24.01.2022 The journey to meeting your baby can be one of life’s greatest joys, but it can also be scary or bring a sense of panic through different stages of the pregnancy. Here’s a reminder that feeling these emotions is normal. Pregnancy can be hard not only physically, but emotionally too. Our bodies can often feel fatigued, nauseated or otherwise and it’s not uncommon to start questioning if you’re doing it right. Remember, there is no ‘right’ way, just the right way for your ow...n pregnancy, which our midwives and OB’s can assist in determining. Place trust in the process, and in yourself. You’ve got this! If you’re feeling unsure, speak to our team, because we’ll be here for you when you need that extra assistance or guidance.

21.01.2022 A TO Z OF PREGNANCY The letter L.... L is for Labour. There are 3 stages of labour!... Stage 1: The first stage of labor occurs when you feel regular contractions, which cause the cervix to open (dilate) and soften, shorten and thin (effacement). This allows the baby to move into the birth canal. The first stage is the longest of the three stages. It's actually divided into two phases of its own early labour and active labour. Stage 2: Your cervix has fully dilated to 10cm! This stage is the period of time in which you are fully dilated to actually giving birth. It can take a few minutes to a few hours for your baby to be born! Now Push, hear comes your baby! Stage 3: After your baby is born, baby is placed straight-up in your arms. Cherish the moment. But a lot is still happening. During the third stage of labor, you will deliver the placenta and membranes.

18.01.2022 A to Z of Pregnancy Series. Today, C is for Caesarean! A Caesarean section, C-section, or Caesarean birth refers to the surgical delivery of a baby through an incision made in the mother's abdomen and uterus.... What happens during the operation*? Firstly, you will usually receive a regional anaesthetic, such as an epidural, which numbs the lower part of your body. This means you will get to be awake throughout the operation. Sometimes emergency caesareans must be done under general anaesthetic, which means you won’t be conscious during the birth. Your tummy will be cleaned and a tube, known as a catheter, will be inserted into your bladder to collect urine. You will have intravenous (IV) lines inserted into your arm to deliver fluid and medicines. The obstetrician will make a cut through the wall of your tummy, usually low and across near the pubic hair line. If your baby needs to be delivered very quickly, the cut may be made vertically from just below the belly button to above the pubic bone. The doctor will then cut through the layers of fatty tissue and muscle, and finally cut through the uterus. The baby is delivered through the cuts. The doctor will clear the baby’s nose and mouth of fluids and clamp the umbilical cord. If you are awake they will hold your baby up so that you can see. They will then remove the placenta and close the cuts with stitches or staples. If you are awake, you will feel tugging and pulling but not pain, and you will also hear fluid being suctioned. A screen will be put across your chest so you cannot see what is happening. The operation takes about 30 to 40 minutes, with the baby usually born in the first 10 minutes. If you are awake, you will be able to see your baby immediately. Who will be in the room? Your partner or support person will usually be able to be with you during the caesarean. There may also be a lot of medical staff, including: Obstetrician performs the operation and delivers the baby Anaesthetist administers the anaesthetic Scrub nurse passes instruments to the obstetrician Scout nurse assists the scrub nurse Anaesthetic nurse assists the anaesthetist Paediatrician looks after the baby after the birth Midwife receives the baby once born and looks after the baby until you return to the ward Theatre technician looks after the operating theatre and helps you on and off the table Did you have a Caesarean Birth? 18.01.2022 - Ramsay helps to deliver Sydney’s mass COVID-19 vaccination hub A mass COVID-19 vaccination hub has opened at Sydney Olympic Park with Ramsay Health Care workers set to help administer up to 30,000 jabs each week. In its first two weeks of operation, the hub will deliver the Pfizer vaccinations to priority groups including healthcare workers, emergency service workers, quarantine and border workers and their households. ... From 24 May, the hub will complete approximately 5,000 vaccinations a day and will administer both the Pfizer the AstraZeneca vaccines in separate pods. Members of the general public aged 50 and over can register for the AstraZeneca Vaccine from Wednesday 12 May. Individuals aged 40-49 can now register their interest in receiving the Pfizer vaccine though the hub. Ramsay Health Care’s Chief Nurse, Dr Bernadette Eather, said the organisation was pleased to partner with the NSW Government to establish the mass vaccination hub, and congratulated NSW Health on the opening of the hub, which took 20 working days to complete. Our dedicated nurse immunisers, registered nurses and pharmacists will be among the hundreds of clinical staff on site at Sydney Olympic Park to help administer this very important vaccine rollout, Dr Eather said. We are still looking for more staff, especially registered nurses, to be part of the vaccine hub so if you’d like to be involved please get in touch with your manager for more information. I am also pleased to advise that all remaining Ramsay staff and doctors who have not received, or been scheduled to receive, their vaccination can now book into the mass vaccination hub. The sooner we have our staff vaccinated the safer they are and the safer our community is, so I encourage staff to book in for their jab as soon as possible, Dr Eather said. The COVID-19 vaccination hub will operate six days a week from 8am to 8pm.

18.01.2022 A to Z of Pregnancy H is for HEALTHY EATING Although you are growing a human inside you, pregnancy doesn’t mean you need to ‘eat for 2’. In fact, it’s very important that you eat healthy to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need.... Some great healthy snack ideas include: Veggies with (hot) cooked chicken pieces Egg on an English muffin. Homemade trail mix. Baked Beans on Toast. Greek yogurt with fruit. Veggies and guacamole. Fruit smoothie. Toasted Cheese and Tomato Sandwich. Smashed avocado on crackers. Rice cakes with hummus and tomatoes. Food handling is also very important during pregnancy so remember the following: - Wash your hands before preparing food. - Ensure chopping boards and cooking utensils are clean when preparing food - Wash vegetables and fruit before eating. - Avoid cold sliced meats, e.g. ham and salami, cold cooked chicken, pate, uncooked seafood, soft-serve ice-cream, pre-prepared salads and cheeses such as brie, camembert, feta and ricotta. - Avoid sushi - Cook meat well ensuring no pink visible.
