16.01.2022 Cigarette prices are going to continue to rise, it's never been a better time to think about quitting.

13.01.2022 It really is never too late to quit! A recent study published in Nature investigated the gene mutations in lung cells in both never-smokers and smokers. The never-smokers had the typical gene mutations that occur with general ageing that is seen in other organs. There were about 1000 -1500 of them with only 5% of them being mutations that drive cancer.... In the smokers there were 10,000 - 15,000 mutations (10 times more!!). More than a quarter of the cells had at least 1 driver mutation, some had 2 or 3 (a cell having 5-10 of these driver mutations causes cancer) Interestingly, among ex-smokers they saw two groups of cells. Those with the extra mutations that smokers had but also ones that were close to normal. This suggests that when you quit the lining of the lungs is replenished with normal cells which can be protective from cancer. This research is only very new but also very exciting! No matter how long you've been smoking for, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health.
