08.01.2022 Following on from my post about fruit and sugar a couple of days ago... if you are trying to kick the sweet stuff, the food industry can be very sneaky and may be hiding sugars in your food under these alternative names... always make sure you read the nutritional information so you know exactly what you're buying!

07.01.2022 | | EAT THE RAINBOW | | It’s a fundamentally healthy tip. But why is it important? Our bodies benefit from variety a variety of nutrients that come from eating a range of colourful plant foods! But it’s not only us that benefits from a greater diversity of plant foods, the trillions of bacteria our bodies host enjoy diversity too, with emerging research showing those who consumed >30 different types of plant each week had a much more diverse microbiome than those who consumed <10. And a more bacterially diverse microbiome has been shown to = a healthier you! Not sure how many you eat in a week?...jot down all the different plant foods you eat in a week to see how you stack up! 02.01.2022 What’s your body trying to tell you? The human body is a pretty incredible piece of machinery. When things go wrong, it sends us little signals in an attempt to indicate that something is not right think of these as little biological equivalents of the warning light that pops up when your fuel is running low. More often than not, we don’t take the time to properly decipher these ‘warnings’ and instead dismiss or supress them with a quick fix in hopes they will disappear ra...ther than addressing the underlying factors and getting to the cause of the problem. Meeting all of your daily nutritional requirements can be hard but these signs and symptoms typically mean we’re missing out on important nutrients that can lead to detrimental effects on your body’s metabolic processes such as a fragile immune system, poor mental health or even heart disease. Deficiencies can manifest in a number of ways and can present as skin symptoms such as those listed in the picture, however, a few other key symptoms include: Nails brittle, peeling, ridged, spooned, pitted, clubbed, white spots Tongue coating (white, yellow or black), scalloped edges, swollen and red, or geographic Restless legs, muscle cramps, or numbness and tingling in fingers and feet Fatigue, irritability, memory loss, headaches, breathlessness Loss of smell and taste, or unusual food cravings Poor night vision Take a moment to look at your body to see if it’s trying to tell you anything, and if it is, feel free to ask me, or seek a qualified nutritionist or naturopath to look at why these symptoms are occurring and how you can make changes in your diet to correct them. @thejulietreport

01.01.2022 It’s certainly getting real Wintery now! Risotto is such a deliciously hearty and warming Winter dish, and mushroom risotto is a particular favourite of my partner. But, being the nutritionist I am, I’m always looking to find ways to maximise the nutritional status of these favourites to keep them in high rotation. So rather than sending my insulin levels through the roof with classic risotto, I made a little swapsie from aborio rice to buckwheat groats which boast a much mor...e well-rounded nutrient profile loaded with minerals, B vitamins and eight essential amino acids. Throw truffle oil into the mix and this dreamy risotto is not only sure to satisfy but ticks all the nutritional boxes. Recipe below: 1 cup buckwheat, rinsed and drained 2tbs EVOO 1 leek, thinly sliced 1 brown onion, sliced 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped/minced 8tbs fresh thyme leaves 5 cups mixed mushrooms (I used portobello, porcini (rehydrated), swiss brown, and normal white mushroom cups) 1L of mushroom stock, heated (I used @stockmerchants mushroom stock but you can use commercial/homemade veggie stock instead) 6tbs nutritional yeast 4tbs grated parmesan or pecorino (optional) 1 lemon with rind zested and then juiced 1 cup flat leaf parsley, chopped 3 cups baby spinach Salt and pepper to taste Truffle Oil for serving Fresh rocket and toasted, chopped hazelnuts for serving In a large saucepan, heat EVOO and add leek, garlic, onion and thyme and cook until tender. Add mushrooms and cook until starting to soften season to taste. Stir in buckwheat, then add a cup of stock, stirring until absorbed. Continue adding stock in this way until it’s all absorbed and the buckwheat is tender. Meanwhile toast hazelnuts in oven (cook whole and rub to remove skins and then chop. Add in the nutritional yeast, lemon rind and juice, cheese, parsley and spinach and stir until the spinach has wilted. Serve with a drizzle of truffle oil over the risotto, a large handful of rocket and a sprinkle of hazelnuts (and an extra drizzle of truffle oil over the rocket if desired).
