14.01.2022 NORTHBRIDGE ROTARY COMMUNITY FOOD DRIVE 2020 Saturday 26 September shone a bright light over Northbridge. From first light they came bearing gifts of love by car and on foot, trailing children, dogs and each other. The blue uniformed brigade of Northbridge Rotary was there to meet them about 40 in all, bright eyed and Covid safe. From early morning the first shift was beginning to receive and unload a continuous flow of non-perishable food supplies, making sure the donor...s went away with a smile. Northbridge Rotary’s Community Food Drive was in full swing. By mid-morning, the alcoves and stairs of St. Marks Anglican Church Memorial Hall in Malacoota Road were bulging with rows of food boxes and packed shopping bags. The pace ebbed and flowed as people trailed in and out. When the two charity collection vans from Taldumande Youth Services and StreetWork had departed fully laden late that afternoon, there was still a supply of food remaining and Oz Harvest obliged with a collection of the remaining donations the following morning. In all, it is estimated the Northbridge and North Shore community contributed to over a tonne of non-perishable food supplies that filled over 100 boxes and 50 shopping bags enough for 2,400 meals or sufficient to feed a needy family of four for 18 months. Liz de Rome, Taldumande’s Grants, Community and Volunteers Officer summed the impact of this event up perfectly: I wanted to share that as we dropped off bags and boxes of food to our young people, they were so grateful for their generous parcel. This morning, one young girl nearly cried (and me) as she couldn’t believe her luck. She wasn’t sure how she was going to make ends meet this week. The generosity of the community and Northbridge Rotarians has helped fill the pantries of our young people and they’re so grateful. The final comment belongs to the Northbridge Rotary event organiser, Eleanor Chevor: What a day! Peter Russell Publicity Officer

12.01.2022 A Zen Parable A stonecutter was dissatisfied with himself and his position in life. One day, he passed a wealthy merchant’s house. Through the open gates, he saw many fine possessions and important visitors. How powerful that merchant must be! thought the stonecutter. He became very envious and wished he could be like the merchant.... With hard work and persistence, the stonecutter became the merchant, enjoying more luxuries and power than he had ever imagined. But soon a high official passed by, carried in a sedan chair, accompanied by attendants and escorted by soldiers beating gongs. Everyone, no matter how wealthy, had to bow low before the procession. How powerful that official is! he thought. I wish that I could be a high official! Then he became the high official, carried everywhere in his embroidered sedan chair. But it was a hot summer day, so the official felt very uncomfortable in the sticky sedan chair. He looked up at the sun. It shone proudly in the sky, unaffected by his presence. How powerful the sun is! he thought. I wish I could be like the sun! To his surprise, he became the sun, shining fiercely down on everyone, scorching the fields, cursed by the farmers and labourers. But a huge black cloud moved between him and the Earth so that his light could no longer shine on everything below. How powerful that big storm cloud is! he thought. I wish that I could be like that storm! Then he became the storm, flooding the fields and villages, shouted at by everyone. But soon he found himself being pushed away by some great force and realized it was the wind. How powerful that force is! he thought. I wish that I could be as powerful as the wind! Then he became the wind, blowing tiles off the roofs of houses, uprooting trees, feared and hated by all below him. But after a while, he ran up against something that would not move, no matter how forcefully he blew against it. A gigantic, towering rock. How powerful that rock is! he thought. I wish that I could like that rock! Then he became the rock, more powerful than anything else on Earth. But as he stood there, he heard the sound of a hammer pounding a chisel into his hard surface, and felt himself being changed. What could be more powerful than I, the rock? he thought. He looked down and saw a tiny stonecutter far down below him. This Zen parable illustrates the irony of the human desire to want more. If only the stonecutter knew that what he was seeking couldn’t be found outside of himself - that his longing for things to be different, his wish to always have or be seeking more, was the source of his pain and confusion - he may have realised that everything he could ever wish for, was with him all along.

08.01.2022 TRENT ZIMMERMAN PRAISES ROTARY FOR HELPING ERADICATE POLIO IN AFRICA On 29 August this year, the Federal Member for North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman, spoke in parliament about Rotary’s global role in helping eradicate polio. Amidst the gloom of the coronavirus pandemic, he said, there has been some positive and, indeed, exciting news on the global health front. Today, health authorities have declared the entire African continent free of wild polio. It means that polio can be... found now only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and in very small numbers. This is a stunning achievement for the global health community. It is also a credit to those who have worked to fundraise for the international efforts to eliminate polio, particularly Rotary International, which has led the charge by making the elimination of polio their global mission for many years. Every one of the tens of thousands of Australian Rotarians can be proud of their contribution to this outcome. I'd like to congratulate the new presidents leading the clubs in my own electorate, he added, making special mention of the Northbridge Rotary Club whose annual fireworks display, he said, were missed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

05.01.2022 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-53887947 Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.... We've helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. So far, Rotary has contributed more than $1.8 billion toward eradicating the disease worldwide. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Africa is now free of polio. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free.
