25.01.2022 Thinking of having a baby and have questions regarding pre-natal vitamins? Pre-natal vitamins are recommended to promote a healthy pregnancy, provide a good environment for foetal development and reduce the risk of foetal disease. You should always remember that these supplement an already very healthy diet rich in helpful nutrients. Always ask if you are unsure if you should be taking supplements for pregnancy. We recommend Naturopath Nerida Moorhouse who can also help you with this. #osteo #osteopath #pregnancy #prenatalvitamins #vitamins

25.01.2022 Ever taken a ball smack bang on the end of your fingers when trying to catch, forcing your finger(s) backwards? This type of injury can lead to a condition called Mallet Finger where the tendon which helps to straighten the end part of your finger ruptures or breaks away with some of the bone still attached. This leaves your fingertip in a bent position. Most cases of Mallet Finger recover well with splinting and hands on treatment to maintain function of the hand, wrist and upper limb. Who has experienced this before? Let us know below!

25.01.2022 Ever wondered if your teeth are bones? Lets clear this up. They are not bones. They are similar in some ways to bone in that they are hard and have blood vessels and nerves running through them. They are even largely made up of calcium, like bones are. Teeth can even break like bones, but if you break a tooth it stays broken. Bones can heal and remodel naturally over the course of our lives. Another interesting fact is that all bones are completely encased within our skin. ...Teeth are part encased (the root part inside your gum) and part exposed (the peggy part you bite your food with). Look after your teeth They are in limited supply! #osteo #osteopath #teetharenotbones #cleanteeth #twiceaday #bones

25.01.2022 What should I wear to an osteo appointment? We get asked this question A LOT! The simplest answer is loose and comfortable clothing. There is every chance we will ask you to partially undress (never more than to your underwear) because it is so important that we can see your body at a skin level in order for our diagnosis and treatment to be as accurate and effective as possible. We provide gowns for anyone comfortable and we will always ensure body parts that dont need to b...e exposed during treatment are covered with a towel. Your comfort is our number one priority. We hope this helps! #osteo #osteopathy

20.01.2022 Have you heard of a labral tear? A labrum is a piece of soft tissue found in both of the major ball and socket joints in the body - the shoulder and hip. They act as a lining to the socket joints, helping to provide stability to the joint during movement. Labral tears can occur as a result of trauma or long-term wear and tear of the joints. Many tears will give no symptoms at all, however significant tears can be debilitating and require therapy or possible surgical intervention depending on the situation. Shoulder or hip pain? Speak to us and well get you on the road to recovery before you can say femora-acetabular joint Thats a fancy way of saying hip joint #osteo #osteopathy #labraltear

19.01.2022 Get to know your Osteopath Dr Sarah Collins Why did you become an osteopath? I have always had a keen interest in the health industry and wanting to help people, which drew me to studying Biomedical Science with majors in exercise and nutrition. Initially I wanted to go in the direction of medicine but after completing a placement in a hospital, I wasnt sure if it was the right fit. During this time I saw an Osteopath for my own sports-related injuries, and after experien...cing how it all worked and benefitting from treatment I was drawn to it. I was completely fascinated by the idea of treating the whole body and not just the point of discomfort. I loved the idea that I could not only help someone that may be in pain, but at the same time build up good relationships with them and see their ongoing progress. What do you like most about being an osteopath? I really enjoy being able to treat a patient but also educate them about what may be going on in their body, and how we can not only help during the consult but manage it outside the room. I love being able to meet new people, and not only figure out what is going on with them physically but learning about what drives them. There is often so much more to why someone may be in pain, and I enjoy the challenge of figuring that out and using the whole picture to try to address any discomfort. What other activities do you enjoy out of Osteopathy? Outside of work, I love to travel and try to keep as active as possible. You will often find me out and about exploring, often going to various music gigs over the weekends. I also enjoy going out for brunch with friends and baking delicious treats - which I always have to try and palm off before I eat them all myself! I love animals and have a cheeky Labrador-kelpie cross of my own, and am also a volunteer at Guide Dogs Victoria.

19.01.2022 Have you heard of a Sportsmans hernia? This is a painful lower abdominal and groin injury commonly seen in sports people who play sports that involve quick changes in direction and twisting Think football or hockey! This problem involves injury to the wall of the abdomen, as well as a ligament and tendon in the front of the pelvic region. It is associated with pain in the groin during exercise, made worse with twisting or pivoting movements - and can happen in both women and men! This condition is also known as Gilmores Groin and Athletic Pubalgia. If you are experiencing such symptoms, come and see us for an assessment. #osteo #osteopath #sportsmanshernia #gilmoresgroin #athleticpubalgia #hernia

19.01.2022 What is the difference between a bone and a ligament? Bones are the structures in the body that form the skeleton and provide attachment points for muscles, which help us to move when they contract. Bones are relatively hard and very strong. Ligaments are soft tissue structures that attach bones to other bones to form joints. They are dense, strong and fibrous and can withstand the large forces placed upon our bodies when we move, to ensure we dont collapse into a big heap o...f skin and bone! #osteo #osteopath #anatomy #bonesvsligaments #bones #ligaments

13.01.2022 Get to Know your Osteopath Dr. David Arena David graduated with a Master of Health Science in Osteopathy from Victoria University. As he studied he worked with Northern Saints football club and Victorian and Australian beach volleyball players whilst providing strength and conditioning coaching aimed at young elite sports people.... Why did you become an Osteo? I have always had an interest in Health and Fitness and recently increasing interest in nutrition and gut health. I was introduced to osteopathy at a very young age as my auntie and now mentor proceeded to practise her newly learnt techniques on me. In my teen years I was very active taking part in lots of different sports and received osteopathic treatment for injuries I sustained along the way. I was fascinated about how the Osteopath would know so much about the human body and could make such changes to my condition. In my teen years still very adamant on working in the health industry I decided to do work experience with a Chiropractor, Physiotherapist and an Osteopath. After this I decided Osteopathy was the best suited to me as I believe it allows me to help the patients as much as possible. What do you enjoy most about being an Osteo? I enjoy seeing the look of relief on a patients face when we see an immediate improvement of how they are feeling. I enjoy seeing patients excited about being able to do movements that they were not able to do previously. I enjoy learning from the people I see whether it be from their field of work or life experiences. What do you enjoy outside of Osteo? I enjoy training at the gym and spending time with friends and family. Love to travel and love learning about different cultures and new languages. I also like to get out and have a surf if I get a chance.

12.01.2022 Today’s Word of the Month is ‘Biceps’. Biceps means ‘two-heads’. There are two muscles in the human body that carry the name biceps and have two attachment points (rather than one) at one end of the muscle; the Biceps Brachii in the front of the upper arm, and the Biceps Femoris in the back of the thigh. Makes the phrase just going to work the biceps a little more complicated now, doesn’t it?!

10.01.2022 Did you know we can help with your breathing? And THAT is important! A healthy diaphragm helps maximise your oxygen intake, with minimal effort. When it’s not working quite as it should, then your body begins relying on all its secondary breathing muscles (especially those around the neck). This can cause imbalances and muscle tightness, leading to pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back. So, if you’re experiencing tightness in any of these areas, come and see us we’ll g...et your breathing patterns sorted and have you breathing at max capacity again in no time. And exhale. #osteo #osteopathy #osteopath #diaphragm #breathing
