25.01.2022 Remember little Bronte who missed her puppy preschool graduation due to being injured? Well today she officially graduated when she came in to have some X-rays taken. We’re pleased to report she is going well and was super happy to wear that graduation hat today Well done beautiful girl

24.01.2022 Does your pet have bad breath? Recently Larry visited the clinic as his owner noticed he had stinky breath. Larry is a 13 year old cocker spaniel, and although Larry had a dental scale and polish 18 months ago with a few rotten teeth removed, when he presented to the clinic it was evident that Larry’s dental disease had progressed which was causing his stinky breath. Dental disease is prevalent in 80% of dogs over the age of 3. Untreated dental disease can cause infection... in the mouth which can also spread systemically to the whole body causing damage to the pet’s heart and kidneys. Furthermore it can cause pain and discomfort to the pet giving them a decreased quality of life. The key to dental disease is early management, regular dental checks and home care which can be discussed with your vet. Larry is now home and doing great, and although he is missing a few teeth due to advanced dental disease, he is much healthier and as ‘happy as Larry’! #dentaldisease #badbreath #feelingmuchbetter #vet #vetnurse #illawarra #northernillawarravethospital

17.01.2022 Why do we ask for pre anaesthetic blood testing? Beautiful Evie came in for a desexing procedure. On admission we asked her dad if he would like us to do a pre anaesthetic blood test? The main reason we do this is: to check any underlying conditions we cannot outwardly see. to check the pet’s liver and kidney function as these are the main organs that metabolise the anaesthetic drugs.... it is a great baseline to refer back to as the pet ages. to choose the most appropriate anaesthetic protocol for your pet. Evie was such a brave girl for her procedure and had lots of cuddles from the staff!!

14.01.2022 Handsome Ricky Bobby recently visited us at NIVH after he had a bout of vomiting. It was believed the cheeky pup had eaten something he shouldn’t have which was causing an obstruction somewhere in his intestinal tract. Although X-rays were originally inconclusive, after further investigation with a procedure called an exploratory laparotomy (a surgery to visualise the internal organs via an incision in the abdomen), it was concluded a foreign body was the cause of Ricky Bob...by’s issues. 11.01.2022 Recently we saw Jed in clinic as his owner found a paralysis tick on Jed’s shoulder. Jed was also showing symptoms including wobbly hind limbs and gagging. Other symptoms of paralysis tick can include: weakness wobbly gait... coughing or gagging vomiting changes in bark or meow difficulty breathing Jed was treated in clinic with fluids and tick anti-serum along with some other medications to aid his recovery. We are really pleased to report that Jed is now home and doing great following his ordeal. We have seen a few tick cases in the last few weeks so we urge every pet owner to check their pet is up to date with their tick prevention.
