04.01.2022 Remembrance Day 2020 - North Bondi RSL Sub-Branch Originally known as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day commemorates the signing of the peace agreement that ended WW1 at 11am on 11 November 1918. It is a time for all to pause and consider the tragedy of war and conflict and the suffering it causes all of humanity, and to honour the memory of all those who served, are currently serving and those lost to the cause. Lest We Forget.... Although Remembrance Day is different this year, we encourage those who can and would like to observe one minute of silence at 11am wherever you may be in memory of those who served to honour their spirit. Here are five things you can do; 1. Remember To Remember Observe one minute’s silence and personal reflection at 11am on November 11 and pay tribute to all who have served or are currently serving. Visit https://remembertoremember.com.au for guidance on services, to assist setting up reminders and to learn more about the importance of Remembrance Day. 2. Donate to the Poppy Appeal online Plant a virtual poppy in the RSL Poppy Appeal Remembrance Day garden and leave a message of thanks for a Veteran here: https://poppyappeal.com.au/ 3. Tune into live services and virtual commemorative services This includes the official livestream of the service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place that will be available via the RSL NSW Facebook page and NSW Government home page. 4. Attend a BBQ to Remember Get together over a BBQ this Remembrance Day and make it a day to remember. Find out more https://www.rslnsw.org.au/news/a-bbq-to-remember/ RSL NSW are proud partners with Swiss8 in bringing these BBQs to life across the state. 5. Reach out to a Veteran On Remembrance Day, reach out to a Veteran you know or in your community to offer your thanks. Share a message of remembrance by tagging a Veteran on our RSL NSW Facebook page and use the hashtag #remembertoremember. https://remembertoremember.com.au
04.01.2022 Dear valued members My name is Rob de Graaf and I am the President of the North Bondi RSL sub-Branch. Many do not know that the RSL Clubs (For-Profit) and the RSL sub-Branches (Not-For-Profit) are separate entities in NSW (only). Our sub-Branch owns the building from which the Club operates, and the revenue generated by the rent from the Club, and our other tenant, enables the sub-Branch to undertake the vital work it does for our members, and the members of RSL NSW....Continue reading
03.01.2022 Vietnam Veterans Day The Battle of Long Tan. Tuesday the 18th August marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, where 108 brave young Australian and New Zealand soldiers resisted an attack from a Viet Cong (North Vietnamese) force estimated between 1,500 and 2,500. The Battle was one of the heaviest conflicts of the Vietnam War as well as one the few battles in the recorded history of the world to be won against such odds. It would become one of the most extraordinary... chapters in Australia’s military history. The bravery, tenacity and sacrifice of ANZACS at Long Tan has become legendary. That single engagement on just one afternoon in August 1966 has come to symbolise Australia’s ten-year-long involvement in our nation’s longest war. Over time this day has become synonymous with all those who served and died in Vietnam, and in 1987, Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. The arrival of the Australian Army Training in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 marked the start of Australia’s involvement in the war. By the time the war had come to an end, almost 60,000 Australians served during a decade of conflict between 1962 and 1972. Tragically, 521 of them died and 3000 were wounded. North Bondi RSL sub-Branch’s was looking forward to hosting a function for ours and Rose Bay RSL sub-Branch ‘Vietnam Veterans’. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions the function cannot be held. Notwithstanding we take this opportunity to say ‘thank you’ and request that all our members pause and reflect on the bravery, teamwork and endurance that Australians displayed throughout the war. This is a day for us to recognise all who served in Vietnam and honour those veterans who: - lost their lives during battle - returned home wounded, ill or injured - lost their lives in the years since they returned - still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service We also pause to reflect on the impact of service on our veterans’ families. Lest we forget. ------- https://tobrukhouse.com/vietnam-veterans-day-the-battle-of/
