23.01.2022 Cooper pupdate Our beautiful golden boy has had a busy few days, stitches out on Friday and adopted on the same day! Usually we wait for another two weeks but when your new mama is none other than our very own Dr Sandri from the clinic exceptions are made Dr Sandri fell in love with Cooper when he was just days old and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect home for him.... Congratulations Cooper on your new furever family, we cannot wait to watch the mischief you will get up too with your new family, especially big brother Oswald

22.01.2022 Thanks Boston ..... can any other dog owners relate?
22.01.2022 Boston stage 2 repair update As everyone knows, 3 weeks ago Boston had his soft & hard palate midline cleft defect repaired and we are sooo excited that it has been a success Boston underwent stage 2 of his repair this week (which was an experimental surgery) to attempt to fix his bilateral cleft lip and protruding incisive papilla and also remove some teeth that were growing into his nasal area ... Boston’s cleft lip was different to our previous clefts as his incisive papilla and incisor teeth were protruding in front of where his nose and lips should have been, with several teeth also growing upwards into his nose tissue, that can't have been comfortable for him and of course was not visible to us from the outside Boston’s repair was challenging as Dr Ron was unable to create a tension free closure due to the huge area that needed to come together There was over 3.5 metres of fine suture material alone in this 2nd stage of his repair. And easily over 60 sutures with over 2.5 hours of surgery time Although oral mucous membranes regenerate rapidly, in large mucosal defects wound contraction can result in deformity and loss of functionality and limit mouth and lip movement So we now have to keep all fingers and toes crossed for a good outcome with his healing We attempted to anchor and pull back his incisive papilla mouth to line back up to his natural jaw and teeth His nose and lips had to be split and reconstructed Boston is amazing! Upon waking up from his long surgery he was only interested in when he has allow to eat next!! He is now on strict rest which means no toys and no fluffy bed ect (as fibres and any rough play will damage the delicate repair) He is on a special diet to reduce too much mouth movement which he thinks is very yummy!! Whether or not Boston will require a 3rd surgery will depend on the healing. Huge thanks to Dr Ron and the team at Waroona vet

13.01.2022 Hey guys this post is to answer the question for some of our newbies who may be wondering, What is a Cleft Palate? A cleft palate is an opening between the mouth and the nose that happens when the tissues separating these two cavities do not grow together properly. The defect results are in direct communication between the mouth and nasal cavity. It is one of the most common congenital defects seen in puppies and kittens. It occurs during embryonic development ...and is considered a congenital malformation, which means it is present at birth. Risk factors During pregnancy certain drugs may result in cleft palate development. Nutritional deficiencies and folic acid deficiency during pregnancy may result in cleft palate development. Chemical/toxin exposure may result in cleft palate development. Excessive Vitamin A intake and some viral infections during pregnancy may result in cleft palate development. It has nothing to do with ‘bad breeding’ Sometimes it is just one of those things that happen, just like in human children. As you can tell from all of our puppies, this cleft abnormality does not discriminate as it can affect many different breeds It may seem like there is a lot of clefts lately, but that is just because you’ve not heard about them as a majority are put to sleep at birth or pass away if left undetected However our aim is to save them raise them and adopt them to their forever families To keep doing this we all need to spread awareness that they are out there and deserve a chance! A cleft Palate doesn’t have to mean a death sentence Our aim is and always has been to educate people about cleft palate puppies, in the hopes we may be able to give more of these guys a chance at survival
13.01.2022 Our Miss Dakota had her second surgery and all went well, we also have chosen her forever home and made contact. Thank you to all who applied we unfortunately do not have the time to get in touch with everyone.
12.01.2022 Winston pupdate We are looking for a temporary foster for 8 weeks for our little ball of fluff Winston . Please read in full before contacting us. Winston has quite a few serious medical issues, including a form of dwarfisim and a mega colon so he will need to be fed a strict diet. We are unsure what Winstons future holds he will come back to us in 8 weeks to be reassessed.... Winstons cleft palate is huge and at this stage is likely inoperable. He can drink out of a water bowl but prefers to drink from a water bottle. He is not an outside dog and will need to be inside with restrictions on outdoors. He can NOT be in a home with small children, big dogs and young big puppies as he is fragile. An older small breed would be suitable. Winnie is a happy playful little cuddle bug, if you think you could be his temporary foster family please contact us at [email protected] Please help us by sharing
12.01.2022 Our Miss Saffron had her surgery this week Saffron had both a Bilateral cleft lip and palate, she had a mobile papilla which means her front incisors and teeth are mobile and at risk of breaking off. The incisor teeth and papilla were removed which helped to bring her nose together to prevent food being able to get into her nasal septum. Saffron also had a cleft palate which was repaired at the same time, it was a very intricate and delicate surgery involving hundred...s of tiny stitches. Saffron is recovering well with Nurse Kellie and we are hopeful she won't require a second surgery but will know more when she has her stitches out in approximately 1 week. Huge thanks as always to Dr Ron and the team at Waroona Veterinary clinic for taking such good care of our Saff

06.01.2022 This little addition came into the npcb family last week He has a bilateral cleft lip but he also doesn’t have a nose he breathes though a small cleft defect at the top of his palate. At 3 days old we discovered he also had Pectus excavatum ( rib cage is inverted ) this conditions pups usually die within 3-4 days of birth. Now this guy well he didn’t read the text book and is still happy little guy and loves his milk ... We have no idea what the future holds for him but he has such a will to live that we can’t not help him, Nurse Kellie has been designing chest protection to try to prevent him sleeping on his tummy he also has chest massages 5 times a day to encourage the ribs to grow outwards and reshape. He will stay with nurse kellie though his journey Hopefully he touches people hearts and shows us we should never dwell on the negatives and always strive to be the best person we can no challenge is to big if you believe in yourself ! Oh and he needs a NAME !!!!
