21.01.2022 Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome Do you have pain in the front of your knee brought on by running or sitting for prolonged periods? You may have a condition called Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, also known as runners knee or moviegoers knee. ... Patellofemoral pain refers to pain in the knee as a result of inflammation in the joint between the kneecap and the thigh bone due to the kneecap not tracking in the groove of the thigh bone as it should, causing swelling and pain. Generally, the pain starts gradually and worsens over time due to a change in activity such as training for a marathon or picking up a new sport. Where the pain may initially only come on with high load activities, it can develop to a point where the pain may also be present at rest, getting out of a chair or using stairs. The cause of a maltracking kneecap is varied, and can range from poor biomechanics around the hip and/or pelvis, knee and foot as a result of poor strength of certain muscles and tightness in others. Physiotherapists can complete a detailed assessment to determine the exact cause of your symptoms, and work out a tailored exercise programme, complimented by soft tissue therapy and joint mobilisation of the kneecap if indicated, to assist in your recovery. Taping around the knee cap, or the use of a brace may help initially to allow the joint to settle while the muscle imbalances are addressed. If you have pain in the front of your knee would like a thorough assessment and tailored treatment programme, please dont hesitate to call our clinic and book an assessment with one of our physios.

20.01.2022 Achilles Tendon Injuries The Achilles tendon is the thickest tendon in the human body and serves to attach the long and short calf muscles to the heel bone. The main action of our calf muscles, along with the Achilles tendon, is to plantarflex our foot, such as pointing your toes. There are multiple types of Achilles tendon injuries that patients can present with. These include a sprain, degeneration or a rupture of the tendon. A sprain can occur due to a single event in whic...h the tendon is overloaded, or repetitive overloading over a period of time. A rupture typically occurs as a result of a single event during which the patient may hear a popping sound and then experience weakness of the calf muscle, but may also occur on a background of an already injured, weakened Achilles tendon. Physiotherapists are trained to assess all types of Achilles tendon injuries, and will advise on appropriate management accordingly. Where a rupture is suspected, patients are usually referred for further investigation to confirm the diagnosis. Ruptures are typically managed conservatively with a CAM boot but may require surgery in some instances. Post-surgically, physiotherapist can assist in a carefully guided rehabilitation programme to assist in recovery and return to pre-injury activities and/or sports. Achilles tendon sprains are usually managed with a graduated strengthening programme. Your physiotherapist will advise and guide you through a tailored programme specific to the stage of healing of the tendon. Treatment usually includes soft tissue therapy of the calf muscles and tendon itself, and may include massage and/or dry needling. If you are concerned about Achilles tendon symptoms you may be experiencing, please dont hesitate to call our clinic and book an assessment with one of our physiotherapists, who will guide you through the management of your specific condition.

13.01.2022 Is Sitting the new Smoking? Written by Desiree Barratt, Physiotherapist and Clinical Pilates Practitioner Did you know that sedentary work has increased by 83% since the 1960s and now accounts for 43% of the workforce in America? This rise can be partly attributed to advances in technology and also flexible working arrangements. It has been found that the typical office worker sits for up to 80% of their workday, not including their commute to work. Considering that the defi...nition of sedentary in an ergonomic sense means being stationary for more than 45 minutes, many office workers and even assembly line workers would be classified as sedentary workers. Alarmingly, there is new evidence that shows that prolonged sitting has been linked to an increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular disease and even cancer, even if you do engage in regular activities such as going to the gym or playing a sport. This is a growing problem with the advances in technology, the types of technology we use and an ageing workforce. If you are a sedentary worker, the most important move is your next move. Incorporating movement into your workday can have a significant impact on your overall health and wellbeing, more so than having the perfect posture at your workstation. New advances in Occupational Health also means that sit to stand desks are more affordable than ever, and can be a great way to encourage movement in your working day. Look for other opportunities to incorporate movement into your day such as standing or walking meetings. Your whole team will benefit. An ergonomic review of your workstation can also have an impact on your overall wellbeing, and at North Balwyn Physiotherapy Clinic all of our Physiotherapists are happy to make recommendations in this regard. If you are an office worker and feel that you would benefit from some workplace recommendations to improve your overall health and wellbeing, please feel free to contact us and book an appointment with one of our Physiotherapists.
12.01.2022 Great post by the APA with a case study that supports recent research showing that often hip and knee surgery can be avoided if a targeted exercise program is carried out to restore strength, balance and motor control in the lower limb. If surgery has been recommended for your condition, consider an exercise program first.
