for a while. We can get very busy walking our dogs and teaching them to do things but one of the best things we can also teach them is to do nothing. If your dog thinks leash only means busy, hes going to be frustrated and fidgety when you need to just stop and rest, pour a drink of water or talk to someone you meet.

13.01.2022 Equipment! When you are trying to change a dog’s association with scary triggers you need to be able to condition a new emotional response with food. Caregivers... need to carry food with them and have it easily accessible to deliver - hence do away with plastic sandwich bags in pockets and fiddling around. Worn on your belt around your waist - Animal Sense Treat Pouch. See more

12.01.2022 When youre busy outside, give the dog something to do, e.g. Natures snuffle mat.

12.01.2022 Our emotional state can have a profound impact on a dogs ability to learn.

11.01.2022 An all too common condition.

11.01.2022 It is perfectly OK not to socially interact with a stranger who is approaching you. Just give yourself permission...you dont have to make an excuse.

11.01.2022 Puppy love = puppy guidance.

11.01.2022 When youre despairing and your dog makes it all better.

10.01.2022 I recommend that everyone takes a walk through their local animal control at least once...any breed can end up there.

10.01.2022 I have found reward-based training works for building both confidence and responsiveness in dogs. This great article from Companion Animal Psychology tells us why its the way to train. Have you tried reward-based training with your dog? What did you do and how well did it work for you?

08.01.2022 Improving behaviour is a stop-start process. Stop - Punishing unwanted behaviour ... - Rewarding unwanted behaviour Are you thinking, What??! No, I dont reward unwanted behaviour!? Do you push down a dog that jumps up or allow a dog to move ahead when pulling on leash? These will reinforce the behaviour. Start + Training your dog regularly with positive, force-free methods. + Rewarding your dog for good behaviour that you normally find hard to get, even when you didnt ask for it. E.g. if your dog often doesnt listen to you, reward him whenever he looks at you.

08.01.2022 HOLIDAY SEASON AT NICE DOGGY DOG TRAINING Nice Doggy Dog Training is working on through holiday season. This is often a time when people are having a breather from work and can get busy on their training goals. Well only be closed 25 and 26 December and 1 January.

08.01.2022 Were in for some scorchers the next few days! Please read for excellent tips from Ashleigh. :)

07.01.2022 A dog makes choices and we choose which behaviour to reinforce and strengthen and then, guess what? We dont have to keep telling them what to do. I love the illustrations in this great story.

06.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. Stay safe and enjoy. Nice Doggy Dog Training is open Thursday to Sunday except public holidays.

06.01.2022 So much better for your dog than just walking along at your side.

05.01.2022 Weve all probably seen or even experienced it - a dog on a walk, hauling on the lead or collar with an effort that would win a sledding competition! If the hardest part of loose-leash walking for you is saying it without getting tongue-tied, thats great. The rest of us need some help. How do we turn that dogs drive to get ahead into a desire to stay near us and not pull on the leash?

04.01.2022 Thinking of getting an additional dog? Wed love to have another dog but our first dog isnt anywhere near ready for that and he may pass anxiety on to a new dog, so well be patient.

03.01.2022 Springsteen loves to lick grass after watering or, as in this case, heavy dew. What funny things does your dog do?

01.01.2022 What would success look like for your dog?
