13.01.2022 Transparent wood is coming, and it could make an energy-efficient alternative to glass! Scientists have discovered a way to make wood transparent by bleaching the lignin (one of its key components) in wood so that it no longer absorbs light or colours the wood. The great thing about wood in this application is that it's a really good insulator, so would help reduce heating/cooling requirements. ... Steve Eichhorn from the University of Bristol says, "making wood see-through, and retaining its high mechanical properties, would provide a good alternative to glass from a sustainable and renewable source". The technology is still under development, but you could be staring out an all-wood window in the near future! How cool is that?
