11.01.2022 New England Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Ann Joy said in the past month there has been an increase in incidents involving property being ...stolen from vehicles and vehicles being stolen. More than half of these thefts could easily have been avoided if people had paid more attention to the security of their vehicles, by locking the car and securing the keys either on your person or out of plain sight in your home or business." Fourteen (14) vehicles from across the District have been stolen during June as well as wallets and small electronic devices from nine (9) vehicles in the past week. The majority of vehicles have been unsecured and/or with keys left in the ignition. There have been instances of offenders locating car keys during breakins and then using those keys to steal the occupants motor vehicle. "In some of these instances stolen cars are being driven dangerously throughout our community so we all need to take every step possible to make our community safe and that starts with you the owner, " she said. Locations targeted during June include: Armidale: Orr Drive, Lara, Bowman and Naughten Avenue, Campion Parade, Barney, Erskine, Kentucky, Beardy, Markham, Brogan, Kirkwood, Douglas, Baldwyn, Jeffrey, Rusden, Judith, Newton and Tancredi Street, Inverell: Auburn Vale Road, Butler, Miles, Prince, Harland, Granville and Shirley Street Moree: Joyce Avenue, Bendygleet Road, Amaroo Drive, Chester, Edward, Queen, Frome and Boston Street Detective Inspector Joy said it is rare for thieves to force entry to the vehicle if there is nothing of value visible but if your handbag is inside or a laptop is on the seat expect to be targeted. Even if you are only ducking into a shop for what seems a few minutes lock up your vehicle and put valuables out of sight, she said. Thieves don’t generally go out of their way looking for targets, but unlocked vehicles and open windows are an invitation for opportunist thieves. Anyone who has lost a wallet or had one stolen knows the process of cancelling and renewing credit cards, licences and phone plans is a huge inconvenience. Stolen credit cards are likely to have been used before you even know they are gone. If you don’t want your valuables stolen, then don’t leave them in an unlocked car. We would like residents to think of ways they can decrease the ‘rewards’ available to the offender and also increase the ‘risk’ involved with committing the offence, Ma’am Joy said. Police are currently engaged in a number of overt and covert operations targeting property thieves across the District.
