13.01.2022 Everybody has the right to feel safe. If someone else is using violence, making threats, or behaving in a way that makes you feel unsafe or upset, you may be able to get a restraining order against them. There are different types of restraining orders. The one that is right for you will depend on your relationship with the other person and the type of violence you have experienced.... Getting a restraining order may not be the best option for you. You should speak to a lawyer to find out what your options are before applying because sometimes things can be resolved in another way. For more information about restraining orders, see: https://www.legalaid.wa.gov.au//restrai/restraining-orders If you are wanting to get a VRO against a young person, or to protect a young person, see our dedicated sub-site on VROs and young people: https://resources.legalaid.wa.gov.au/project/pcc

10.01.2022 For Indigenous Literacy Day, we spoke with Lindsay Greatorex, our Community Education Officer in the West Kimberley. He offered his thoughts on the importance of effective communication when providing services to Indigenous people. For me Indigenous Literacy Day highlights the significant importance of why front line services have a duty to ensure their clients actually understand the communication between the client and the services. Having recently been involved with the B...lurred Borders Project, I have seen first hand the pitfalls and the hurdles local people face in the Justice system, due to ineffective communication styles and the lack of understanding why two way communication is not achieved. Legal Aid WA is committed to helping people understand and protect their rights and acknowledges the importance of culture, language and community for Indigenous Australians.
