18.01.2022 From the campaign trail to stop the pulp mill, to the Senate!

18.01.2022 PLEASE SHARE - PLS MAKE TWO SUBMISSIONS NOW An insightful opinion piece from today’s Mercury by Hobart lawyer, Roland Browne. ‘TASMANIA’S Planning Minister Roge...r Jaensch says the proposed major projects legislation does not give the Minister any role in project assessment and lauds the assessment being conducted by a panel of independent experts convened by the Tasmanian Planning Commission (Talking Point, April 30).’ ‘Readers would be forgiven for believing the relevant minister and government have no involvement in such a process once a project is declared to be a major project. If only that was true.’ ‘Ideally, the state would identify the need for and suitable locations for major projects. Instead, we get whatever is served up by developers (often closely connected to government) and, invariably, these projects seek to use and exploit public resources for private gain. And they are often uneconomic and socially unacceptable. The government should not be surprised it encounters significant community opposition to major projects legislation, especially where the government is insisting on a consultation period that aligns perfectly with the COVID-19 lockdown, and where there is no identified and rational need for the legislation'. ‘The legislation must mandate the project is funded without state subsidy and is assessed without any political interference. This could lead to an assessment process we could all be proud of.’ Read on. PLEASE MAKE TWO SUBMISSIONS NOW There are two critically important submissions that are BOTH DUE ON THE 15 MAY 2020. Please lodge both submissions NOW: Make a submission to preserve and strengthen the independent Tasmanian Planning Commission here: https://www.planningmatterstas.org.au//tpc-review-submissi Make a submission against the proposed major projects legislation here: http://www.tasconservation.org.au/major-projects PLEASE SHARE

17.01.2022 "All Tasmanians should join Dr. Brown in his efforts to save the swift parrot and its habitat from the forces of evil that have run logging in Tasmania for far too long. In Tasmania no one is held accountable no one is held responsible and the slaughter of bird and bough continues. Compare this vandalism with public outrage over Rio Tinto and its CEO Jean-Sébastien Jacques, Chief Executive Iron Ore, Chris Salisbury and Corporate Relations Group Executive, Simone Niven. All ha...ve now been sacked for their perceived negligence over the blowing up ancient Aboriginal sacred sites. As a state-owned Government Business Enterprise, the Board of Directors of Unsustainable Timber Tasmania are directly responsible to its two shareholder Ministers whose job is to act on behalf of the people of Tasmania. The shareholder ministers are the Minister for Resources (Barnett) and the Premier and Minister for Climate Change in his role as Treasurer (Gutwein)."

16.01.2022 So short-sighted, and wilful destruction of Tasmania's natural heritage.

15.01.2022 Remember the pulp mill, and the atrocious Section 11 of the PMAA, drafted to facilitate the approval of the mill? Well, this Major Projects Bill is in similar vein, arguably designed to smooth the path of the controversial East Coast Cambria Green proposal. Reports suggest the Bill is to be debated on the 18th August, so please take a few moments to urge Labor MPs to reject this flawed legislation.

15.01.2022 The Liberals and Labor want to silence communities and prioritise developers. Help stop the ‘Major Project’ laws.

15.01.2022 Since I can remember I’ve had repeating dreams of living on top of very tall -giant trees in a magical forest, which is kinda weird because I don’t like heights... ( and yes- long before I saw Avatar!). The first time I visited the ‘Valley of the Giants’ #styxvalley and the #florentinevalley in #Tasmania I knew that such special, dreamy places actually existed. The world’s tallest flowering plants (eucalyptus regnans #mountainash) grow here, many centuries old -some measured up to 327 feet ( yes- nearly 100m!). For years these forests have been logged, and in turn defended by stubborn, brave protestors. Some of these biodiverse, carbon rich areas were protected recently in a World Heritage extension, but the Tasmanian Government is at it again, with plans to slash and burn the coupe shown in this photo. It beggars belief in this time of #climateemergency they would even consider touching such a place as this. You never know what you have got till it’s gone, so a group of dedicated citizen scientists and conservationists has taken a different approach to protecting these wild areas. Groups like @thetreeprojects @forestry.watch.tas and the Wilderness Society #tasmania are offering guided tours of these stunning places, explaining why they are too precious to lose. On Sunday 25th October from 10am-2pm there will be an open day - called the #FlozFest. All are invited! Tour areas that are soon to be logged (unless we can stop this madness !), included in these photos. A very special treat will also be to visit the old Lady Binney’s tourism track, which has a stunning mixed species rainforest canopy and many giant trees. Hard to believe, but the group photo here ( taken 2 weeks ago) is at the base of what is believed to be Tassie’s ‘girthiest’ Stringy Bark tree, soon to meet the chainsaw. If you are in #tasmania put it in your diary and go to https://www.facebook.com/events/1248596028841593 for more detail! Hope to see you on the big day

12.01.2022 Hi Friends - please take the opportunity to have your say on the Interim Report of the review into the EPBC Act. To respond to all the questions will take a goo...d 30 minutes, but the key points to hammer home - as suggested by Greens spokesperson on the environment, Sarah Hanson-Young are: strong national standards; an independent watchdog to ensure protection and enforcement; and climate impacts and carbon emissions to be assessed before large-scale projects are given approval Deadline is 9am Monday 17th August - so do it now! https://haveyoursay.awe.gov.au/epbc-review

03.01.2022 Another attack on our charity status and tax-deductibilty by a political wannabe in today's media. We are undeterred. Our peaceful protests to defend the forests will only grow. Your support gives us great strength and makes the haters really cranky! https://www.bobbrown.org.au/donate
