24.01.2022 It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the.... aw, that's just too cute! He never stood a chance....

24.01.2022 It's a new time for the world... tonight is the first Video Class for Jukuren Dojo! All up to date members are now receiving their training material (with an aim towards activities that can be done solo in limited space) directly by email... and this is open to all current and former students, as well as anyone else interested in becoming a member! Simply send an email to [email protected] or [email protected] for more details!

24.01.2022 I often point out how little muscular strength I'm relying on to effect a throw or similar action.... for anyone who thinks that being physically strong is the biggest aspect of performing techniques, I just have one thing to say.... Enjoy!!!

23.01.2022 So.... which one is you? Go on... be honest....

23.01.2022 A very Happy Birthday to Sensei Wayne Roy from the Jukuren Dojo! All the best with your continued cutting edge approach to modern combatives and self protection!

22.01.2022 Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday, and hope you're all enjoying your break! Classes starting again in a few weeks!

22.01.2022 All classes will be suspended following Tuesday in accordance with the Victorian Government directives... but we'll be back! In the meantime, I will endeavour to post more on this page, to keep both spirits and activity up!

21.01.2022 "How am I supposed to train if I don't have a partner I can grab hold of?" "Well......."

20.01.2022 And yes, I've considered grabbing one of the Menpo from the school armour... ha!

19.01.2022 UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Victorian Government shutdown has started to come into effect, and gyms and indoor sporting venues are among the first to close... which means that, effective immediately, all classes at Jukuren Dojo are suspended until further notice. I will be aiming to put more updates on this page in the meantime, and ensuring that all those in our community are still engaged... and leave you with the reminder that our arts are arts of survival! Classes will return!

19.01.2022 Sorry for the late notice for anyone not on the email list, but due to unforeseen circumstances, class is cancelled tonight. My apologies for any inconvenience.

19.01.2022 I've been speaking recently about the impressions and images people come to martial arts with... and the importance of remembering that your perceptions (especially for those who have been training for some time) are shaped by different experiences and understandings of others... so, if you find yourself discussing something, and it seems the other person simply cannot understand what you mean, it's often not that what you're saying doesn't make sense... it's just that they have a different experience, and cannot apply yours! So be patient... and try to see things from the other point of view... you may find that your own experience is greater for it! Wisdom from Wayne Roy below regarding perceptions.

15.01.2022 All too often, martial arts teach "self defence"... but only use that as a term to describe the teaching of techniques that aren't legal in a tournament situation. Realistically, proper self defence training is part technical, but is more tactical and psychological, as well as understanding of legal realities. The below post from Wayne Roy highlights one method of having physical skills that are in line with both the law, and the realities of self defence, and are applicable to a range of contexts!

12.01.2022 Inspiration for hitting people with sticks....

12.01.2022 Some important points to keep in mind as we explore various grappling and control methods.... both modern and classical!

12.01.2022 Often joint-lock centric martial arts are criticised as "that is too complicated to work in real life", or "the other guy doesn't just let you put the lock on them"... however, most traditional applications (and modern ones) are actually designed to "go with the flow" of the opponent... and, while they can be complex in some forms, they can also be pared down to a simple group of principles... Twist... Lock... Fold... used singly, or in conjunction with one of the other principles. With this in mind, and the insight presented by Wayne Roy, I hope you can start to see that joint locks can be a powerful addition to your defensive arsenal!

11.01.2022 So this has been making the rounds online over the last few days... I find it quite interesting on a number of levels. I've seen people say that it's an accidental action, that it should be illegal (in competition), and so on... but if you watch closely, it's a very deliberate action that begins with extending the gi, then wrapping it over the opponent's wrist before using the uniform to apply the lock. Although an argument can be made that this is outside the spirit of the competition (gi's can be used for chokes, but I'm not sure of other uses), it is a good example of using all of your assets to your advantage... and that's a big part of what we teach! Use everything to your advantage... as it's not always going to be a competition like this!

11.01.2022 Thank you to all who attended our Zoom Catch Up on Tuesday... it was fantastic to see you all again, and I hope to see you in person soon!

10.01.2022 UPDATE REGARDING CLASS RETURNING: As per the Victorian Government Announcement today, it appears that classes will be able to resume as of Monday, 22nd June, making Tuesday, the 23rd our first class back. As noted earlier, to help people ease back into training, and to ensure the safest possible environment, we will initially be holding classes as "weapons only", to aid in maintaining distance for everyone's health, with the aim of transitioning back into the regular Taijutsu from August onwards if all goes well.

10.01.2022 For those that missed it, this week Channel 10 aired an episode of the program "Todd Sampson's Body Hack", focusing on and featuring a number of Japanese martial arts. For a "commercial station" general audience program, this was actually pretty good... and is recommended viewing. It's not without it's flaws, obviously, but shows the various budo in a slightly different light, which was interesting. The program is being replayed on Saturday at 11pm, and can also be streamed from Channel 10's catch-up service, 10Play. https://10play.com.au//e/season-4/episode-7/tpv200921kvngh

10.01.2022 Wise words... and remember to have discussed the plan beforehand... it's no good only one of you knowing it!

10.01.2022 Historically, the arts studied at the Jukuren Dojo (collectively referred to as the "Takamatsuden" arts, or arts that were transmitted from Takamatsu Toshitsugu) have been highly associated with the concepts of "ninja" and "ninjutsu"... even though only a minority claim such a connection. Due to this lowered emphasis on a "ninja" heritage, as well as the somewhat comic imagery associated, we stopped using that term to refer to our arts a while back, today using the term "Budo... Heiho" (the study of warrior strategies is one translation). However, it is important to understand that the central aspect of "ninja" and "ninjutsu" is the concept of "nin"... one that is not unique to such shadowy uses. In fact, the concept of "nin" (or "shinobu") are central to most, if not all, aspects of Japanese warrior arts... as Peter Boylan eloquently explains here! https://budobum.blogspot.com/2020/09/nin.html

09.01.2022 Classes return next Tuesday! In order to continue to maintain a safe distance, we will be beginning with Weapons Only Classes, covering the Kukishin Ryu Bojutsu kata for the next two months or so, allowing us to move safely back into close distance for taijutsu and other skills. This is a perfect time to start your journey in Japanese Martial Arts... or to find your way back!... So... if you've been considering taking advantage of this new beginning to start learning a new skill... and are wanting a safe, welcoming environment to do that in... contact this page for information. (Photo Takakamatsu-sensei showing Yoko Ichimonji no Kamae).

09.01.2022 Just throwing an idea out there.... if the restrictions are lifted, allowing for indoor (small, most likely) groups for training, but at distances, how would people feel about a purely weapons class for a while?

09.01.2022 A sad occasion for today's post. Yesterday, my house was broken into. There was no damage, however a number of martial arts related items were among those that were taken, including a Hanwei Nami Iaito, and around ten bokuto. These bokuto are rather distinctive, with 5 of them being custom sunuke (dark wood), including with resin saya, and a couple made by PAART in Croatia, similar to the attached picture (long and short with wrapping and saya). Also taken was my personal ge...ar bag, including a number of books (Hatsumi's Unarmed Fighting Arts of the Samurai and The Essence of Budo, as well as a handwritten book of Shinden Fudo Ryu Jutaijutsu, and a copy of Iwaki's Asayama Ichiden Ryu Taijutsu), and my personal uniforms, most of which are embroidered with my name in Japanese (), and the school name (Jukuren Dojo Budo Heiho - ). I am not necessarily expecting to see them again... but should anyone be approached about these items, please contact the Box Hill Police department or myself directly via this page. Thank you.

09.01.2022 It has come to my attention that Hatsumi Mariko, wife of Hatsumi Masaaki, has passed away. I would like to take this time to offer my condolences to Hatsumi-sensei, his and Mariko-sensei's family and friends, and all members of the Bujinkan. Unfortunately, I never met Mrs Hatsumi, but all who I have spoken to who have have described her as warm, gentle, and incredibly generous. A sad day for the Bujinkan.

08.01.2022 A big part of self defence is simple awareness... but saying that isn't the same as understanding what awareness actually entails. Awareness is a way of taking in all relevant information that you can, and applying it in a practical and effective manner... so if some information is removed, make sure you can look to other sources!

08.01.2022 UPDATE REGARDING CLASSES RESUMING. With todays announcement of the City of Moreland being a "no travel zone", we are suspending the return to class until further notice. My apologies for any inconvenience, and please continue to monitor the page for further updates.

07.01.2022 We all enjoy a little escapism now and then, and a highly anticipated game, Ghosts of Tsushima, has just been released. Based around historical events at the end of the 13th Century in Japan, the incredible look of this game has many people applauding it's authenticity and realism... but how close is it? This is an interview a friend of mine did regarding the game... highlighting the importance of recognising what is real, and what is entertainment!

06.01.2022 This... may have some truth to it....

06.01.2022 Well, we've come to the end of another year.... and it has gone fast! Congratulations to all who rose to the challenge of being more than you are, exploring your personal boundaries, and strengthening your core selves! The photo is from our End of Year Dinner, including members of the Melbourne Koryu Kenjutsu Keiko-kai Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu & Katori Shinto Ryu and Budo Melbourne - Jukuren Dojo. Looking forward to a fantastic year next year already!

05.01.2022 Wisdom is found in the simplest of things...

04.01.2022 As many know, we were the Melbourne chapter of Wayne Roy's schools... known at the time as Jyukutatsu Dojo. We strive to continue Mr Roy's legacy, today as Jukuren Dojo (using the same first character in our name to pay respect to where we came from), meaning "skill (maturity attained through practice)"... which usually just refers to an ability... however, in our school, we use the term to mean life skills... which come from a mature approach to not only external conflict, but internal as well.

04.01.2022 These are challenging times, especially as we can sometimes struggle to stay motivated in our personal practice... but it's important to remember that all times can be challenging... and challenges come in all forms! Fortunately for us, there will be an end to our current situation... so keep your motivation up... and remember that the job of a martial artist is to meet challenges and overcome them!

04.01.2022 Proper technique, te no uchi, transfer of power, correct hasuji, are all important.... ........ ........ ........ ........... Maybe something needs to be said about quality equipment as well.... See more

02.01.2022 We're back!!!!!!!!! (Almost...) With the lifting of restrictions in Victoria from the 23rd of November, I am thrilled to announce that we will return to class that week! To keep safety at the forefront, we will focus on weapons training... or, as you might think of it, "distance management"!... I am greatly looking forward to seeing everyone again... and, of course, both new and returning students are welcome to join us!

02.01.2022 Classes start again next Tuesday (January 14th) at the Jukuren Dojo! Interested in improving your confidence? Wanting to work on your fitness? Looking for a new challenge?... Curious about just how much you can achieve? Do you have a drive for self improvement? All these and more can be found in training in martial arts! At the Jukuren Dojo, we teach both Classical Japanese unarmed (Jujutsu) and weaponry skills, as well as modern self defence geared to todays environment... so what are you waiting for? Send a message... and be more than you are today!

01.01.2022 Some familiar names here.... Bear in mind that this is the mainline of Shindo Munen Ryu, as opposed to the "reworked" form (only Iai, no kenjutsu) taught alongside Muso Shinden Ryu in a number of lines.
