Social is the rebirth of legendary live music venue Fly by Night by WA-based hospitality group Triple-1-Three, the organisation behind Otherside Brewing Co. The new venue comprises a live music space, four bars, a permanent food truck, creative co-working spaces and a playground. The building dates to 1895 (it was originally an artillery drill hall) and has been renovated in cooperation with the National Trust. Local artists have provided artwork across the venue. The entertainment hall has been upgraded with better acoustics, new sound systems and new green rooms. The flexible design accommodates standing gigs, dinner functions, theatre-style shows and community events. Maximum capacity for the venue is 900 people, but there are other configurations for smaller audiences and gatherings. Theres no shortage of beer, with 56 independent taps spread across the venue. While the majority will pour Otherside brews, local and international craft beers will also make an appearance. Otherside will also be brewing some more experimental beers on-site in the 500-litre microbrewery. (Their core range will continue to be brewed at their Myaree headquarters.) Weve got enough tanks to do one beer a week, so we want to do 52 unique beers a year, says head brewer Rhys Lopez. In 20 minutes we came up with about 100 ideas, so weve got a big list of suggestions. Between this venue and Myaree well be able to clear 80 per cent of those kegs, so we may release a few of them to trade. While beer is the clear focus, therell be wine on tap too. Wine on tap is better for the environment in terms of wastage and food miles, says Lopez. If you have a wine thats not moving particularly well, it doesnt matter if youre pushing it out with an inert gas. Its when it gets oxygen exposure you have to throw it out after a few days. Its easier to serve [on tap] and comes at a better price point. Freo.Socials rotating food menu is overseen by chef Stuart Laws (formerly of Don Tapa) and served from a permanent food truck and roaming carts. The cheeseburger and fried chicken doughnut-burger are likely to be a hit with the crowd. Ive done 27 menus for 12 months of trade, he says. Weve divided the food truck into two. On one side weve got a charcoal rotisserie and barbeque, for the opening week weve got jerk pork subs and Jamaican chicken. The other side is a more American diner-style offering, starting with burgers, then all-American sandwiches, then po boys. The food carts serve a range of smaller, ready-to-go items such as tacos, burritos, hotdogs, paella, fried rice, ceviche and desserts. Function catering options include platters, a food-truck tab or in the ultimate display of generosity renting a food cart. Freo.Social opens on Wednesday, March 20. According to the ABC, Hannah Rebecca Valentine has been charged with "59 counts of gaining a benefit by fraud", as well as previously pleading guilty to 22 counts of the charge. She has now pleaded guilty to an additional 28 counts and is yet to plea to a further nine charges. Its believed Valentine netted around $10,000 from the sales, which had been sold through Facebook and Gumtree via multiple fake accounts since December 2017. Mediation and reparations are reportedly underway for victims of the fraud, while Valentine is expected to be sentenced on 15 July. The news comes just weeks after controversial online ticket resale platform Viagogo was found guilty of misleading consumers by the Australian Federal Court. Following a slew of public outcry and protests from artists in recent years, the Court has found Viagogo in breach of Australian Consumer Law, stating it made false or misleading representations and engaged in conduct liable to mislead the public when reselling entertainment, music and live sport event tickets.
