12.01.2022 Today is World Arthritis Day! This year we are taking a closer look at some of the more unknown arthritis conditions, as well as some more common forms...but ...first, here are the simple facts about arthritis in Australia: 3.9 million Australians have arthritis. That’s 1 in 6 people. By 2030, it is projected there will be 5.4 million Australians with arthritis. Children get arthritis, too Arthritis is the leading cause of chronic pain and the second most common cause of disability and early retirement due to ill health in Australia. 52,000 people (aged 15-64 years) unable to work due to arthritis Extra welfare costs and lost tax revenue due to early retirement due to arthritis cost $1.1 billion in 2015 #WorldArthritisDay

10.01.2022 Today is World Pnuemonia Day! The message is, Championing the fight against pneumonia. Pneumonia is the single biggest infectious killer of adults and children claiming the lives of 2.5 million, including 672,000 children, in 2019. This year World Pneumonia Day on 12 November 2020 will be held during a global pandemic that is dramatically increasing pneumonia deaths from COVID-19 and other causes.... COVID-19 could add 1.9 million to the death toll this year. This could increase ‘all-cause’ pneumonia deaths by more than 75%. No other infection causes this burden of death. Disruptions to healthcare services are estimated to cause up to an additional 2.3 million child deaths 35% from pneumonia and newborn sepsis. Many countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America, struggling with heavy burdens of COVID-19 and child pneumonia deaths, will need effective strategies to fight both. Investments in infection prevention (masks, social distancing, hand washing etc), and improved diagnosis and treatment (with pulse oximetry and oxygen) can do double-duty during the pandemic and save lives beyond. This World Pneumonia Day, we are calling on governments and other stakeholders to ensure that the massive effort to control the pandemic contributes to reducing ‘all-cause’ respiratory infections and deaths among both children and adults for the long term. National governments must also ensure that COVID-19 technologies are redeployed and integrated into the health system once the pandemic subsides. 09.01.2022 Today is Global Handwashing Day which is a global effort to raise awareness about the importance of handwashing with soap to prevent illness and disease. This year’s theme, Hand Hygiene for All, calls for all of society to achieve universal hand hygiene. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of a virus is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially through handwashing with soap.... To beat the virus today and ensure better health outcomes beyond the pandemic, handwashing with soap must be a priority. No matter your role, you can celebrate Global Handwashing Day!

09.01.2022 Today is World Prematurity Day, this years message is: Together for Babies Born too Soon Caring for the Future. Every year, 15 million babies are born prematurely more than one in ten of all babies around the world. World Prematurity Day is a key moment to focus global attention on the leading cause of child deaths under age 5: complications from preterm birth, which account for nearly 1 million deaths each year (UNICEF). Without a major push to reduce these deaths, we w...ill not reach the global goal endorsed by 193 countries to end all preventable newborn and child deaths by 2030. World Prematurity Day initiatives aim to increase awareness, reach and engagement around the world about the issues of preterm birth, preterm survival, and optimal development of preterms to reach their potential. 03.01.2022 One important thing you can do to reduce the risk of your little one choking is to avoid giving them circular foods that may easily block their airway if they do have a choking incident. Cut up finger foods length ways, not only are they easier for babies to grip with their palmar grasp, but they are a much better shape to reduce the risk of choking. Cut the longer foods such as carrots, sausages, cucumbers and bananas into sticks, and round foods such as grapes, cherry tomatoes and large blueberries in quarters.
