25.01.2022 Toy Run 2020 - September Update The MRA South committee is working hard with all stakeholders to bring Tasmania a Toy Run this year, this work is still ongoing ...has created some challenges for all involved. The question you may be asking, What will Toy Run 2020 look like? What the MRA 41st Toy Run in 2020 will look like will very much depend on Tasmania's COVID19 status in coming months leading up to and on the day of the event and we will be complying to all the recommendations and regulations set forth Tasmania Police, Department of Health, Tasmania and by local, state and federal Government mandates. We have been meeting with Tasmania Police and will be working closely with them and the Salvation Army to come up with an event plan that puts the health and safety of those participating and that of the general public first and foremost. What does this mean? It is very likely that this years Toy Run will look very different from those in past years or those in years to come but with these challenges in mind we are hoping to make it unique and memorable should we be given the green light to proceed. We will keep updating everyone along this journey as discussions progress. Kind Regards, The committee of the South Motorcycle Riders Association of Tasmania, Inc.

20.01.2022 The following is written by Ken Condon a US motorcycle trainer and author of riding technique books. He gives the same message as Australian trainers and expous...es the benefit of committing proper braking technique to muscle memory. You have probably heard of set up and squeeze!! Brake Check: Tips On How To Avoid Crashing How will YOU handle an emergency braking situation? If a car suddenly turns left across your bow, will you be able to stop in time? If you’re a rider with average skills, the answer is most likely no. When faced with an imminent threat, we tend to freeze in our tracks as every byte of brain bandwidth is used to grasp what’s going on. After critical moments pass, we finally realize that we must get this motorcycle stoppednow! Unfortunately, our primitive survival instincts are not very refined, so we tend to stab, grab, and stomp on the brakes. The problem is that abrupt, panic-fueled braking often leads to the sound of smashing plastic and metal. While it’s important to get your brake pads in contact with the rotors as quickly as possible, it’s equally important to introduce this brake force progressively. Otherwise, you risk skidding and falling. The combined weight of bike and rider shifts forward under braking, which presses the front tire into the pavement for maximum grip and stopping power. Without this load transfer, the front tire can easily skid. Squeezing, not grabbing, the front brake allows time for this weight shift to occur and the front tire to bite the pavement hard. Knowing about managing traction while braking is important, but will you be able to apply this knowledge in the heat of battle? Do you think you can apply maximum brake force while staring at a Buick’s bumper? Most riders assume (or hope) they have the chops to pull off an emergency stop. But unless they have the training, they will likely fail. Are you any different? Practicing correct emergency braking technique has three purposes: 1) Experience what extreme braking feels like. 2) Learn to apply the brakes to their maximum potential without losing traction. 3) Engrain this technique in your mind and muscles so you will perform correctly even in desperate conditions. In other words, you must train so your survival instincts don’t kill you. Just because your bike has ABS doesn’t mean you’re excused from practice! Here’s what you do: Find a clean parking lot where you can safely accelerate up to about 20 mph. Apply both brakes (yes, both brakes) firmly without grabbing or stomping. Apply more front brake-lever pressure as you slow; squeeze then squeeze more. You’ll feel your eyeballs press forward in your skull when you get it right. If you skid the front tire, ease lever pressure immediately. If you skid the rear tire, you can release it if you’re more or less upright. Use a bit less rear-brake pressure next time. Rinse and repeat until the act of emergency braking is engrained and second nature. Many sportbike riders discover that it’s easy to skid the rear tire on their short-wheelbase machines, so they choose to avoid the rear brake. But the rear brake provides a useful amount of brake force and also increases chassis stability. The trick to preventing a rear-tire skid is to gradually release pressure as the load pitches forward. On the racetrack, extreme braking force and forward load transfer unloads the rear tire enough to make the rear brake ineffective, which is why most racers and trackday riders don’t use the rear brake. With all this talk about skidding tires, what about ABS? Just because your bike has ABS doesn’t mean you’re excused from practice! Yes, antilock braking systems can help maintain control and virtually eliminate the risk of skidding, but they don’t apply the brakes for you. That’s why you need to practice because a surprising number of riders whose machines have ABS still fail to use their brakes hard enough to avoid a collision. Since the need to use emergency-braking techniques is relatively rare, most riders aren’t very good at it. Regular parking-lot practice will help you master the emergency-braking technique and provide you the opportunity to discover your bike’s full braking potential. You’ll soon become better prepared to unleash the awesome braking power available to you.

06.01.2022 On this day in 1916, two women conclude a remarkable motorcycle ride across the United States. The Van Buren sisters had undertaken the ride, hoping to prove th...at women could ably serve as military dispatch riders. Augusta Gussie Van Buren and Adeline Addie Van Buren were also descendants of the 8th President of the United States, Martin Van Buren. The women began their ride at Sheepshead Bay, New York, on July 4, 1916. More than 5,000 miles and nearly two months later, they and their Indian PowerPlus moto-cycles would arrive in California. Today, we have paved interstates that would make such a ride easier. The Van Buren sisters had no such luxury. There were no road maps west of the Mississippi, the women’s great-nephew Robert Van Buren said of his aunts’ trip. The roads were just cow passes, dirt trails, wagon trails, things like that. Actually, the sisters may have been happy anytime they found so much as a dirt trail. Sometimes, there were no roads at all. Impossible roads, unseasonable weather and difficulties in untold number and magnitude were encountered at every turn, a contemporary newspaper account reported. Washouts, mountain slides, desert wastes and wrecked bridges delayed them, but did not deter them. Incessant rains in Colorado made riding conditions the worst imaginable, and those terrific days were followed by an equally ardent week in crossing the Great American Desert in Western Utah. The sisters accomplished a stunning feat while in Colorado, however. They were the first to ride motorized vehicles to the top of Pike’s Peak. But poor roads and bad weather weren’t the only challenges. Would you believe the women were pulled over by policemore than oncebecause they were wearing men’s clothing? Hmm. How times have changed. The Van Buren sisters made it through all these trials. On September 2, they pulled into San Francisco. By September 8, they’d arrived in Los Angeles. The sisters had hoped to prove that women could serve as dispatch riders, freeing men up for combat if the United States entered World War I. Unfortunately, in those early 1900 years, their motorcycles and their attire got more attention than their accomplishments. Things would change and women would serve as dispatch riders in World War II. In the meantime, Adeline would go on to get her law degree and Augusta would go on to become a pilot. Both women were inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2002. Nevertheless, the ride has proven inspirational to many. One of the great motorcyclists of their age, Paul Daredevil Derkum reportedly called the trip one of the most noteworthy motorcycle trips ever accomplished. The Van Buren sisters had proven that the motorcycle is a universal vehicle. Others credit the Van Burens with introducing women to the sport of motorcycle riding. In 2016, as the centennial anniversary of the ride approached, dozens of women decided to commemorate the cross-country trip. They, too, would start in New York and ride to California. Notably, Sarah Van Buren, the great-great niece of Adeline and Augusta, learned to ride a motorcycle, just so she could participate. The women started in New York, as the Van Buren sisters had done. By the time they reached California, the group had swelled in size to more than 200. Woman can, if she will, Augusta Van Buren once said. Yes. She certainly can. --------------------------- If you enjoy these history posts, please see my note below. :) Gentle reminder: History posts are copyright 2013-2020 by Tara Ross.
